Oh what a weekend! I was able to attend a flickr meet with a great group of people to las vegas. We headed out on friday for a weekend filled with fun. The weekend didn't start out the greatest for me as my gps lied to me and lead me all over the place to find the hat a restaurant that would serve as the meeting place. The funny thing is i have been to this locations quite a few times and i knew the gps had to be lying to me but i drudged on. I ended up finding the restaurant an hour later while everyone was there waiting for me. We headed out and actually made really good time into vegas. Since this was with a group of photographers it was going to be exciting and different then any other time i have visted sin city. we ended up getting into vegas around 12 and in typical fashion i didn't end up sleeping til 3amish just to be woke up at 5:45 to head out to the las vegas sign. The days were filled with fun activities and non stop picture taking. We visted so many places including the strip, the casinos, the neon graveyard and the hoover dam. I was especially excited to see the boneyard since i have never been and it's been like a mini dream of mine. It for sure didn't disappoint. Theres so much i could talk about this trip but who wants to read a page worth of recaps. All in all it was an amazing trip and well worth every penny. I was also quite lucky that jon (joits) allowed me to borrow his 12-24 tokina wide angle. without that lens i would of been stuck using the kit lens all weekend and not been able to get some of the shots i would of. Thanks to jason, soupy, andrew, mike, lauri, patti, and jon for a great weekend. Hopefully i was able to capture vegas and do it some justice.

Jess was able to start 12 inches in from the back edge. He had a 3 section platoon. The Mountain troops were using the 6 dice with 1 red die variation. He choose a sniper and light mortar for added support.

I was able to go for a wander this morning and it was pretty cool and damp. this was on grass, and I was taking some photos, careful not to disturb it. Then another dog started energetically playing with mine, and manically ran straight though the grass tussock I was focussed on. Simultaneously I discovered I'd been standing on a jack-jumper nest and was alerted by a sting to my leg. I could see that the dragonfly looked almost dead, and had been knocked sideways, but I was busy doing some active hunting to see if any more ants were up my jean leg! Anyway...long story but the dragonfly was so cold (maybe just emerged) I just put it on my hand and carried it to a leaf that was higher and had no ant nests under it :-) Other pics of it are here:

"I grow various vegetables, grains and seeds. Thanks to the program I have been able to grow my business and expand my land. With the money I make I can sustain the family. Life is much better."

---

In the Teso region of Uganda, Cordaid and partner organization SOCADIDO support female farmers who struggle to maintain their livelihood because of climate change, land depletion or a lack of tools and agricultural knowledge. Cordaid and SOCADIDO provide seeds, tools, technology and training.

The program started in August 2017 and has been implemented in 9 sub-counties in Teso and supports 9000 farmers in total. The main objectives are threefold: increase food production, reduce post-harvest losses and improve access to finance for the farmers.

Each participating farmer received 2 kilograms of seeds, mainly black-eyed peas, corn and vegetables like cassava and potato, which they plant in a plot of land of about one acre.

All 9000 participating farmers are put into groups of 30. The 300 farming groups are trained on harvest loss reduction, how to organize savings and credit and improve economic activities.

Each sub-county also has a marketing association. That is where the farmers collect their produce reserved for the market after they put aside all they need for their own consumption. The farmers get paid per kilogram of product sold. The association connects the sellers and buyers.

"The problem was that they had a poor bargaining position and often had to sell their products for a bad price", says Tom Edul, Program Coordinator for the Female Farmers Deserve Better program. "As a group, the farmers are much stronger and better equipped to improve their income."

Another vital factor in raising the value of their products is the possibility to save the harvests for a longer time. In some cases, the time of year greatly determines the price of the products. By providing the farmers with special bags, called PICS bags, fruits and vegetables can be saved for months. Now they can wait for the right time to sell and get a much better price.

The successful project is about to end in a few months, but SOCADIDO is eager to extend and expand. Edul: "We really want to continue. The results are great, and we have really made a difference in the lives of these farmers. Our methods of distributing PICS bags, providing tarpaulins for drying the harvest, which increases the quality of the produce, and the implementation of irrigation systems, are unique in this region. The farmers truly appreciate our efforts and they now have the confidence and courage to sell their products on the markets for a reasonable price. They can sustain themselves and even grow their businesses."

So, I was able to convince a family member who was passing through Hong Kong to pick me up a Mark 42 from Secret Base, Hot Toys` flagship retial store, for MSRP of $1980 HKD.

I have to say, having played around with the figure, I`m actually pretty sold on the die cast concept.

The figures have greater than normal articulation compared to their plastic counterparts, thanks to the inclusion of some new joints.

Having seen the Mark 42 and Robocop first hand, it also seems that the quality of the finished product seems to be higher than that of their plastic cousins. Paint apps seem to be of better quality (or maybe better paint).

On the Iron Man figures, the various armour pieces appear to be thinner and fit together nicer, resulting a figure with more accurate proportions to the image on the screen.

The trade off is, of course, that these figures cost more, weigh more, and feature more ``handle with care`` play time.

The portrait of Robert Downey Jr. is light years ahead of that for the Mark VII.

My biggest gripe with this figure is that the quality of the finished battle damaged parts is inferior to that of the standard armour pieces. Gone is the glossy finish, colours on undamaged sections are muted, and the plastic feels to be of an inferior quality.

On the other hand, unlike the Mark 43, at least this figure HAS battle damage parts.

Other accessories include some additional hands (including the now standard articulated finger hands and the bent wrist hands) as well as a light up base that simulates on the of the Hall of Armour storage pods.

On April 23, 2021, we had the amazing good fortune to be able to participate in the first ever group tour of this spectacular garden, the stables and gallery, as part of Virginia Garden Week. We had learned of Oak Spring from Monty Don’s 2020 BBC series "American Gardens". The masks and "social distancing" will date the pictures forever as having been taken during the COVID times. As you can see, it was a little crowded, but I've decided that the mostly tastefully dressed people may actually add something rather than detracting from the beauty of the garden.

"For the first time ever, ticket holders had the opportunity to tour the Upperville estate of late billionaire philanthropists Paul Mellon and his wife Rachel “Bunny” Lambert Mellon. From horticulture and the arts to education and equestrian sports, the Mellons have left a lasting legacy.

Located near Washington D.C. in Fauquier County, Upperville is a quaint, equestrian town with a long history of distinguished guests. Prince Phillip, Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles and Princess Diana have all traveled down Upperville’s bucolic country roads to visit the Mellons, as did John and Jackie Kennedy who grew to be their close friends. Garden enthusiasts jumped at the chance to see this famous property, leaving the tour quickly sold out.

After Bunny’s passing in 2014 at the age of 103 (Paul, a financier, art collector, philanthropist and racehorse breeder passed away in 1999), the couple’s astonishing collection of over 19,000 objects sold for a staggering $200+ million at auction with Sotheby’s in 2014. Garden enthusiasts the world over who’ve been wondering what was to become of the famous gardens and home are excited to learn that the Mellons left the property in good hands with their Oak Spring Garden Foundation. The property has been lovingly refurbished in the likeness of its original condition when the Mellons were in residency. Many of the Foundation’s team involved in the renovation and on-going care are long-time staff members who knew the couple well."

I was able to clone out the guy walking chocks, but there's nothing I can do about the tow tractor.

B-2A AV-3 82-1068 "Spirit of New York"

It is the end of the first week of the year, and normality has returned.

Somewhat.

This retirement thing is still a bit of a novelty, like being able to take advantage of a sale for train tickets, which I have taken advantage of.

More of that in the upcoming weeks.

But normality, on Wednesdays, beings another class for Jools and bridge for me.

Things is with bridge, in the RAF we were all the same standard, and so bid pretty much the same way, reflecting our hands. The only convention we did follow was to open two clubs for a hand with over twenty points.

So, for the first meet of the year, the lesson was weak overcalls.

Which was very interesting, and the reason for it is to force the opposition into a higher contract than they would like.

But with so many conventions and opening bids, unless your partner knows what you do, it may all bring chaos.

But anyway, the hands were sorted so we could all experience making overcalls and seeing how well or how badly we would do.

Ten of us turned up, two didn't, meaning that we took turns in sitting out.

It was all enjoyable, and there was tea and refreshments as well as gossip. The two hours flow, and I bailed half an hour early as I was heading to Folkestone.

Jools had an appointment in Canterbury, so she was going on the bus, leaving me with a good two hours to do something.

Something involved a church.

I saw Ss, Mary and Eanswythe was open between eleven and one, so I would head over, and also try to arrange a visit for my churchcrawling group.

It was a bitterly cold, but gloriously sunny day, I drive back along the Deal Road, past St Maggies through Dover and out up the A20 to Folkestone.

Folkestone was pretty quiet. Lots of parking spaces, and some shops have given up opening some days of the week: Mondays and Tuesdays, and on other days have reduced hours.

So I walked up the Old High Street, where most places were closed, then up to the snicket to the church, past the woold shop, where I thought maybe I should buy Jools some wool.

But didn't.

The church was open, so I go in and was welcomed by a volunteer, Pam, who I struck up conversation with.

It would be a pleasure to have the group, so details were exchanged and hopefully we will go back next month.

I photograph the Victorian glass, some by Kempe were of a very high quality, but the Victorians were thorough in their renovation, and little of the church before the 19th century remains. But I spot some.

The church is bitterly cold, and this is having a detrimental effect on some of the Victorian wall paintings, one on the north wall of the tower had deteriorated badly in the last few weeks, as there appears to be a leak around an old blocked up window, and the water runs down through the mortar.

After an hour, I was done, so say thanks to the volunteers, and walk back to the car.

I was hungry, it was nearly one, and should I wait for Jools or get something?

In the end I called in at Little Farthingloe Farm Shop for a warm sausage roll, and as they looked delicious, a Viennese Whirl, half dipped in chocolate.

The sausage roll I ate standing in the car park, the whirl I ate once back home with a fresh brew, and was crumbly and delicious.

A superb location in a leafy churchyard away from the busy shopping centre, and yet much more of a town church than that of a seaside resort. It was originally a thirteenth-century building, but so much has happened to it that today we are left with the impression of a Victorian interior. Excellent stained glass by Kempe, mosaics by Carpenter and paintings by Hemming show the enthusiasm of Canon Woodward, vicar from 1851 to 1898. His efforts encouraged others to donate money to beautify the building in an almost continuous restoration that lasted right into the twentieth century They were spurred on by the discovery, in 1885, of the bones of St Eanswythe, in a lead casket which had been set into the sanctuary wall. She had founded a convent in the town in the seventh century and died at the age of twenty-six.

FOLKESTONE.

THE parish of Folkestone, which gives name to this hundred, was antiently bounded towards the south by the sea, but now by the town and liberty of Folkestone, which has long since been made a corporation, and exempt from the jurisdiction of the hundred. The district of which liberty is a long narrow slip of land, having the town within it, and extending the whole length of the parish, between the sea shore and that part of the parish still within the jurisdiction of the hundred, and county magistrates, which is by far the greatest part of it.

THE PARISH, which is about three miles across each way, is situated exceedingly pleasant and healthy. The high chalk, or down hills uniclosed, and well covered with pasture, cross the northern part of it, and from a sine romantic scene. Northward of these, this part of the parish is from its high situation, called the uphill of Folkestone; in this part is Tirlingham, the antient mansion of which has been some years since pulled down, and a modern farm-house erected in its stead; near it is Hearn forstal, on which is a good house, late belonging to Mr. Nicholas Rolse, but now of Mr. Richard Marsh; over this forstal the high road leads from Folkestone to Canterbury. The centre of the parish is in the beautiful and fertile vale called Folkestone vale, which has downs, meadows, brooks, marshes, arable land, and every thing in small parcels, which is sound in much larger regions; being interspersed with houses and cottages, and well watered by several fresh streams; besides which, at Ford forstall, about a mile northward from the town, there rises a strong chalybeat spring. This part of the parish, by far the greatest part of it, as far as the high road from Dover, through it, towards Hythe, is within the jurisdiction of the hundred of Folkestone, and the justices of the county. The small part on the opposite, or southern side of that road is within the liberty of the town or corporation of Folkestone, where the quarry or sand hills, on the broken side of one of which, the town is situated, are its southern maritime boundaries. These hills begin close under the chalk or down hills, in the eastern part of this parish, close to the sea at Eastware bay, and extend westward along the sea shore almost as far as Sandgate castle, where they stretch inland towards the north, leaving a small space between them and the shore. So that this parish there crossing one of them, extends below it, a small space in the bottom as far as that castle, these quarry, or sand hills, keeping on their course north-west, from the northern boundary of Romney Marsh, and then the southern boundary of the Weald, both which they overlook, extending pretty nearly in a parallel line with the chalk or down hills.

The prospect over this delightful vale of Folkestone from the hill, on the road from Dover as you descend to the town, is very beautiful indeed for the pastures and various fertility of the vale in the centre, beyond it the church and town of Hythe, Romney Marsh, and the high promontory of Beachy head, boldly stretching into the sea. On the right the chain of losty down hills, covered with verdure, and cattle seeding on them; on the lest the town of Folkestone, on the knole of a hill, close to the sea, with its scattered environs, at this distance a pleasing object, and beyond it the azure sea unbounded to the sight, except by the above-mentioned promontory, altogether from as pleasing a prospect as any in this county.

FOLKESTONE was a place of note in the time of the Romans, and afterwards in that of the Saxons, as will be more particularly noticed hereafter, under the description of the town itself. By what name it was called by the Romans, is uncertain; by the Saxons it was written Folcestane, and in the record of Domesday, Fulchestan. In the year 927 king Athelstane, son of king Edward the elder, and grandson of king Alfred, gave Folkstane, situated, as is mentioned in the grant of it, on the sea shore, where there had been a monastery, or abbey of holy virgins, in which St. Eanswith was buried, which had been destroyed by the Danes, to the church of Canterbury, with the privilege of holding it L. S. A. (fn. 1) But it Seems afterwards to have been taken from it, for king Knute, in 1038, is recorded to have restored to that church, the parish of Folkstane, which had been given to it as above-mentioned; but upon condition, that it should never be alienated by the archbishop, without the licence both of the king and the monks. Whether they joined in the alienation of it, or it was taken from them by force, is uncertain; but the church of Canterbury was not in possession of this place at the time of taking the survey of Domesday, in 1080, being the 14th year of the Conqueror's reign, at which time it was part of the possessions of the bishop of Baieux, the conqueror's half-brother, under the general description of whose lands it is thus entered in it:

In Limowart lest, in Fulcbestan hundred, William de Acris holds Fulchestan. In the time of king Edward the Consessor, it was taxed at forty sulings, and now at thirty-nine. The arable land is one hundred and twenty carucates. In demesne there are two hundred and nine villeins, and four times twenty, and three borderes. Among all they have forty-five carcates. There are five churches, from which the archbishop has fifty-five shillings. There are three servants, and seven mills of nine pounds and twelve shillings. There are one hundred acres of meadow. Wood for the pannage of forty bogs. Earl Godwin held this manor.

Of this manor, Hugo, son of William, holds nine sulings of the land of the villeins, and there he has in demesne four carucates and an half, and thirty-eight villeins, with seventeen borderes, who have sixteen carucates. There are three churches, and one mill and an half, of sixteen shillings and five-pence, and one saltpit of thirty pence. Wood for the pannage of six bogs. It is worth twenty pounds.

Walter de Appeuile holds of this manor three yokes and twelve acres of land, and there he has one carucate in demesne, and three villeins, with one borderer. It is worth thirty shillings.

Alured holds one suling and forty acres of land, and there he has in demesne two carucates, with six borderers, and twelve acres of meadow. It is worth four pounds.

Walter, son of Engelbert, holds half a suling and forty acres, and there he has in demesne one carucate, with seven borderers, and five acres of meadow. It is worth thirty shillings.

Wesman holds one suling, and there he has in demesne one carucate, and two villeins, with seven borderers having one carucate and an half. It is worth four pounds.

Alured Dapiser holds one suling and one yoke and six acres of land, and there he has in demesne one carucate, with eleven borderers. It is worth fifty shillings.

Eudo holds half a suling, and there he has in demesne one carucate, with four borderers, and three acres of meadow. It is worth twenty shillings.

Bernard de St. Owen, four sulings, and there he has in demesne three carucates, and six villeins, with eleven borderes, having two carucates. There are four servants, and two mills of twenty-four shillings, and twenty acres of meadow. Wood for the pannage of two bogs.

Of one denne, and of the land which is given from these suling to ferm, there goes out three pounds. In the whole it is worth nine pounds.

Baldric holds half a suling, and there he has one carucate, and two villeins, with six borderers having one carucate, and one mill of thirty pence. It is worth thirty shillings.

Richard holds fifty-eight acres of land, and there he has one carucate, with five borderers. It is worth ten shillings.

All Fulchestan, in the time of king Edward the Consessor, was worth one hundred and ten pounds, when he received it forty pounds, now what he has in demesne is worth one hundred pounds; what the knights hold abovementioned together, is worth forty-five pounds and ten shillings.

¶It plainly appears that this entry in Domesday does not only relate to the lands within this parish, but to those in the adjoining parishes within the hundred, the whole of which, most probably, were held of the bishop of Baieux, but to which of them each part refers in particular, is at this time impossible to point out. About four years after the taking of the above survey, the bishop was disgraced, and all his possessions consiscated to the crown. After which, Nigell de Muneville, a descendant of William de Arcis, mentioned before in Domesday, appears to have become possessed of the lordship of Folkestone, and as such in 1095, being the 9th year of king William Rusus, removed the priory of Folkestone from the bail of the castle to the place where it afterwards continued. His son William dying in his life-time s. p, Matilda his sole daughter and heir was given in marriage with the whole of her inheritance, by king Henry I. to Ruallanus de Albrincis, or Averenches, whose descendant Sir William de Albrincis, was become possessed of this lordship at the latter end of that reign; and in the 3d year of the next reign of king Stephen, he confirmed the gifts of his ancestors above-mentioned to the priory here. He appears to have been one of those knights, who had each a portion of lands, which they held for the de sence of Dover castle, being bound by the tenure of those lands to provide a certain number of soldiers, who should continually perform watch and ward within it, according to their particular allotment of time; but such portions of these lands as were not actually in their own possession were granted out by them to others, to hold by knight's service, and they were to be ready for the like service at command, upon any necessity whatever, and they were bound likewife, each knight to desend a certain tower in the castle; that desended by Sir William de Albrincis being called from him, Averenches tower, and afterwards Clinton tower, from the future owners of those lands. (fn. 2) Among those lands held by Sir William de Albrincis for this purpose was Folkestone, and he held them of the king in capitle by barony. These lands together made up the barony of Averenches, or Folkestone, as it was afterwards called, from this place being made the chief of the barony, caput baroniæ, as it was stiled in Latin; thus The Manor of Folkestone, frequently called in after times An Honor, (fn. 3) and the mansion of it the castle, from its becoming the chief seat or residence of the lords paramount of this barony, continued to be so held by his descendants, whose names were in Latin records frequently speit Albrincis, but in French Avereng and Averenches, and in after times in English ones, Evering; in them it continued till Matilda, daughter and heir of William de Albrincis, carried it in marriage to Hamo de Crevequer, who, in the 20th year of that reign, had possession given him of her inheritance. He died in the 47th year of that reign, possessed of the manor of Folkestone, held in capite, and by rent for the liberty of the hundred, and ward of Dover castle. Robert his grandson, dying s. p. his four sisters became his heirs, and upon the division of their inheritance, and partition of this barony, John de Sandwich, in right of his wife Agnes, the eldest sister, became entitled to this manor and lordship of Folkestone, being the chief seat of the barony, a preference given to her by law, by reason of her eldership; and from this he has been by some called Baron of Folkestone, as has his son Sir John de Sandwich, who left an only daughter and heir Julian, who carried this manor in marriage to Sir John de Segrave, who bore for his arms, Sable, three garbs, argent. He died in the 17th year of Edward III. who, as well as his son, of the same name, received summons to parliament, though whether as barons of Folkestone, as they are both by some called, I know not. Sir John de Segrave, the son, died possessed of this manor anno 23 Edward III. soon after which it appears to have passed into the family of Clinton, for William de Clinton, earl of Huntingdon, who bore for his arms, Argent, crusulee, situchee, sable, upon a chief, azure, two mullets, or, pierced gules; which coat differed from that of his elder brother's only in the croslets, which were not borne by any other of this family till long afterwards, (fn. 4) died possessed of it in the 28th year of that reign, at which time the mansion of this manor bore the name of the castle. He died s. p. leaving his nephew Sir John de Clinton, son of John de Clinton, of Maxtoke, in Warwickshire, his heir, who was afterwards summoned to parliament anno 42 Edward III. and was a man of great bravery and wisdom, and much employed in state affairs. He died possessed of this manor, with the view of frank-pledge, a moiety of the hundred of Folkestone, and THE MANOR OF WALTON, which, though now first mentioned, appears to have had the same owners as the manor of Folkestone, from the earliest account of it. He married Idonea, eldest daughter of Jeffry, lord Say, and at length the eldest coheir of that family, and was succeeded in these manors by his grandson William, lord Clinton, who, anno 6 Henry IV. had possession granted of his share of the lands of William de Say, as coheir to him in right of his grandmother Idonea, upon which he bore the title of lord Clinton and Saye, which latter however he afterwards relinquished, though he still bore for his arms, Qnarterly, Clinton and Saye, with two greybounds for his supporters. After which the manor of Folkestone, otherwise called Folkestone Clinton, and Walton, continued to be held in capite by knight's service, by his descendants lords Clinton, till Edward, lord Clinton and Saye, which title he then bore, together with Elizabeth his wife, in the 30th year of Henry VIII. conveyed these manors, with other premises in this parish, to Thomas Cromwell lord Cromwell, afterwards created earl of Essex, on whose attainder two years afterwards they reverted again to the crown, at which time the lordship of Folkestone was stiled an honor; whence they were granted in the fourth year of Edward VI. to the former possessor of them, Edward, lord Clinton and Saye, to hold in capite, for the meritorious services he had performed. In which year, then bearing the title of lord Clinton and Saye, he was declared lord high admiral, and of the privy council, besides other favours conferred on him; and among other lands, he had a grant of these manors, as abovementioned, which he next year, anno 5 Edward VI. reconveyed back to the crown, in exchange for other premises. (fn. 5) He was afterwards installed knight of the garter, by the title of Earl of Lincoln and Baron of Clinton and Saye; and in the last year of that reign, constable of the tower of London. Though in the 1st year of queen Mary he lost all his great offices for a small time, yet he had in recompence of his integrity and former services, a grant from her that year, of several manors and estates in this parish, as well as elsewhere, and among others, of these manors of Folkestone and Walton, together with the castle and park of Folkestone, to hold in capite; all which he, the next year, passed away by sale to Mr. Henry Herdson, citizen and alderman of London, who lest several sons, of whom Thomas succeeded him in this estate, in whose time the antient park of Folkestone seems to have been disparked. His son Mr. Francis Herdson alienated his interst in these manors and premises to his uncle Mr. John Herdson, who resided at the manor of Tyrlingham, in this parish, and dying in 1622, was buried in the chancel of Hawking church, where his monument remains; and there is another sumptuous one besides erected for him in the south isle of Folkestone church. They bore for their arms, Argent, a cross sable, between four fleurs de lis, gules. He died s. p. and by will devised these manors, with his other estates in this parish and neighbourhood, to his nephew Basill, second son of his sister Abigail, by Charles Dixwell, esq. Basill Dixwell, esq. afterwards resided at Tyrlingham, a part of the estate devised to him by his uncle, where, in the 3d year of king Charles I. he kept his shrievalty, with great honor and hospitality; after which he was knighted, and in 1627, anno 3 Charles I. created a baronet; but having rebuilt the mansion of Brome, in Barham, he removed thither before his death. On his decease unmarried, the title of baronet became extinct; but he devised these manors, with the rest of his estates, to his nephew Mark Dixwell, son of his elder brother William Dixwell, of Coton, in Warwickshire, who afterwards resided at Brome. He married Elizabeth, sister and heir of William Read, esq. of Folkestone, by whom he had Basill Dixwell, esq. of Brome, who in 1660, anno 12 Charles II. was created a baronet. His son Sir Basill Dixwell, bart. of Brome, about the year 1697, alientated these manors, with the park-house and grounds, and other estates in this parish and neighbourhood, to Jacob Desbouverie, esq. of LondonHe was descended from Laurence de Bouverie, de la Bouverie, or Des Bouveries, of an antient and honorable extraction in Flanders, (fn. 6) who renouncing the tenets of the Romish religion came into England in the year 1567, anno 10 Elizabeth, and seems to have settled first at Canterbury. He was a younger son of Le Sieur des Bouveries, of the chateau de Bouverie, near Lisle, in Flanders, where the eldest branch of this family did not long since possess a considerable estate, bearing for their arms, Gules, a bend, vaire. Edward, his eldest son, was an eminet Turkey merchant, was knighted by king James II. and died at his seat at Cheshunt, in Hertfordshire, in 1694. He had seven sons and four daughters; of the former, William, the eldest, was likewife an eminent Turkey merchant, and was, anno 12 queen Anne, created a baronet, and died in 1717. Jacob, the third son, was purchaser of these manors; and Christopher, the seventh son, was knighted, and seated at Chart Sutton, in this county, under which a further account of him may be seen; (fn. 7) and Anne, the second daughter, married Sir Philip Boteler, bart. Jacob Desbouverie afterwards resided at Tyrlingham, and dying unmarried in 1722, by his will devised these manors, with his other estates here, to his nephew Sir Edward Desbouverie, bart. the eldest brother son of Sir William Desbouverie, bart. his elder brother, who died possessed of them in 1736, s. p. on which his title, with these and all his other estates, came to his next surviving brother and heir Sir Jacob Desbouverie, bart. who anno 10 George II. procured an act to enable himself and his descendants to use the name of Bouverie only, and was by patent, on June 29, 1747, created baron of Longford, in Wiltshire, and viscount Folkestone, of Folkestone. He was twice married; first to Mary, daughter and sole heir of Bartholomew Clarke, esq. of Hardingstone, in Northamptonshire, by whom he had several sons and daughters, of whom William, the eldest son, succeeded him in titles and estates; Edward is now of Delapre abbey, near Northamptonshire; Anne married George, a younger son of the lord chancellor Talbot; Charlotte; Mary married Anthony, earl of Shastesbury; and Harriot married Sir James Tilney Long, bart. of Wiltshire. By Elizabeth his second wife, daughter of Robert, lord Romney, he had Philip, who has taken the name of Pusey, and possesses, as heir to his mother Elizabeth, dowager viscountess Folkestone, who died in 1782, several manors and estates in the western part of this county. He died in 1761, and was buried in the family vault at Britford, near Salisbury, being succeeded in title and estates by his eldest son by his first wife, William, viscount Folkestone, who was on Sept. 28, anno 5 king George III. created Earl of Radnor, and Baron Pleydell Bouverie, of Coleshill, in Berkshire. He died in 1776, having been three times married; first, to Harriot, only daughter and heir of Sir Mark Stuart Pleydell, bart. of Colefhill, in Berkshire. By her, who died in 1750, and was buried at Britford, though there is an elegant monument erected for her at Coleshill, he had Hacob, his successor in titles and estates, born in 1750. He married secondly, Rebecca, daughter of John Alleyne, esq. of Barbadoes, by whom he had four sons; William-Henry, who married Bridget, daughter of James, earl of Morton; Bartholomew, who married MaryWyndham, daughter of James Everard Arundell, third son of Henry, lord Arundell, of Wardour; and Edward, who married first Catherine Murray, eldest daughter of John, earl of Dunmore; and secondly, Arabella, daughter of admiral Sir Chaloner Ogle. His third wife was Anne, relict of Anthony Duncombe, lord Faversham, and daughter of Sir Thomas Hales, bart. of Bekesborne, by whom he had two daughters, who both died young. He was succeeded in titles and estates by his eldest son, the right hon. Jacob Pleydell Bouverie, earl of Radnor, who is the present possessor of these manors of Folkestone and Walton, with the park-house and disparked grounds adjacent to it, formerly the antient park of Folkestone, the warren, and other manors and estates in this parish and neighbourhood.

FOLKESTONE is within the ECCLESIASTICAL JURISDICTION of the diocese of Canterbury, and deanry of Dover.

The church, which is dedicated to St. Mary and St. Eanswith, consists of three isles and three chancels, having a square tower, with a beacon turret in the middle of it, in which there is a clock, and a peal of eight bells, put up in it in 1779. This church is built of sand-stone; the high chancel, which has been lately ceiled, seems by far the most antient part of it. Under an arch in the north wall is a tomb, with the effigies of a man, having a dog at his feet, very an tient, probably for one of the family of Fienes, constables of Dover castle and wardens of the five ports; and among many other monuments and inscriptions, within the altar-rails, are monuments for the Reades, of Folkestone, arms, Azure, a griffin, or, quartering gules, a pheon between three leopards faces, or; for William Langhorne, A.M. minister, obt. 1772. In the south chancel is a most elegant monument, having the effigies of two men kneeling at two desks, and an inscription for J. Herdson, esq. who lies buried in Hawkinge church, obt. 1622. In the south isle a tomb for J. Pragels, esq. obt. 1676, arms, A castle triple towered, between two portcullises; on a chief, a sinister hand gauntled, between two stirrups. In the middle isle a brass plate for Joane, wife of Thomas Harvey, mother of seven sons (one of which was the physician) and two daughters. In the north wall of the south isle were deposited the remains of St. Eanswith, in a stone coffin; and under that isle is a large charnelhouse, in which are deposited the great quantity of bones already taken notice of before. Philipott, p. 96, says, the Bakers, of Caldham, had a peculiar chancel belonging to them in this church, near the vestrydoor, over the charnel-house, which seems to have been that building mentioned by John Baker, of Folkestone, who by his will in 1464, ordered, that his executors should make a new work, called an isle, with a window in it, with the parishioners advice; which work should be built between the vestry there and the great window. John Tong, of Folkestone, who was buried in this church, by will in 1534, ordered that certain men of the parish should be enfeoffed in six acres of land, called Mervyle, to the use of the mass of Jhesu, in this church.

On Dec. 19, 1705, the west end of this church, for the length of two arches out of the five, was blown down by the violence of the wind; upon which the curate and parishioners petitioned archbishop Tillot son, for leave to shorten the church, by rebuilding only one of the fallen arches, which was granted. But by this, the church, which was before insufficient to contain the parishioners, is rendered much more inconvenient to them for that purpose. By the act passed anno 6 George III. for the preservation of the town and church from the ravages of the sea as already noticed before. After such works are finished, &c. the rates are to be applied towards their repair, and to the keeping in repair, and the support and preservation of this church.

¶This church was first built by Nigell de Muneville, lord of Folkestone at the latter end of king Henry I. or the beginning of king Stephen's reign, when he removed the priory from the precinct of the castle to it in 1137, and he gave this new church and the patronage of it to the monks of Lolley, in Normandy, for their establishing a cell, or alien priory here, as has been already mentioned, to which this new church afterwards served as the conventual church of it. The profits of it were very early appropriated to the use of this priory, that is, before the 8th of king Richard II. anno 1384, the duty of it being served by a vicar, whose portion was settled in 1448, at the yearly pension of 10l. 0s. 2½d. to be paid by the prior, in lieu of all other profits whatsoever. In which state this appropriation and vicarage remained till the surrendry of the priory, in the 27th year of king Henry VIII. when they came, with the rest of the possessions of it, into the king's hands, who in his 31st year demised the vicarage and parish church of Folkestone, with all its rights, profits, and emoluments, for a term of years, to Thomas, lord Cromwell, who assigned his interest in it to Anthony Allcher, esq. but the fee of both remained in the crown till the 4th year of king Edward VI. when they were granted, with the manor, priory, and other premises here, to Edward, lord Clinton and Saye, to hold in capite; who the next year conveyed them back again to the crown, in exchange for other premises, (fn. 23) where the patronage of the vicarage did not remain long; for in 1558, anno 6 queen Mary, the queen granted it, among several others, to the archbishop. But the church or parsonage appropriate of Folkestone remained longer in the crown, and till queen Elizabeth, in her 3d year, granted it in exchange, among other premises, to archbishop Parker, being then in lease to lord Clinton, at the rent of 57l. 2s. 11d. at which rate it was valued to the archbishop, in which manner it has continued to be leased out ever since, and it now, with the patronage of the vicarage, remains parcel of the possessions of the see of Canterbury; the family of Breams were formerly lessees of it, from whom the interest of the lease came to the Taylors, of Bifrons, and was sold by the late Rev. Edward Taylor, of Bisrons, to the right hon. Jacob, earl of Radnor, the present lessee of it.

Rhinoceros /raɪˈnɒsərəs/, often abbreviated as rhino, is a group of five extant species of knee-less, odd-toed ungulates in the family Rhinocerotidae. Two of these species are native to Africa and three to southern Asia.

Members of the rhinoceros family are characterized by their large size (they are some of the largest remaining megafauna, with all of the species able to reach one tonne or more in weight); as well as by a herbivorous diet; a thick protective skin, 1.5–5 cm thick, formed from layers of collagen positioned in a lattice structure; relatively small brains for mammals this size (400–600 g); and a large horn. They generally eat leafy material, although their ability to ferment food in their hindgut allows them to subsist on more fibrous plant matter, if necessary. Unlike other perissodactyls, the two African species of rhinoceros lack teeth at the front of their mouths, relying instead on their powerful premolar and molar teeth to grind up plant food.[1]

Rhinoceros are killed by humans for their horns, which are bought and sold on the black market, and which are used by some cultures for ornamental or (pseudo-scientific) medicinal purposes. The horns are made of keratin, the same type of protein that makes up hair and fingernails.[2] Both African species and the Sumatran rhinoceros have two horns, while the Indian and Javan rhinoceros have a single horn.

The IUCN Red List identifies three of the species as critically endangered.

The word rhinoceros is derived through Latin from the Ancient Greek: ῥῑνόκερως, which is composed of ῥῑνο- (rhino-, "nose") and κέρας (keras, "horn"). The plural in English is rhinoceros or rhinoceroses. The collective noun for a group of rhinoceroses is crash or herd.

The five living species fall into three categories. The two African species, the white rhinoceros and the black rhinoceros, belong to the Dicerotini group, which originated in the middle Miocene, about 14.2 million years ago. The species diverged during the early Pliocene (about 5 million years ago). The main difference between black and white rhinos is the shape of their mouths - white rhinos have broad flat lips for grazing, whereas black rhinos have long pointed lips for eating foliage.

There are two living Rhinocerotini species, the Indian rhinoceros and the Javan rhinoceros, which diverged from one another about 10 million years ago. The Sumatran rhinoceros is the only surviving representative of the most primitive group, the Dicerorhinini, which emerged in the Miocene (about 20 million years ago).[3] The extinct woolly rhinoceros of northern Europe and Asia was also a member of this tribe.

A subspecific hybrid white rhino (Ceratotherium s. simum × C. s. cottoni) was bred at the Dvůr Králové Zoo (Zoological Garden Dvur Kralove nad Labem) in the Czech Republic in 1977. Interspecific hybridisation of black and white rhinoceros has also been confirmed.[4]

While the black rhinoceros has 84 chromosomes (diploid number, 2N, per cell), all other rhinoceros species have 82 chromosomes.

White rhinoceros

Main article: White rhinoceros

There are two subspecies of white rhino: the southern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum simum) and the northern white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum cottoni). In 2007, the southern subspecies had a wild population of 17,480 (IUCN2008) - 16,266 of which were in South Africa - making them the most abundant rhino subspecies in the world. However, the northern subspecies was critically endangered, with as few as four individuals in the wild; the possibility of complete extinction in the wild having been noted since June 2008.[5] Six are known to be held in captivity, two of which reside in a zoo in San Diego. Four born in a zoo in the Czech Republic were transferred to a wildlife refuge in Kenya in December 2009, in an effort to have the animals reproduce and save the subspecies.[6]

There is no conclusive explanation of the name white rhinoceros. A popular theory that "white" is a distortion of either the Afrikaans word weid or the Dutch word wijd (or its other possible spellings whyde, weit, etc.,) meaning wide and referring to the rhino's square lips is not supported by linguistic studies.[7][8]

The white rhino has an immense body and large head, a short neck and broad chest. This rhino can exceed 3,500 kg (7,700 lb), have a head-and-body length of 3.5–4.6 m (11–15 ft) and a shoulder height of 1.8–2 m (5.9–6.6 ft). The record-sized white rhinoceros was about 4,500 kg (10,000 lb).[9] On its snout it has two horns. The front horn is larger than the other horn and averages 90 cm (35 in) in length and can reach 150 cm (59 in). The white rhinoceros also has a prominent muscular hump that supports its relatively large head. The colour of this animal can range from yellowish brown to slate grey. Most of its body hair is found on the ear fringes and tail bristles, with the rest distributed rather sparsely over the rest of the body. White rhinos have the distinctive flat broad mouth that is used for grazing.

Black rhinoceros

Main article: Black rhinoceros

The name black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) was chosen to distinguish this species from the white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum). This can be confusing, as the two species are not really distinguishable by color. There are four subspecies of black rhino: South-central (Diceros bicornis minor), the most numerous, which once ranged from central Tanzania south through Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique to northern and eastern South Africa; South-western (Diceros bicornis bicornis) which are better adapted to the arid and semi-arid savannas of Namibia, southern Angola, western Botswana and western South Africa; East African (Diceros bicornis michaeli), primarily in Tanzania; and West African (Diceros bicornis longipes) which was declared extinct in November 2011.[10] The native Tswanan name Keitloa is used to describe a South African variation of the black rhino in which the posterior horn is equal to or longer than the anterior horn.[11]

An adult black rhinoceros stands 150–175 cm (59–69 in) high at the shoulder and is 3.5–3.9 m (11–13 ft) in length.[12] An adult weighs from 850 to 1,600 kg (1,900 to 3,500 lb), exceptionally to 1,800 kg (4,000 lb), with the females being smaller than the males. Two horns on the skull are made of keratin with the larger front horn typically 50 cm long, exceptionally up to 140 cm. Sometimes, a third smaller horn may develop. The black rhino is much smaller than the white rhino, and has a pointed mouth, which it uses to grasp leaves and twigs when feeding.

During the latter half of the 20th century their numbers were severely reduced from an estimated 70,000[13] in the late 1960s to only 2,410 in 1995.[14]

Indian rhinoceros

Main article: Indian rhinoceros

The Indian rhinoceros, or the greater one-horned rhinoceros, (Rhinoceros unicornis) is now found almost exclusively in Nepal and North-Eastern India. The rhino once inhabited many areas ranging from Pakistan to Burma and may have even roamed in China. However, because of human influence, their range has shrunk and now they only exist in several protected areas of India (in Assam, West Bengal, Gujarat and a few pairs in Uttar Pradesh) and Nepal, plus a few pairs in Lal Suhanra National Park in Pakistan. It is confined to the tall grasslands and forests in the foothills of the Himalayas.

The Indian rhinoceros has thick, silver-brown skin which creates huge folds all over its body. Its upper legs and shoulders are covered in wart-like bumps, and it has very little body hair. Fully grown males are larger than females in the wild, weighing from 2,500–3,200 kg (5,500–7,100 lb).The Indian rhino stands at 1.75–2.0 metres (5.75–6.5 ft). Female Indian rhinos weigh about 1,900 kg and are 3–4 metres long. The record-sized specimen of this rhino was approximately 3,800 kg. The Indian rhino has a single horn that reaches a length of between 20 and 100 cm. Its size is comparable to that of the white rhino in Africa.

Two-thirds of the world's Indian rhinoceroses are now confined to the Kaziranga National Park situated in the Golaghat district of Assam, India.[15]

Javan rhinoceros

Main article: Javan rhinoceros

The Javan rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus) is one of the rarest and most endangered large mammals anywhere in the world.[16] According to 2002 estimates, only about 60 remain, in Java (Indonesia) and Vietnam. Of all the rhino species, the least is known of the Javan Rhino. These animals prefer dense lowland rain forest, tall grass and reed beds that are plentiful with large floodplains and mud wallows. Though once widespread throughout Asia, by the 1930s the rhinoceros was nearly hunted to extinction in India, Burma, Peninsular Malaysia, and Sumatra for the supposed medical powers of its horn and blood. As of 2009, there are only 40 of them remaining in Ujung Kulon Conservation, Java, Indonesia. The last rhinoceros in Vietnam was reportedly killed in 2010.[17]

Like the closely related, and larger, Indian rhinoceros, the Javan rhinoceros has a single horn. Its hairless, hazy gray skin falls into folds into the shoulder, back, and rump giving it an armored-like appearance. The Javan rhino's body length reaches up to 3.1–3.2 m (10–10 ft), including its head and a height of 1.5–1.7 m (4 ft 10 in–5 ft 7 in) tall. Adults are variously reported to weigh between 900–1,400 kg[18] or 1,360–2,000 kg.[19] Male horns can reach 26 cm in length, while in females they are knobs or are not present at all.[19]

Sumatran rhinoceros

Main article: Sumatran rhinoceros

The Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) is the smallest extant rhinoceros species, as well as the one with the most hair. It can be found at very high altitudes in Borneo and Sumatra. Due to habitat loss and poaching, its numbers have declined and it is the most threatened rhinoceros. About 275 Sumatran rhinos are believed to remain.

A mature Sumatran rhino typically stands about 130 cm (51 in) high at the shoulder, with a body length of 240–315 cm (94–124 in) and weighing around 700 kg (1,500 lb), though the largest individuals have been known to weigh as much as 1,000 kilograms. Like the African species, it has two horns; the larger is the front (25–79 cm), with the smaller usually less than 10 cm long. The males have much larger horns than the females. Hair can range from dense (the densest hair in young calves) to scarce. The color of these rhinos is reddish brown. The body is short and has stubby legs. They also have a prehensile lip.

Rhinocerotoids diverged from other perissodactyls by the early Eocene. Fossils of Hyrachyus eximus found in North America date to this period. This small hornless ancestor resembled a tapir or small horse more than a rhino. Three families, sometimes grouped together as the superfamily Rhinocerotoidea, evolved in the late Eocene: Hyracodontidae, Amynodontidae and Rhinocerotidae.

Hyracodontidae, also known as 'running rhinos', showed adaptations for speed, and would have looked more like horses than modern rhinos. The smallest hyracodontids were dog-sized; the largest was Indricotherium, believed to be one of the largest land mammals that ever existed. The hornless Indricotherium was almost seven metres high, ten metres long, and weighed as much as 15 tons. Like a giraffe, it ate leaves from trees. The hyracodontids spread across Eurasia from the mid-Eocene to early Miocene.

The Amynodontidae, also known as "aquatic rhinos", dispersed across North America and Eurasia, from the late Eocene to early Oligocene. The amynodontids were hippopotamus-like in their ecology and appearance, inhabiting rivers and lakes, and sharing many of the same adaptations to aquatic life as hippos.

The family of all modern rhinoceros, the Rhinocerotidae, first appeared in the Late Eocene in Eurasia. The earliest members of Rhinocerotidae were small and numerous; at least 26 genera lived in Eurasia and North America until a wave of extinctions in the middle Oligocene wiped out most of the smaller species. However, several independent lineages survived. Menoceras, a pig-sized rhinoceros, had two horns side-by-side. The North American Teleoceras had short legs, a barrel chest and lived until about 5 million years ago. The last rhinos in the Americas became extinct during the Pliocene.

Modern rhinos are believed to have began dispersal from Asia during the Miocene. Two species survived the most recent period of glaciation and inhabited Europe as recently as 10,000 years ago: the woolly rhinoceros and Elasmotherium. The woolly rhinoceros appeared in China around 1 million years ago and first arrived in Europe around 600,000 years ago. It reappeared 200,000 years ago, alongside the woolly mammoth, and became numerous. Eventually it was hunted to extinction by early humans. Elasmotherium, also known as the giant rhinoceros, survived through the middle Pleistocene: it was two meters tall, five meters long and weighed around five tons, with a single enormous horn, hypsodont teeth and long legs for running.

Of the extant rhinoceros species, the Sumatran rhino is the most archaic, first emerging more than 15 million years ago. The Sumatran rhino was closely related to the woolly rhinoceros, but not to the other modern species. The Indian rhino and Javan rhino are closely related and form a more recent lineage of Asian rhino. The ancestors of early Indian and Javan rhino diverged 2–4 million years ago.[21]

The origin of the two living African rhinos can be traced back to the late Miocene (6 mya) species Ceratotherium neumayri. The lineages containing the living species diverged by the early Pliocene (1.5 mya), when Diceros praecox, the likely ancestor of the black rhinoceros, appears in the fossil record.[22] The black and white rhinoceros remain so closely related that they can still mate and successfully produce offspring.

In the wild, adult rhinoceros have few natural predators other than humans. Young rhinos can fall prey to predators such as big cats, crocodiles, wild dogs, and hyenas. Although rhinos are of a large size and have a reputation for being tough, they are actually very easily poached; because it visits water holes daily, the rhinoceros is easily killed while taking a drink. As of December 2009 poaching has been on a global increase whilst efforts to protect the rhinoceros are considered increasingly ineffective. The worst estimate, that only 3% of poachers are successfully countered, is reported of Zimbabwe. Rhino horn is considered to be particularly effective on fevers and even "life saving" by traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, which in turn provides a sales market. Nepal is apparently alone in avoiding the crisis while poacher-hunters grow ever more sophisticated.[26] South African officials are calling for urgent action against rhinoceros poaching after poachers killed the last female rhinoceros in the Krugersdorp Game Reserve near Johannesburg.[27] Statistics from South African National Parks show a record 333 rhinoceros have been killed in 2010.[28]

Horns

Rhinoceros horns, unlike those of other horned mammals (which have a bony core), only consist of keratin. Rhinoceros horns are used in traditional Asian medicine, and for dagger handles in Yemen and Oman. Esmond Bradley Martin has reported on the trade for dagger handles in Yemen.[29]

One repeated misconception is that rhinoceros horn in powdered form is used as an aphrodisiac in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as Cornu Rhinoceri Asiatici It is, in fact, prescribed for fevers and convulsions.[30] Neither have been proven by evidence-based medicine. Discussions with TCM practitioners to reduce its use have met with mixed results since some TCM doctors see rhinoceros horn as a life-saving medicine of better quality than substitutes.[31] China has signed the CITES treaty however, and removed rhinoceros horn from the Chinese medicine pharmacopeia, administered by the Ministry of Health, in 1993. In 2011 in the United Kingdom, the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine issued a formal statement condemning the use of rhinoceros horn.[32] A growing number of TCM educators have also spoken out against the practice.[33] To prevent poaching, in certain areas, rhinos have been tranquilized and their horns removed. Armed park rangers, particularly in South Africa, are also working on the front lines to combat poaching, sometimes killing poachers who are caught in the act. A recent spike in rhino killings has made conservationaists concerned about the future of rhino species. During 2011 448 rhino were killed for their horn in South Africa alone.[34] The horn is incredibly valuable: an average sized horn can bring in much as a quarter of a million dollars in Vietnam and many rhino range States have stockpiles of rhino horn.[35][36] Still, poaching is hitting record levels due to demands from China and Vietnam.[37]

Historical representations

Albrecht Dürer created a famous woodcut of a rhinoceros in 1515, based on a written description and brief sketch by an unknown artist of an Indian rhinoceros that had arrived in Lisbon earlier that year. Dürer never saw the animal itself and, as a result, Dürer's Rhinoceros is a somewhat inaccurate depiction.

There are legends about rhinoceros stamping out fire in Malaysia, India, and Burma. The mythical rhinoceros has a special name in Malay, badak api, where badak means rhinoceros and api means fire. The animal would come when a fire is lit in the forest and stamp it out.[38] There are no recent confirmations of this phenomenon. However, this legend has been reinforced by the film The Gods Must Be Crazy, where an African rhinoceros is shown to be putting out two campfires.

NEW DELHI: A total of 631 animals, including 19 rhinos, died in the recent floods in Kaziranga National Park of Assam, the Rajya Sabha was informed today.

In a written reply to the House, forest and environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan also said that flood is a natural and recurring phenomenon in Kaziranga and it creates a variety of habitats for different species.

"Mortality of wild animals due to flood has been reported during the year only in Kaziranga Tiger Reserve. As reported by the state, a total of 631 animal deaths, including 19 rhinos, have occurred in Kaziranga due to excess water brought by the flood during June-July 2012," she said.

She also informed the House that the flooding results in damage to infrastructure such as roads, anti-poaching camps, artificial high grounds.

"Similar high floods of 1988 and 1998 recorded animal mortality of 1203 and 652 respectively," Natarajan said.

Replying to a separate question on tiger deaths reported in Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand, she said from 2008 till now, there are 19 such incidents of the big cats dying due to natural and other causes.

She said only two incidents of poaching were reported from the national park.

In reply to another question on Tiger Project, she said, "The country level tiger population, estimated once in every four years using the refined methodology, is 1706."

While the lower limit of the tiger population is estimated to be 1520, the upper limit has been fixed at 1909.

Providing details of the 'India State Survey of Forest Report 2011', Natarajan told the House that "Forest and tree cover in the country is 78.29 million hectare, which is 23.81 per cent of the total geographical cover. This includes 2.76 per cent of tree cover."

On the forest cover in hilly and tribal areas, she said, "In the hill and tribal districts of the country, a decrease in forest dover of 548 sq km and 679 sq km respectively has been reported as compared to the previous assessment."

The northeastern states account for one-fourth of the country's forest cover but, "A decline of 549 sq km in forest cover as compared to the previous assessment", she said.

Replying to a query on mangrove cover in the country, Natarajan said there has been an increase of 23.34 sq km during the same period.

More expensive than cocaine, rhino horn is now the party drug of choice among Vietnam’s young things.

Instead of a razor blade and mirror, a textured ceramic bowl is used for grinding down rhinoceros horn into a powder to be mixed with water or wine.

Rhino horn is made of keratin, the same protein as fingernails. Scientists say it has no medicinal value, and users aren’t getting high. The belief in Vietnam is that drinking a tonic made from the horn will detoxify the body after a night of heavy boozing, and prevent a hangover. One Vietnamese news website described rhino horn wine as “the alcoholic drink of millionaires.”

This is the latest twist in South Africa’s devastating rhino poaching crisis, which began with a sudden boom in illegal killings of the endangered animal in 2008 and has worsened every year since. Demand among the newly wealthy in Vietnam is the root of the problem, says TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring group.

Tom Milliken, a rhino expert with TRAFFIC, said that in Vietnam, offering your friends rhino horn at a party has become a fashionable way to show wealth and status.

The way it happens is like this: “I would get my closest friends and we’d go into another room. I would bring out some rhino horn and we’d all take it and then come back to the party,” said Milliken, who studied the phenomenon.

A new TRAFFIC report, co-authored by Milliken, details how surging demand for horn in Vietnam, corruption in South Africa’s wildlife industry, loopholes in regulations and criminal networks have all fed into the poaching epidemic.

Vietnam’s new rich have become the world’s largest consumer group of rhino horn, spurring demand and the continued slaughter of rhinos in South Africa.

Another key group of Vietnamese consumers is people with serious illnesses, in particular cancer, who believe rhino horn can cure them despite the lack of any medical evidence. The TRAFFIC report describes the phenomenon of “rhino horn touts” stalking the corridors at hospitals, seeking out desperate patients with cancer.

An update released by South Africa’s Department of Environmental Affairs said that 339 rhino have been killed illegally in the country since the start of 2012, on track to be the worst year for poaching yet. There have also been 192 poaching-related arrests this year.

South Africa is the primary target for poachers because it is home to 21,000 rhinos, or more than 80 per cent of the world population.

South Africa and Vietnam are beginning to cooperate on the problem, although progress has been slow.

Vietnam’s deputy foreign affairs minister Le Loung Minh visited South Africa last week for talks on illegal trade in wildlife with his counterpart Ebrahim Ebrahim. The two governments are set to sign a memorandum of understanding that would encompass cooperation in criminal investigations. But it has taken a year of sporadic talks to reach this point — a sign of the lack of urgent action.

“South Africa has progressively scaled up its response to rhino crime,” the report noted, pointing to a plan that is being implemented and the recent increase in “high-value arrests.”

South Africa’s environment ministry hired Mavuso Msimang to bring together South Africans in private and public sectors to find the best way to save the rhino.

The project involves studying the potential legalising of the rhino horn trade, a contentious issue. “The government has done a good job of putting their effort behind the saving of the rhino,” Msimang said at the launch of the TRAFFIC report. “It’s got shortcomings, coordination is not always great, but the will to do well is with us,” he said.

Every day in South Africa, a rhinoceros will bleed to death after its horn has been hacked off by poachers. The horns are sold on the black market in Asia, mostly in Vietnam, where they’re believed to have powerful medicinal properties. Dutch veterinarian Martine van Zijl Langhout works together with local wardens to try and protect this threatened species.

Van Zijll Langhout stalks as quietly as possible through the tall grass at Mauricedale Park in the east of South Africa near the famous Kruger Park. She pulls back the trigger on her special tranquiliser rifle, takes aim and fires. The rhinoceros in her sights wobbles groggily for a few minutes before sinking onto its knees and rolling unconscious onto its side. Van Zijll Langhout and her team, carrying a chainsaw, approach the animal cautiously.

Brutal killings

There are some 20,000 rhinos in South Africa, 80 percent of the world population. And every day these animals are slaughtered savagely by poachers. First the rhino is shot to bring it down, and then the horn is hacked off with axes and machetes. The poachers cut as deeply into the animal’s head as possible. Every extra centimetre of horn means more money in their pockets. In 2007, thirteen rhinos in South Africa fell victim to poachers. Last year that number had soared to 448, and the toll so far this year is 312.

Reducing risk

Loud snoring can be heard. The vet blindfolds the rhinoceros and then the park manager starts up the chainsaw and proceeds to slice into the beast’s horn. Van Zijll Langhout monitors its breathing: “This is one way to stop the poachers” she explains. “They want as much horn as possible so rhinos with a small horn are a less attractive target”.

Van Zijll Langhout came to South Africa in 1997 when she was still a student and worked at Kruger Park with lions, elephants and rhinos. She knew she’d found her dream job, and five years ago she returned as a qualified vet. “It’s an unquenchable passion, such an adventure, and every day is different,” she says, “It’s such a privilege to work with African animals and an honour to be able to do something for them”.

No better option

The preventive removal of the rhinoceros’ horn takes about ten minutes. Van Zijll Langhout, an energetic woman in her thirties with wildly curly hair, compares the process to clipping nails or having a haircut: “It’s completely painless; we cut above the blood vessels”. Again she checks the animal’s breathing as its snores echo through the bush. “It’s not nice that we have to do this, but I don’t really see a better option”, she sighs, “and the horn does grow back, otherwise we wouldn’t do it.” The fact that visitors to the park might be disappointed and expect to see rhinos complete with proud curving horns doesn’t bother her: “What matters is the animals’ survival”.

Organised crime

The fight against poaching is a difficult one. “These are professional criminals”, explains Van Zijll Langhout. “This isn’t about poor locals living in huts. Poachers have advanced weapons and sometimes even use helicopters.” The horns are worth more than their weight in gold, so it’s a lucrative trade for organised crime syndicates.

The horn falls to the ground; the team will preserve it and register it. The rhino is given an injection. Within minutes he’s back on his feet and walking off into the bush. His newly weightless head is no guarantee of safety though. A rhino was poached in the park the same week as the horns were sawn off. Even the stump that remains after the procedure is worth big money.

Both black and white rhinoceroses are actually gray. They are different not in color but in lip shape. The black rhino has a pointed upper lip, while its white relative has a squared lip. The difference in lip shape is related to the animals' diets. Black rhinos are browsers that get most of their sustenance from eating trees and bushes. They use their lips to pluck leaves and fruit from the branches. White rhinos graze on grasses, walking with their enormous heads and squared lips lowered to the ground.

White rhinos live on Africa's grassy plains, where they sometimes gather in groups of as many as a dozen individuals. Females reproduce only every two and a half to five years. Their single calf does not live on its own until it is about three years old.

Under the hot African sun, white rhinos take cover by lying in the shade. Rhinos are also wallowers. They find a suitable water hole and roll in its mud, coating their skin with a natural bug repellent and sun block.

Rhinos have sharp hearing and a keen sense of smell. They may find one another by following the trail of scent each enormous animal leaves behind it on the landscape.

White rhinos have two horns, the foremost more prominent than the other. Rhino horns grow as much as three inches (eight centimeters) a year, and have been known to grow up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) long. Females use their horns to protect their young, while males use them to battle attackers.

The prominent horn for which rhinos are so well known has been their downfall. Many animals have been killed for this hard, hair-like growth, which is revered for medicinal use in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. The horn is also valued in North Africa and the Middle East as an ornamental dagger handle.

The white rhino once roamed much of sub-Saharan Africa, but today is on the verge of extinction due to poaching fueled by these commercial uses. Only about 11,000 white rhinos survive in the wild, and many organizations are working to protect this much loved animal.Fast Facts

The black rhino once roamed most of sub-Saharan Africa, but today is on the verge of extinction due to poaching fueled by commercial demand.

The rifle shot boomed through the darkening forest just as Damien Mander arrived at his campfire after a long day training game ranger recruits in western Zimbabwe's Nakavango game reserve. His thoughts flew to Basta, a pregnant black rhinoceros, and her two-year-old calf. That afternoon one of his rangers had discovered human footprints following the pair's tracks as Basta sought cover in deep bush to deliver the newest member of her threatened species.

Damien, a hard-muscled former Australian Special Forces sniper with an imposing menagerie of tattoos, including "Seek & Destroy" in gothic lettering across his chest, swiveled his head, trying to place the direction of the shot. "There, near the eastern boundary," he pointed into the blackness. "Sounded like a .223," he said, identifying the position and caliber, a habit left over from 12 tours in Iraq. He and his rangers grabbed shotguns, radios, and medical kits and piled into two Land Cruisers. They roared into the night, hoping to cut off the shooter. The rangers rolled down their windows and listened for a second shot, which would likely signal Basta's calf was taken as well.

It was an ideal poacher's setup: half-moon, almost no wind. The human tracks were especially ominous. Poaching crews often pay trackers to find the rhinos, follow them until dusk, then radio their position to a shooter with a high-powered rifle. After the animal is down, the two horns on its snout are hacked off in minutes, and the massive carcass is left to hyenas and vultures. Nearly always the horns are fenced to an Asian buyer; an enterprising crew might also cut out Basta's fetus and the eyes of the mother and calf to sell to black magic or muti practitioners. If this gang was well organized, a group of heavily armed men would be covering the escape route, ready to ambush the rangers.

As the Land Cruiser bucked over rutted tracks, Damien did a quick calculation—between his vehicles he had two antiquated shotguns with about a dozen shells. Based on the sound of the shot, the poachers held an advantage in firepower. If the rangers did pick up a trail and followed on foot, they would have to contend with lions, leopards, and hyenas out hunting in the dark.

In the backseat of one of the speeding Land Cruisers, Benzene, a Zimbabwean ranger who had spent nearly a year watching over Basta and her calf and knew the pair intimately, loaded three shells into his shotgun, flicked on the safety, and chambered a round. As we bounced into the night, he said, "It is better for the poachers if they meet a lion than if they meet us."

AND SO GOES A NIGHT on the front lines of southern Africa's ruthless and murky rhino war, which since 2006 has seen more than a thousand rhinos slaughtered, some 22 poachers gunned down and more than 200 arrested last year in South Africa alone. At the bloody heart of this conflict is the rhino's horn, a prized ingredient in traditional Asian medicines. Though black market prices vary widely, as of last fall dealers in Vietnam quoted prices ranging from $33 to $133 a gram, which at the top end is double the price of gold and can exceed the price of cocaine.

Although the range of the two African species—the white rhino and its smaller cousin, the black rhino—has been reduced primarily to southern Africa and Kenya, their populations had shown encouraging improvement. In 2007 white rhinos numbered 17,470, while blacks had nearly doubled to 4,230 since the mid '90s.

For conservationists these numbers represented a triumph. In the 1970s and '80s, poaching had devastated the two species. Then China banned rhino horn from traditional medicine, and Yemen forbade its use for ceremonial dagger handles. All signs seemed to point to better days. But in 2008 the number of poached rhinos in South Africa shot up to 83, from just 13 in 2007. By 2010 the figure had soared to 333, followed by over 400 last year. Traffic, a wildlife trade monitoring network, found most of the horn trade now leads to Vietnam, a shift that coincided with a swell of rumors that a high-ranking Vietnamese official used rhino horn to cure his cancer.

Meanwhile in South Africa, attracted by spiraling prices—and profits—crime syndicates began adding rhino poaching to their portfolios.

Kansas Cosmosphere

The fact that you are able to view the actual Apollo 13 Command Module Odyssey is due a remarkable twenty-year effort by the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center to save the spacecraft.

Following the conclusion of the Apollo 13 mission in April 1970, Odyssey was shipped back to Downey, California, to the North American Rockwell factory where it had been built. The purpose of this move was to conduct an intensive post-flight inspection on the spacecraft, which was normal procedure for all Apollo spacecraft returning from a mission. During these post-flight inspections, many components and systems were removed from the spacecraft to evaluate how they withstood the rigors of the mission. If problems were found, engineering changes would be made to future Command Modules. In addition, many parts were removed to reuse on other missions or were placed in storage as spare parts.

The unusual aspect of Odyssey's post-flight inspection was that virtually its entire interior was removed. Literally tens thousands of parts and systems were placed in government storage throughout the country or sent to the companies that had built them for evaluation. Even though the American public thought the Apollo 13 drama was one of NASA's finest hours, the space agency did not see it that way. They saw the mission as a failure and pressured the Smithsonian Institution -which owned the spacecraft - to send it out of the country. After being placed on short-term display at the Kennedy Space Center, and then in storage for many years, Odyssey was sent to an aviation museum in Paris, France, for exhibition. There it would remain, still gutted and lacking the dignity it so deserved, for more than 15 years.

In the early 1990s, the Cosmosphere began efforts to work with the Smithsonian to develop a plan to bring Apollo 13 back to the United States for restoration and public display. The political challenges in working with both the American and French governments to gain control of such an important historical artifact were immense. Finally in 1995, all political elements fell together and the Smithsonian formally requested that Odyssey be returned to the United States in order to conduct one of the most important and complex restoration projects ever attempted on a space artifact. The only group in the world with the expertise and capability to conduct the restoration was the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center.

The Cosmosphere located nearly 80,000 pieces from the spacecraft, Odyssey, in hundreds of warehouses and storage sites throughout the nation. This work was made all the more difficult because many of the pieces had been recycled after the Apollo 13 mission and flown on other Apollo spacecraft, which greatly added to the amount of paperwork and time involved. In an extraordinary example of thorough detective work, virtually every piece now in the spacecraft has been fully documented to have been inside Odyssey on the day of its launch.

Finally, in November 1995, Odyssey arrived back on American soil and in Hutchinson. Cosmosphere restoration craftsmen began their own two-year long saga to evaluate, disassemble and then completely restore the spacecraft back to its original, immediate post-flight condition. The restoration was completed in full view of hundreds of thousands of museum visitors.

In December 1997, Odyssey's restoration was formally concluded. The spacecraft is now one of the most complete flown Apollo spacecrafts in existence. Its restoration is widely considered one of the most important, complete and historically accurate restorations conducted on a major American space artifact.

Able to get a decent shot of the Neenah Foundry raw material area. Manhole covers start here. A gon of scrap sits at the far end. Two overhead cranes with magnetic discs pick the "recipe" of raw materials and deposit them in buckets that run up to the top of the furnace and dump. For awhile, thanks to a battle of corporate egos, Foundry was not receiving any scrap loads via gons. Apparently, a few beers in a board room made cooler heads prevail.

Tonight I was able to meet up with a client of mine, Paul Weishaar of PPW Motorcars and do a few shoots for his business. He sells a nice variety of automobiles and bikes, depending on what he finds out there to sell. Tonight I had 3 vehicles to shoot: A Jeep Grand Wagoneer, a Ford Expedition, and this particular example: a Moto Guzzi V7 Racer. I had heard of the company before but before I met Paul a year ago, had never seen an example of one of their bikes in person. This thing? It's just plain beautiful. It pays tribute to the cafe racers of yesteryear and looks incredible with the black, white, red, and chrome scheme. This screams 750cc's of Italian motorcycling pleasure. For sale soon!

p.s. I swear this isn't supposed to be an ad, but hey it's a neat bike!

No longer able to do its job.

I was surprised at the detail I was able to pick out in this shot on the moon. Consulting with Professor Google and a lunar map in an astronomy book I've marked out the most prominent features:

Sinus Iridium (Bay of Rainbows)- this is a basaltic lava plain that forms a northwest extension of Mare Imbrium (Sea of Showers). I was surprised to see that the bright rim of Sinus Iridium, the Montes Jura range, showed up nicely on the terminator. At one time the Montes Jura- names for the Jura Mountains in Switzerland- was the rim of a crater that was flooded with lava to form Sinus Iridium.

Copernicus crater during the full moon shows a bright ray system but here the terminator really marks out the walls from where it sits on the eastern edge of Oceanus Procellarum (Ocean of Storms).

Bullialdus crater's isolated location on Mare Nubium (Sea of Clouds) makes it stand out. It's named for the French astronomer Ismael Bullialdus, a contemporary of Johannes Kepler.

During the full moon Tycho crater has a very prominent ray system. Not so much when the lighting is at a different angle but Tycho's young age (approximately 108 million years old) can be discerned from its sharp edges. Some of Tycho's rays extend up to 1500 km from the crater.

The craters Longomontanus (named for a Danish astronomer) and Clavius (named for a German mathematician) are much older than Tycho. Clavius is the third largest crater visible on the Moon's near side.

The cluster of lunar mare are where some of the lunar missions landed. Mare Serenitatus (Sea of Serenity) was the destination of Apollo 17. Mare Crisium (Sea of Crisis) is where the Russian sample return probe Luna 24 landed. Mare Tranquillitatus (Sea of Tranquility) is best known because it was the landing site for Apollo 11. The higher metal content in the basalt that forms this lunar mare gives a bluish tinge compared to the other lunar mare and you can see that bluish tinge in my picture. Mare Fecunditatis (Sea of Fertility) and Mare Nectaris (Sea of Nectar) are smaller lunar mare.

The bright crater and rays I couldn't quite tell- depending on where I looked it up, it was either the crater Furnerius or the crater Stevinus. Guess I have more more lunar geography to learn.

Escape from Planet A to Planet B - is it a real way out or a dream that will never be able to unfold

I was finally able to visit The Succulent Cafe in Oceanside today, they are located at 322 N Cleveland St, in Oceanside, CA. I had been dying to go, I follow them on instagram and just had not gotten over there. There were tons of succulents, and gardens to purchase along with Teas and Coffees. The owner was super friendly and the joint is wall to wall succulents I was so excited to be there. There were huge living walls, and vertical gardens. I snapped a bazillion pics and enjoyed every second! I enjoyed a delicious iced tea of the day, and cannot wait until my next visit!!!

Being able to easily research a subject for school projects was a fantasy just a year ago. The computer lab in the picture once had old, outdated computers with many flaws. The old computers would sometimes crash and would not always work. When in the lab you had to wait sometimes the whole class period for one page to load. This made creating papers for school almost impossible, until we received the computers our newer computer lab had purchased less than a few years back. These newer computers work fast and allow ample time to finish school projects and create amazing essays. It is wonderful that the students at Mark Twain High School are able to further their education through computer technology and not have to worry about problems with the system. By having new and updated computers we are promoting healthy lifestyles in our community by furthering our students’ education.

I was only able to be trackside briefly today, but at a time I hoped to see 66558 t'n't 66593 on a ballast train, followed soon after by 159004 running back to Salisbury from Etches Park in South Western Railway colours.

Excitement rose as the sheds slowed to a crawl to enter Haresfield Loop, only to be dashed when I realised the southbound green signal was for an early running 159004. The resulting 'record shot' is not what I'd hoped for, especially as a bit of trackside clearance is overdue.

Although not able to explore inside the buildings, this facility in Mexico, MO was still cool to see.

Originally the Mexico Fire Brick and Fire Clay Company, founded in either the early 1900's or late 1800's, I am not sure which, it was purchased in 1910 by A.P. Green for a whopping $85,000 and became the A.P. Green Fire Brick Company. Five years later, when the company became incorporated, the value of the equipment and facility had risen to over $200,000. This plant was one of the world's leading producers of brick, and bricks from this plant were even used in the boilers of Navy warships. The military awarded the Army-Navy "E" for Excellence and Maritime "M" to the A.P. Green Company in recognition for its achievements during WWII. Bricks from this factory even line the launch pad at Cape Canaveral. In it's heyday, over 2,000 people were employed and nearly everyone in the town of Mexico could hear the whistle blow for shift changes. Unfortunately in 2002, the plant closed down. A new company by the name of Mid America Brick came by an in 2009, purchased the facility for $9.7 million. Mid America did not last long. In 2013, Mid America filed for bankruptcy and the site was again abandoned. Now the assets are owned by Shamrock Proppants' and the site lies mostly abandoned.

Who has ever been able to capture their dreams? I for one, have. And it is a very magical experience. I never knew why I was able to dream up Ninielle, my Wood Elf, into true being, but I never really wanted to question it. She has been such a joy.

But now I know how hard it is to make a dream a reality. The pain, the exhaustion, and the grief it can cause another being to produce someones dream into reality. And I now know why I was able to bring Ninielle here to my home, and also how to give another lost one, who actually brought her here, to a loving home as well.

Namarie is a being called a Dream Weaver. She has lived here at my home for a countless amount of years, but none of us has ever seen her because she never wished to be seen, being able to become invisible anytime she likes. She looks into our sleeping minds, and picks out our deepest dreams and wishes, and tries to bring them to life for us. It causes her a great pain, and drains her of her magic and energy for a very long time whenever she tries to bring a dream to life. But she doesn't show her fatigue often, though she never smiles, and I believe it's the pain that causes her that melancholy expression.

We all love her, and try our best to never ask for a dream come true, because we know what it costs her, but sometimes, without our knowing or asking, she brings our dreams to life, like she did with Ninielle for me, and we wake up to certain surprises that we never in our waking lives thought would exist.

This was taken a little after the most spectacular moment of the sunset, however I was still able to capture the 'afterglow' so to speak :)

After the Spanish Armada, England was able to expand to the point that it could be said, “The sun never sets on the British Empire.” You don’t get that kind of power without creating more than a little anymosity among those you are ruling, and Britain was no exception. Yesterday, March 5th, was the 243rd Anniversary of what Americans refer to as the Boston Massacre. On March 5, 1770 British troops fired into a rioting mob. A total of five died, and five more were wounded. These victims are often referred to as “the first casualties of the American Revolution.” As the excerpt from the article below shows, the British alienated the Israelis early in their history, too.

European Jewish immigration to Palestine increased dramatically after Hitler’s rise to power in 1933, leading to new land purchases and Jewish settlements. Palestinian resistance to British control and Zionist settlement climaxed with the Arab revolt of 1936-1939, which Britain suppressed with the help of Zionist militias and the complicity of neighboring Arab regimes. After crushing the Arab revolt, the British reconsidered their governing policies in an effort to maintain order in an increasingly tense environment. They issued a White Paper (a statement of political policy) limiting future Jewish immigration and land purchases. The Zionists regarded this as a betrayal of the Balfour Declaration and a particularly egregious act in light of the desperate situation of the Jews in Europe, who were facing extermination. The 1939 White Paper marked the end of the British-Zionist alliance. At the same time, the defeat of the Arab revolt and the exile of the Palestinian political leadership meant that the Palestinian Arabs were politically disorganized during the crucial decade in which the future of Palestine was decided.

There are times when we are controlled by our government and, unfortunately, those in power are not always just and or ethical. That’s why we are advised in Proverbs 29:2, “As the righteous grow powerful people rejoice; but when the wicked rule, people groan.” Knowing what the Arab World has in mind for the Israelis should they ever take control of the Holy Land, it is imperative that we spend our days praying - - praying according to Psalm 122:6 - - praying for the peace of Jerusalem.

During my September 2017 trip to Vancouver, I was able to buy one off Kijiji for an acceptable price.. well, OK, a price that I wanted to actually pay.

So Black Widow here comes from the Marvel Variants line where Japanese artists reimagine popular heroes in a new look.

The figure is not quite 1/6 in scale, and features some additional hands along with a pair of pistols, a knife, a Widows Bite (pre/post explosion), and gauntlet gun firing effects.

Oh, like all other PAK figures, this one also comes with a stand that nobody has ever said nice things about.

Like all other toys of this nature, this Black Widow is an action figure at heart, though unlike the higher end stuff like Hot Toys, doesn't have custom tailored outfits and such.

The PAK kind of exists in its own world of quality and price. Most of the figures, particularly the very recent figures, are of a very good quality, but the prices, depending on which market you buy from, approach that of the 1/6 scale crowd.

Anyway, moving on.

With the exception of an ab crunch and actual pivoting neck, Black Widow here has all articulation points.

Paint applications range from excellent (outfit, head) to pretty good (hands).

Joints, particularly those around the wrist, are a bit of an eyesore though at least being black they blend in with the rest of her.

The actual look of the figure is very nice, and matches the cover art fairly closely. The portrait itself is very sharp looking, with no real bearing towards Scarlet Johansson or any particular comic visage.

Overall, the figure is very nicely done, with good quality, but at MSRP it's a real hard sell.. and not just this one in particular.

I think overall, if you can get the same figures from other companies for the same properties, you'd be better off going elsewhere because the price honestly never matches what you should be getting if you comparison shop.

Or.. do what I do and just wait for the price to drop to a point where i make sense.

César Chávez was able to change a lot of lives through his belief in the fair treatment of all people. His ability to lead people through tough issues and create change has resulted in a stronger country for all citizens. I am glad Chávez was willing to risk upsetting people in order to ensure fair treatment for migrant farm workers.

My drawing includes several different symbols representing different aspects of his incredible legacy. I have chosen to put people with protesting signs in my drawing because he believed in peaceful marching as a way to bring attention to injustice. The first group of people is in silhouette because they didn’t have a real identity when they first entered the country, but then there is a group in color because as they continued working towards better treatment, they became stronger and stronger until change happened. Also I put some grapes on the vine and the rows of crops in order to represent the hard work of the farmers who were treated unfairly. At one point, the farm owners really took advantage of migrant workers – low pay, long hours, and inferior living conditions were just a few of the problems they had to face.

Lastly, I wanted to include some of the images representing the triumph César Chávez was able to achieve. I put the word “Hope” on the top, for the hope Chávez gave us to be treated equally. Lastly I drew a portrait of him because the image is a reminder of what can be achieved when we have a strong leader and a group of people willing to band together for change. The final symbol that I have included is the United Farm Workers logo with the words “si sé puede” which means “yes we can” representing the slogan Chávez repeated throughout his work and is carried out today as we remember his legacy as a leader in civil rights.

My son and me, had a fun time in sanifani waterpark, able seamens! Photo by my wife.

1601 E. Race Ave, Searcy, AR. I traveled to Searcy, AR this afternoon since I was able I get off work in Memphis a little early this afternoon. Another Flickr contact of mine had given me a heads up that this was another in tact Bauhaus store. Well, from these pictures you can tell that the store has unfortunately been stripped of the Bauhaus lettering/design on the walls. I was so curious that I ask a sweet looking older employee if she had worked there long and when the store had been updated. She told me that she had not been working there very long; however the walls had been stripped and painted in May. She said "they" are supposed to be back anytime to put the new "decorations" on the wall. I'm thinking it may be a small scale of what "they" are putting up in the newly remodeled stores, from the looks of the colors on the walls. I was pleasantly surprised at the outside of this store, it's straight from the Superstore days. I was also happy to see that the floors had not really been updated, they still have most of the Superstore colored brick flooring!
