I believe Steve was able to ID this little guy for me. The question I asked is below. I looks like the flowering maple is safe with this little bug, he uses things like that for nectar. However, he is considered a pest for my guava tree. He will also use a few other plants in my yard as a host. I don't mind If he sticks to the additional host plants, that won't be a big deal to me because I planted his other host plants to use as butterfly host plants. Oh, and my backyard and side yard neighbors have papaya trees that he might enjoy. I doubt they will ever discover him. The side yard neighbor does not pick the fruit from their papaya and the backyard neighbors have to use a long handled saw to reach theirs.

My question was: Does anyone know what the cute red bug is on my flowering maple plant? The flowering maple is also known at the Chinese lantern and Chinese hat. So far I have come up empty on google as to what it might be and if it's a friend or foe in my backyard. Info would be appreciated.

Some other host plants include : Info from Wikipedia --- tangerines, okra pods, ripe papaya fruit , pods and blossoms of oleander, seed pods of Jamaica sorrel (Hibiscus sabdariffa), tree hibiscus (Hibiscus syriacus), Turk's cap, teaweed (Sida sp.), Caesar's weed or Spanish cocklebur (Urena lobata), Spanish needle (Bidens pilosa), seaside mahoe or portiatree (Thespesia populnea), rose buds and blossoms, eggplant, nightshade, and guava.

I hope your day is splendid, happy snapping.

I'm back after a bit of a sick spell...I hope to be able to keep this up for another 10 or so pics...! ;)

Grey Heron - Ardea Cinerea

The grey heron (Ardea cinerea) is a long-legged predatory wading bird of the heron family, Ardeidae, native throughout temperate Europe and Asia and also parts of Africa. It is resident in much of its range, but some populations from the more northern parts migrate southwards in autumn. A bird of wetland areas, it can be seen around lakes, rivers, ponds, marshes and on the sea coast. It feeds mostly on aquatic creatures which it catches after standing stationary beside or in the water or stalking its prey through the shallows.

The birds breed colonially in spring in "heronries", usually building their nests high in trees. A clutch of usually three to five bluish-green eggs is laid. Both birds incubate the eggs for a period of about 25 days, and then both feed the chicks, which fledge when seven or eight weeks old. Many juveniles do not survive their first winter, but if they do, they can expect to live for about five years.

In Ancient Egypt, the deity Bennu was depicted as a heron in New Kingdom artwork. In Ancient Rome, the heron was a bird of divination. Roast heron was once a specially-prized dish; when George Neville became Archbishop of York in 1465, four hundred herons were served to the guests.

The grey heron has a slow flight, with its long neck retracted (S-shaped). This is characteristic of herons and bitterns, and distinguishes them from storks, cranes, and spoonbills, which extend their necks.

Fish, amphibians, small mammals and insects are taken in shallow water with the heron's long bill. It has also been observed catching and killing juvenile birds such as ducklings, and occasionally takes birds up to the size of a water rail. It may stand motionless in the shallows, or on a rock or sandbank beside the water, waiting for prey to come within striking distance. Alternatively, it moves slowly and stealthily through the water with its body less upright than when at rest and its neck curved in an "S". It is able to straighten its neck and strike with its bill very fast.

Small fish are swallowed head first, and larger prey and eels are carried to the shore where they are subdued by being beaten on the ground or stabbed by the bill. They are then swallowed, or have hunks of flesh torn off. For prey such as small mammals and birds or ducklings, the prey is held by the neck and either drowned, suffocated, or killed by having its neck snapped with the heron's beak, before being swallowed whole. The bird regurgitates pellets of indigestible material such as fur, bones and the chitinous remains of insects. The main periods of hunting are around dawn and dusk, but it is also active at other times of day. At night it roosts in trees or on cliffs, where it tends to be gregarious.

I have not been able to find out more about this place - I imagine it had something to do with the celebrated Waddington Family, Victorian industrialists who were born in France but educated in England and with English family. William Waddington won the boat race for Cambridge and in later life briefly became Prime Minister of France. I suspect this place was associated with his brother Richard, also a French parliamentarian, as a nearby street is named after him. The view of the castle was pretty fleeting, almost as mysterious as its history.

Victoria and Albert Museum:

Examples of the works of Art in the Museum – South Kensington Museum – Published in 2 Volumes in 1881 – Book 1 - Plate Nos: 37 - 42

Sometime ago I posted some of the illustrations from the above book and I hoped that would be able to find them physically in the museum and photograph them. I took the third set of 15 illustrations from this book and went on the V & A website; Search the Collections. My results were based upon the following criteria:

(1) Items I did locate and photograph.

(2) Items that were in storage

(3) Items I couldn’t find anywhere

So I will be posting them, along with their locations in the museum, against the original plate and photograph from storage (where possible). The original price and any further information I might find.

One thing I didn’t count on, was that renovations would alter the interior of the building so drastically. I have found it very difficult to pin some of these locations down but in the main they have been found.

Not many of the examples shown this time were successful, as can be seen I only found 1 item.

I was lucky to be able to pop down to Labrador Bay in Devon in June 2017, to be able to catch up with one of the UK's rarest residents that are being given a lot of help from the RSPB to maintain the small UK population. I didn't have to look too far on arrival this fella was sitting up on the hedge-line to the car park :-)

Because of the strong wind, the observatory outside the lighthouse was closed.

In the evening, the key was opened and I went up to the outside observatory,

The tripod was useless, and only this one was able to take without swinging.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Jan. 14, 2017

I was with my friend and guide, Ron Bielefeld, in one of the Central Florida lakes were we were able to photograph this lovely Barred Owl.

I was able to capture some beautiful pastel tones in this image taken about 45 minutes before sunset.

I was able to catch this fly-by thanks to Little Linda who is a wetlands regular and an excellent photographer saw him flying in and gave a heads up. but by the time I reacted this was one i really liked out of all of them, there may be one more being it is my favorite wetland species. Have a wonderful day and thank you all so much for visiting.

I've been waiting ages to be able to use this title!

This is another shot for my Seven Sisters Set

The Schachten of the Bavarian Forest are similar to the alpine pastures of the Alps tree-free forest meadows. These free areas were used by the shepherds as overnight accommodation and for breaks. Individual trees were kept on the meadows to provide shady resting places for the animals. These single standing trees have been able to grow unhindered and are often already ancient and shaped by wind and weather. These clearings are especially fascinating because they are the only open spaces in the vast forest area. In the northern part of the Bavarian Forest they are usually named"meadows", while in the area between the mountains "Großer Falkenstein" and "Großer Rachel" they are called "Schachten".

This was yet another house left abandoned. I was able to enter this one from the front door. As I approached the porch I could see some belongings of the prior owner. Toys laid faded yet intact with remnants of clothing scattered about. The inside painted a scene of one final Christmas. The family Christmas tree dried up and fallen over inches from where it once stood. On a rather distressed coffee table stood a red vase with artificial flowers as though never disturbed. A torn couch was moved into the dining room as if the new arrangements were better form those currently taking up shelter. I was not able to venture further, as my co-worker/driver felt uneasy. The pondering questions still remain, where did they go, why did they go. How many more shattered lives will be claimed....

I wasn't able to get out last weekend, but a this morning was different especially as it was bright. I had a tip off about a Mink that's been seen a number of times this week along the river so I thought it was worth checking out. Unfortunately it was a no show, however a pair of Kingfishers were showing albeit rather distant. Nevertheless despite not being a frame filler I think it works as an image.

Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier. À ma grande surprise, cette famille n'avait absolument aucune crainte de mon kayak. J'ai donc pu m'approcher assez pour faire quelques photos.

I was very surprised to see that this family was not scared of my kayak. I've been able to get close enough to get a good shot.

The class 189 locomotives, which were leased from Akiem by TXLogistik, are also new to Brenner traffic. The French company took over various locomotives from MRCE at the end of 2022 and repainted most of them in silver. On 04 March 2023, a tandem consisting of 189 113 and 193 557 hauled the new car transport DGS 48817 from Regensburg Ost to Verona Q.E. in northern Italy. At the level crossing at Vogl, I was able to photograph the train, which was uniformly made up of Hccrrs wagons. The load consisted of BMW vehicles for the Italian market.

What an absolute treat to be able to see this VERY rare warbler two years in a row on the peninsula. Last year, the photo and shooting conditions were horrible.

This year the bird was in deep shade and when I first arrived, in the tall grass. Eventually it flew out and near a tree where it perched for a short time. Of course, my battery died right as it came out in the open. OMG!!! Thankfully, I was able to get a new battery in and get a couple shots. This one is not great but is 200% better than last year's shot.

Even though it was raining, I was still able to get a pretty close look at this hawk today.

Was able to get off a few shots.

Took this on the newly completed BLM Plaza in Washington, DC. With the new pedestrian pathway in the center, I was able to get side by side light trails. Used some new presets in Lightroom to bring out the highlights from the light trails and light posts.

Finger-post near the beach at Llandanwg.

Llandanwg Beach sits between the towns of Barmouth and Harlech on the southern side of Tremadog Bay. It is also part of the wider Snowdonia National Park and situated close to the pretty Afon Dwyryd estuary.

The sand dunes to the back of the beach conceal the tiny church of Saint Tanwg which dates from the 13th century. A small path winds through the dunes and leads you to the beach from the central car park area or you can take a trail from Cardigan Bay. As you sit on the pristine sands you will also be able to enjoy vistas of the rugged Rhinog Mountains in the distance.

The beach here shelves gently into the sea making this a good place to swim, although there is no lifeguard so care should be taken. When the tide is low, it reveals a causeway out to pretty Mochras which is also known by its local nickname of Shell Island due to the plethora of different hued shells found on the its beach.

Due to its strategic position, Llandanwg Beach is shielded from the well known Welsh winds which can be a little fresh at times meaning that you can enjoy this area even in the off-season. The beach is also well-loved by locals including fisherman who come here for the plentiful supplies of bass, mackerel, flatfish, and dogfish. With that in mind keen anglers will find plenty to do here, or you can explore dainty rock pools or simply go for a stroll on the soft, pristine sand.

Amenities at Traeth Llandanwg include disabled access and the village is also home to the quaint Y Maes Cafe close to the beach which operates from June to October.

Vincent Van Gogh has a few quotes that I like very much. I will share other photos from the day we went to the exhivit. I am not always able to identifie the name of the painting but maybe you will help.

It may not be widely known yet, but Santa Claus himself also has magical powers, and in times of need, it is activated, (as is the case now, because there are no reindeer available).

How it works exactly is not entirely clear, but our photographer from the 'Origami Newspaper' was able to take a picture of it. Here we see a group of 4 Santa Clauses holding each other and then suddenly standing in the light. The energy comes from within and also indicates the direction that each person should take to get to the different places of the human world. Then they suddenly left like a flash of light. Maybe you'll see them tonight.

Ecco perche' non riuscivo a vedere la partita!

Happily, we were able to sort out Facebook, and I am back on my computer! Let's hope this is where I stay now!

With heartfelt and genuine thanks for your kind visit. Have a beautiful day, be well, keep your eyes open, appreciate the beauty surrounding you, enjoy creating, stay safe, and laugh often! ❤️❤️❤️

After not being able to access Yahoo (and my email) at all and having limited and intermittent access to Flickr which are on Firefox, while having perfect access to other things through Explorer, I never thought to refresh my modem. But being the electronic idiot I am and ready to throw the computer off the deck, I thought I'd try it just for grins. Well, guess what. As the Moody Blues once said, "Another day's useless energy spent." I hate this stuff.

I was able to enjoy a little hike in the rain yesterday before sundown. By the time we left the park, I was soaked... But it was well worth it having the park pretty much to ourselves.

Poor birds are trying to nest in one of two boxes, but that one damned House Sparrow keeps guarding both of them, not letting any bird other around. Immediate attack. I need to rid myself of that house sparrow . . . he chirps and chirps, but I don't think a female is interested. (I know these are my Tree Swallows from previous years, for I've been able to walk up closely and talk to them . . . and they talk back. So cool!)

I am having an internal conflict as to whether or not I want to trade my Outback in for a new one . . .

Thanks for Viewing.

Able to get out in some sunshine yesterday afternoon. Scotland's weather today has restored to default settings :-(

Last night I was able to observe a beautiful sky from the office window, with beautifully formed clouds that moved quickly in the wind, backlit by the almost full moon ... so I quickly grabbed the telephoto lens and tripod ...

Thank you for your visit and comments. They are very much appreciated.

#sliderssunday

This was an extremely rare sighting of Crocodilus Cirrocumulus, the ever-elusive (and always hungry) Cloud Croc. I almost missed it, but luckily, I looked up at the right moment and was able to capture the moment when it was about to nibble on (or rather take a hearty bite of) the roof of Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus (MELH), a prominent building in Berlin's government district. I'm not sure where in terms of culinary quality MELH is placed but the Cloud Croc must have changed its mind at the last minute because the roof is still intact. Maybe this particular specimen didn't like the taste of modern architecture or the materials used in the construction (Cloud Crocs are known for their extremely sensitive sense of smell)... Well, we will never know but at least my photo is proof that Crocodilus Cirrocumulus exists.

This is some minimalist cloud creature fun for Sliders Sunday, another oldie that I wanted to upload for a long time but always forgot about when I returned to my newest images in LR. Out of sight, out of mind, I guess. When I took the photo, I didn't even notice the croc (or maybe dragon or snake, what do you see?) but thought that the cloud (cirrocumulus, I'd say) looked as if it had been shaped by the roof. It was a quick snap before the cloud changed its shape and the creature was gone.

I'd processed the photo a long time ago, and only added some "Brilliance and Warmth" to it in Color Efex yesterday when I decided it was finally time for an upload. So, unfortunately, I can't tell you much about the previous processing steps. I think I enhanced the clarity and did some denoising before, and I'm sure other stuff as well because almost all my images are post-processed (often a lot) because I enjoy processing as much as photography itself.

HSS, Everyone!

I was finally able to wipe the dust off my Canon mirrorless camera and put it to good use the other night at Tidelands Park in Coronado.

They're intent on eating and mating. And are not as "flighty" as they normally are. Not sure that's a good thing but I so appreciate being able to watch & marvel at them from just an inch or two away. 💓

Lovely to be able to pick up my 6 year old granddaughter and take her to the bluebell woods just down the road. I should have realised I have the perfect blonde model available. She will brighten up the slate quarry.

Captured in low light conditions, could be clearer in ideal conditions, but sill able to tell a story

American Oystercatchers appear to be extremely patient parents. This adult was attempting to feed an insect to its chick of just a few days old. Twice the young shorebird tried and failed to keep the bug in its small beak. Each time the adult picked the insect up off the ground and handed it to the baby, showing no signs of frustration. Finally, after the third try this young chick was able to swallow its meal whole. It would have been a beautiful, heartwarming moment if the young chick hadn’t greedily driven its sibling away only moments before, keeping the food for itself. Don’t judge too harshly though. It’s tough out there in the wild and fighting for food, and survival, is something animals must learn at a young age. Fortunately, both Oystercatcher parents share feeding responsibilities and the chicks were well fed.

...to view the entire sunball rise this morning with the naked eye....my camera apparently enjoyed the sun rising over Lewis Bay on Cape Cod, Mass. as well!

I'm so fortunate to be able to photograph these wonderful nighttime hunters during the day. Most of the day they are sleeping and I waited and waited for this one to open it's eyes high up in an old oak tree, I'm not sure what got this ones attention, but I was there to capture it.

Despite not being able to visit a few iconic places, the forever changing weather conditions enabled me to get some nice photos.

I couldn't ask for a better lighting condition when we arrived at Grundarfjörður in the early afternoon. Kirkjufell Mountain was beautifully lit up and partially bathed in golden light!

You read it correctly, it's was only 2pm in the afternoon!!!

In less than an hour of time, the rain would arrive and all good lights were lost for hours to come.

Dear Flikrites, keep putting your 💕in your photos!

I am always grateful for your visit, wishing you a very happy weekend! 🌻🌞

I was able to observe and photograph this female praying mantis in the garden for more than two months last summer until mating.

She has now laid her eggs in several egg packets, called oothecae, in various lavender bushes. The offspring of 2024 are therefore taken care of.
