The Common Reed Bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus) is a passerine bird in the bunting family Emberizidae. It breeds across Europe and much of temperate and northern Asia. Most birds migrate south in winter, but those in the milder south and west of the range are resident. It is common in reedbeds and also breeds in drier open areas such as moorland and cultivation.
The common reed bunting is a medium-sized bird, 13.5–15.5 cm long, with a small but sturdy seed-eater's bill. The male has a black head and throat, white neck collar and underparts, and a heavily streaked brown back. The female is much duller, with a streaked brown head, and is more streaked below. My first attempt at Macro photography since my new lens arrived two days ago. Gales and rain have finally stopped so managed a few clicks in the garden this evening
Sony A9II +90mm f2.8 @ 1/320 f14 iso 320 + Godox TTL fill flash, hand held auto focus, one image @ 30 cm distance.
No need for tripod with this set up. 10 stops of image stabilisation lens 5 and camera 5, wasp kept moving other wise I could have shot at 1/100 shutter speed hand held- no wind. Auto focus on this camera is superior to manual focus despite all the experts saying use manual focus for single shot macro photography

The Sedge Warbler (Acrocephalus schoenobaenus) is an Old World warbler in the genus Acrocephalus. It is a medium-sized warbler with a brown, streaked back and wings and a distinct pale supercilium. Sedge Warblers are migratory, crossing the Sahara to get from their European and Asian breeding grounds to spend winter in Africa. The male's song is composed of random chattering phrases and can include mimicry of other species. The Sedge Warbler is mostly insectivorous.
The song is varied, rushed and chattering, with sweeter phrases and some mimicry, typical of the Acrocephalus warblers. It is composed of phrases in random order, so that it is never the same. Male Sedge Warblers which have the widest repertoire mate with the largest number of females.
All Sedge Warblers spend winter in sub-Saharan Africa, from Senegal in the west to Ethiopia in the east, and as far south as the eastern Cape Province of South Africa and northern Namibia. The route taken on the southward migration, and eventual wintering grounds, correspond to the birds' breeding grounds. Birds ringed in the United Kingdom and Netherlands are later found from south-west Iberia to Italy; birds from Sweden are recovered in central Europe and Italy; while Finnish birds are found in north-east Italy and Malta east to the Aegean region. Sedge Warblers from the former Soviet Union take routes via the eastern Mediterranean Sea and Middle East. Loss of wetland areas for feeding on migration, and the expansion of the Sahara desert, pose threats to the Sedge Warbler's breeding population. Birds begin leaving Africa in late February, fatten up at wetlands before and probably after crossing the Sahara, and arrive in Europe from March onwards. (wikipedia)
The reed beds and surrounding hedgerows in Pollardstown Fen, Co. Kildare, were full of Sedge Warbler recently when I stopped in on my way back to Dublin from Cork. Fantastic to see and hear so many.

The White-throated Dipper (Cinclus cinclus) is an aquatic passerine bird found in Europe and the Middle East, also known as the European Dipper or just Dipper. The species is divided into several subspecies on colour differences, especially of the pectoral band. The Dipper of Great Britain and Ireland is known as the "Brown-Bellied" Dipper (C. c. gularis), while the Irish race is Cinclus cinclus hibernicus.
The Dipper is a rotund, short-tailed bird, dark above and white-breasted, closely associated with swiftly running rivers and streams or the lakes into which these fall. The Dipper often perches bobbing spasmodically with its short tail uplifted on the rocks round which the water swirls and tumbles.
It acquired its name from these sudden dips, not from its diving habit, though it dives as well as walks into the water. It flies rapidly and straight, its short wings whirring swiftly and without pauses or glides, calling a shrill zil, zil, zil. It will then either drop on the water and dive or plunge in with a small splash. From a perch it will walk into the water and deliberately submerge, but there is no truth in the assertion that it can defy the laws of specific gravity and walk along the bottom.

I was taking pictures of birds but noted a couple with two older people and a pastor having a wedding... No other people or a photographer., they used an iPhone...
So, I started shooting the wedding with a 200-600mm lens. This is just one picture from that wedding, I like it a lot...

Fushimi Inari-Taisha's "senbon-Torii".
Instead of the usual and by now boring shots, the only way for any distinctive shot of this subject is extreme perspective (12mm being better than 16mm) and at sunrise or sunset.
Staying on theme, Sony has just released an utterly boring A9ii, at least it was done without fanfare, nary a whimper even, puts even Sergei Bubka to shame though with his incremental world record attempts.
To be fair however, Sony did recently put in a lot of useful firmware updates for the original A9 instead of holding them off for the A9ii.
Will probably get that A7R4 eventually but even then, not sure if I even need that when its 61mp sensor came at the expense of more noise and the dual-gain bump now at a less practical 1 stop lower. More of the same, why bother?
Looks like R&D budgets getting crimped in a fast declining market.

This bird was very alarmed at a squirrel that was in the tree it was perched on. I'm not sure why, as far as I know breeding season is over, maybe a territorial thing?
Barred Owls always present a problem at Circle B Bar Reserve. Since they are most active as the sun is setting it usually calls for very high ISO's. Since I don't use a tripod any longer handholding was a must. My friend Prith challenged me to lower my shutter to gain a lower ISO so I lowered it to 1/400. He laughed. "No Mike, lower it to 1/100" What? At 600mm handheld? So I tried it and couldn't believe the results. The image stabilization combo of this body and lens is amazing. To our eye this owl was in complete silhouette but the camera settings brought it back. Now if you want to pixel peep and can tear this image apart, but for my purposes I was amazed.

The Black Guillemot or Tystie (Cepphus grylle) is a medium-sized alcid.
Adult birds have black bodies with a white wing patch, a thin dark bill, and red legs and feet. They show white wing linings in flight. In winter, the upperparts are pale grey and the underparts are white. The wings remain black with the large white patch on the inner wing.
Their breeding habitat is rocky shores, cliffs and islands on northern Atlantic coasts in eastern North America as far south as Maine, and in western Europe as far south as Ireland. They are one of the few birds to breed on Surtsey, Iceland a new volcanic island. In the UK it is a fairly common breeding bird in western and northern Scotland and Ireland. In the rest of Great Britain they only breed at St. Bees Head in Cumbria, the Isle of Man and on east Anglesey in north Wales. Some birds breed in Alaska where their range overlaps with the similar Pigeon Guillemot.
These birds often overwinter in their breeding areas, moving to open waters if necessary, but usually not migrating very far south.
They dive for food from the surface, swimming underwater. They mainly eat fish and crustaceans, also some mollusks, insects and plant material. (wikipedia)

The European Stonechat (Saxicola rubicola) is a small passerine bird that was formerly classed as a subspecies of the Common Stonechat. Long considered a member of the thrush family Turdidae, genetic evidence has placed it and its relatives in the Old World flycatcher family Muscicapidae. It is slightly smaller than the European Robin. Both sexes have distinctively short wings. The summer male has black upperparts, a black head, an orange throat and breast, and a white belly and vent. It also has white half-collar on the sides of its neck, a small white scapular patch on the wings, and a very small white patch on the rump often streaked with black. European Stonechats breed in heathland, coastal dunes and rough grassland with scattered small shrubs and bramble, open gorse, tussocks or heather. They are short-distance migrants or non-migratory. The male's song is high and twittering like a Dunnock. Both sexes have a clicking call like stones knocking together. Saxicola rubicola hibernans occurs in northwestern Europe in Atlantic coastal areas, in southwestern Norway, Great Britain, Ireland and northwestern France. (wikipedia)
