State Theatre, 123 East Washington Street, Washington, Iowa. This theatre is recognized by Guinness World Records as the oldest continually operating movie theater in the world. It opened in 1893 as the Graham Opera House and screened its first film on May 14, 1897, with a cinematograph made in Paris.

 

A fire destroyed the original Graham Opera House in 1892. Architectural firm Foster & Liebbe drafted the plans for a replacement venue, which was constructed in 1893 at a cost of $35,000. The second Graham Opera House opened on November 27, 1893. After showing its first movie in 1897, the venue thereafter became mixed-use, retaining its live theatre programming in addition to movies.

 

In 1921, the Graham Opera House was purchased by Winfield Smouse, a local businessman. Smouse leased the property to Ralph and Clyde Pratt, who at the time operated an additional theater in the city. In 1931, the interior of the Graham Opera House was remodeled. In conjunction, the venue was renamed to the State Theatre. Its hosting of professional live theatre companies ceased at that time; the stage was mostly used by local productions until it was removed to make way for a newer movie screen. On the morning of November 17, 2010, the State Theatre's projection room caught on fire from a cigarette discarded in a trash can. The venue was subsequently closed for repairs and reopened in April 2011.

 

Una bellezza naturale (Rosa laxa)

Le Rose botaniche sono quelle specie di Rose che si ritrovano in natura, che nascono spontaneamente e le varietà e gli ibridi nati spontaneamente da esse. Si tratta di rose a fiore semplice, a volte semidoppio, non rifiorenti e molto resistenti alle malattie. In natura esistono circa una cinquantina di specie di rose botaniche e una di queste è la Rosa laxa che viene largamente utilizzata come portainnesto per la produzione di Rose frutto di ibridazioni da parte dell'uomo, infatti questa in fotografia è nata dal piede di un diverso cespuglio di Rose nel mio giardino poichè, a volte, il portainnesto prende il sopravvento sulla pianta a cui dà vita.

Sono particolarmente indicate per siepi grazie al loro portamento morbido e arcuato.

  

The botanical Rose are those species of Roses that we found in nature, that they are spontaneously born and the varieties and the hybrids been spontaneously born by them. They are Roses with a simple flower, at times halfdouble, not reflowering and very resistant to the diseases.

In nature they exist about fifty species of botanical Roses and one of these it is the Rose laxa that it is largely used as rootstock for the production of Roses that they derive from hybridizations from the man, in fact this in photo is born from the foot of a different bush of Rose in my garden since, at times, the rootstock has the upper hand on the plant to which gives life..

They are particularly suitable for hedges for their soft and arcuated bearing.

   

Encontrar Cala Barques, en Manacor (Mallorca), tiene su aquel. Es una cala virgen de acceso complicado a la que llegué gracias a las indicaciones de una amiga y a que Google Maps lo tenía como punto de interés.

 

La cala no está señalizada y se accede a través de una pista de tierra de algo más de medio kilómetro y muy estrecha, lo que me hizo estar a punto de perdérmela, y después hay que continuar por un sendero de tierra que cruza unas fincas a las que se accede saltando un portón cerrado con cadena, pero entreabierto.

 

Y al final de un buen paseo que te puede matar de calor te encuentras con una cala que tiene unas aguas cristalinas y rodeada por un pequeño acantilado donde hay cuevas, visitables hace unos años pero cuya promoción turística se ha abandonado. Por ello quedan restos de escaleras y de accesos en la zona de las cuevas, aunque no las vi porque me fui derechito a la otra punta de la playa para hacer fotos.

 

Según leo por ahí hace años iban a esta playa las vacas de una granja cercana, lo que era muy apreciado por algunos bañistas y fuertemente criticado por otros, ya que consideraban que las soltaban aposta para espantar a la gente.

 

La playa es mayoritariamente textil y está masificada, pero en la parte más alejada alguna gente hace nudismo y desciende al agua por el acantilado, que tiene un acceso muy sencillo en algunas partes

A colorful corner on a Not so colorful Street.

I saw Duru sitting on a wall in Nottingham, so went over and introduced my stranger project to her. Across the road was a church, and I thought the colour of Duru’s hair and top would go well with the tones of the stonework. The wind caused a few problems as it blew Duru’s hair across her face so I tried to time my shots to when the breeze wasn’t as strong. I do like how the wind added some movement to Duru’s hair and that the weak sunlight was strong enough to provide some effective side lighting to her hair.

 

Duru is from Istanbul, Turkey, and had come to England to study in Nottingham. Duru had just begun her first year of three in music business. Duru told me she had chosen England over America as it was closer to home and she also thought America was too big.

 

Duru plays the cello and was a little disappointed that she hadn’t been able to bring it with her due to cost. She would have had to buy a plane seat for the cello as well as herself and couldn’t justify the expense. Duru used to play her instrument in an orchestra back home in Istanbul but now plays for her own enjoyment.

 

If I could grant Duru a wish what would it be? “To bring her cello to the U.K.” she said.

 

I asked Duru what her guilty pleasure was and she said eating too much chocolate.

Disneyland Paris, originally Euro Disney Resort, is an entertainment resort in Marne-la-Vallée, a new town located 32 km east of the centre of Paris, and is the most visited theme park in all of Europe. This part of Dr. King's speech has always struck a certain chord with me. I don't know about the rest of America, why some voted for and some voted against Barack Obama.

 

But I do know my own heart - my own soul. And I know as truth that I voted against Obama not for the color of his skin, nor even the content of his character, but the strength of his ideas.

 

And while I probably will not be happy with the direction the Democrats take the country, I am proud that our nation has taken a monumental leap towards realizing Dr. King's immortal dream.

 

Forty-five years ago he stood in our nation's capital, proclaiming a truth that had been supressed for generations beyond count - that on the inside, we are all the same.

 

But there is much yet to be done. We got here because our parents proclaimed that truth to us. We must proclaim that truth to our children, and our children's children. If we want to remain united, if we want to remain free, we must never, ever let go of that universal idea, an idea that echoes across time, from the dusty hills of Palestine 2,000 years ago to a sweltering hall in Philadelphia 232 years ago; an idea that freedom constantly declares against tyranny:

 

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

The Rufous Hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus) is a small hummingbird, about 8 cm long (3 inches) with a long, straight and very slender bill. The female is slightly larger than the male.

The adult male, (shown in the photo), has a white breast, rufous face, upperparts, flanks and tail and an iridescent orange-red throat patch (gorget). Some males have some green on back and/or crown. The female has green upperparts with some white, some iridescent orange feathers in the center of the throat, and a dark tail with white tips and rufous base. Females and the rare green-backed males are extremely difficult to differentiate from Allen's Hummingbird. This is a typical-sized hummingbird, being a very small bird. It weighs 2–5 g (0.071–0.18 oz), measures 7–9 cm (2.8–3.5 in) long and spans 11 cm (4.3 in) across the wings.

They feed on nectar from flowers using a long extendible tongue or catch insects on the wing. These birds require frequent feeding while active during the day and become torpid at night to conserve energy.

 

Because of their small size, they are vulnerable to insect-eating birds and animals.

 

Exposition Park in Los Angeles, California. It has been called "one of the city's best-kept secrets". It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.
