Winter Snow - Landscape

I captured this scene while driving through Mendon Ponds Park. It was a lovely winter day. It's so exhilarating to see the unbroken snow, like it was created just for me.

Mendon Ponds Park is a National Natural Landmark

Pura magia... Sublime... No hay palabras para describir tanta belleza.

----------------------

Touring the Portuguese Algarve reaches the edge of Europe. Sagres is last village continental Europe. A small town atmosphere hippy, surfer and lover of life naturally. An unsophisticated local services which reconciles us with simplicity.

In Cape St. Vincent were formed the great navigators who opened the routes around the world in the sixteenth century. Whose lighthouse is saying goodbye to all ships leaving Europe to cross the Atlantic. A windswept landscape and scorched by the sun, a high coast on a rough sea and a totally clean air and natural.

Every day people come to sit and wait in the rocks of the cliffs, and admire one of the most wonderful performances: the sunset over the Atlantic ... Pura magic ... Sublime ... No words can describe such beauty.

A little bit of history

Two large landslides dominate the story of Derborence.

On the 23rd September 1714, a huge part of rock detached itself from the face under the summit of Diablerets, at a place called Derotchieu and this can still be seen very clearly today. The biggest part of these rocks landed mainly on the left side of the river and afterwards it spread out on the right side until the "Vallon de Cheville" 1500 meters below. It spread in the shape of a cone between the pastures of Derborence and the Godey, over 1800 meters wide. The largest part of the rock fall stayed at this point and a certain amount went through the narrow part of the valley and stopped at about 1100 meters, having slid over 5 and a half kilometers in total.

It has been estimated that the thickness of this rock fall between the Godey and Derborence is around 100 meters. According to the testimony of a local priest from Ardon, fifty five chalets and fourteen people were buried under the rubble and only five people were saved. He came up to the site two days after the catastrophe, to exorcise the "Devils of the Mountains". A second rock fall happened at the same place in 1749. The mass of rocks slid down more on the right side and here started the formation of the lake of Derborence. The people, who were staying in this mountain area during the summer months, could see the rocks gradually beginning to fall, and therefore they decided to leave early and were able to lead their animals to safety. This time 40 chalets and alpine huts were buried, but no human lives were lost.

A street scene from rural India..

Here is a very common scene from rural India. You see a schoolboy with his big/heavy bag full of books walking to the school. I was both happy and sad to see hundreds of kids doing this, during our recent road trip.

On one hand it was heartening to see the enthusiasm among these kids and even though they have to walk several miles everyday to reach their schools, they still make it a point to go everyday because education is of utmost importance to achieve progress. On the other hand, its painful to see that they have to undergo so many hardships for even the most basic needs.

We gave a ride to couple of kids on our way and they were quite happy with their school education, even though they had to walk 5miles everyday to reach their schools. Looking at scenes like this reminds me of how fortunate I was to have all facilities at relative comfort.

Have a good day, my dear friends!

I appreciate your visit and kind comments. Thank you!

It all started before Christmas when I saw a video of people ice skating on a frozen Tenaya Lake in Yosemite's high country. Wow, that's cool, that doesn't happen very often, I thought. Then, about halfway through the video, the filmer unwittingly showed something that had my eyes bugging out of my head: thick and crunchy pressure ridges and cracks running through the vast ice sheet covering Tenaya's surface. And that sealed the deal: since Tioga Pass is open this late into the year maybe once in a generation, I knew I needed to take advantage of this unique photographic opportunity.

The week after Christmas I set out for three days of camping, hiking, exploring, and shooting the high country near Tuolumne Meadows. My timing was just right and I had three days of incredible shooting conditions and more natural beauty than you can shake a stick at. This shot is from the sunset on the first night: a rip-roaring pink and purple glow which set the icy reflections and cracks aflame on Tenaya Lake.

If you've never been to Yosemite you should go. Even if you miss the frozen lakes on Tioga Pass, the park is still a wonder that will leave your jaw on the floor. Can't wait to lead a workshop here in Spring with Jim Patterson.

Post-Processing

----------------------

In Raw Converter (Nikon Capture NX2)

- Processed single raw file twice, once for sky and foreground, and once for the granite domes

- Global contrast for added pop

- Local contrast in the foreground to bring out the cracks and bubbles

In Photoshop:

- Manual blend of two tiffs for master composite

- Selective sharpening of the ice cracks and bubbles in the foreground, as well as the domes

- A "repair" layer to clone out some ice chunks people had thrown all over the lake, as well as some tracks carved into the ice by skaters

- Soft light burn / dodge layer, dodged through luminosity masks to bring out the thin ice crack in the lower right

- Curves layer to add a little more contrast to foreground

- Color balance to remove a lot of excess purple cast from the foreground caused by the increase in contrast (side note, just realized I could've also fixed this issue by changing my above curves layer to the "luminosity" blend mode to affect brightness values and not color values)

- Curves layer to add a little brightness to domes

- Color balance through a luminosity mask to remove excess warm cast from trees

All the best!

After seeing a shot like this from Robert Kroenert a few years ago I was inspired to give it a try. It seems like I missed it every time since the Trans America Pyramid light is only on for about one month during the Holiday Season.

This year, I was prepared and captured this scene with focal lengths ranging from 100-800mm. This scene was not as easy as I thought it would be, especially at 800mm. Some of the challenges while trying to frame the pyramid perfectly in the center of the tower were: the winds, tripod movement, precise manual focusing, camera shake, etc....One of the best parts of this scene is that the fog rolled in, just in time. More importantly it's placement between the city skyline and tower. It added an additional element to the scene and helped calm the highlights in the buildings. Much thanks to ACP for the location tips.

I hope everyone had a great Holiday Season and start to the New Year. May the light be with you, no matter what light your chasing. Jave

Mont Blanc (French) or Monte Bianco (Italian), meaning "White Mountain", is the highest mountain in the Alps, Western Europe and the European Union. It rises 4,810.45 m (15,782 ft)[2] above sea level and is ranked 11th in the world in topographic prominence. It is also sometimes known as La Dame blanche (French for "the White Lady") or Il Bianco (Italian for "the White One").

The mountain lies between the regions of Aosta Valley, Italy, and Haute-Savoie, France and the location of the summit is on the watershed line between the valleys of Ferret and Veny in Italy and the Arve Valley in France.

The two most famous towns near Mont Blanc are Courmayeur in Aosta Valley, Italy, and Chamonix in Haute-Savoie, France—the site of the first Winter Olympics. A cable car ascends and crosses the mountain from Courmayeur to Chamonix.

Begun in 1957 and completed in 1965, the 11.6 km (7¼ mi) Mont Blanc Tunnel runs beneath the mountain between these two countries and is one of the major trans-Alpine transport routes.

The Mont Blanc massif is popular for mountaineering, hiking, skiing and snowboarding.

The summit of Mont Blanc is a thick, perennial ice and snow dome whose thickness varies, so no exact and permanent summit elevation can be determined. But accurate measurements have been made. For a long time its official elevation was 4,807 m (15,771 ft). Then in 2002, the IGN and expert surveyors, with the aid of GPS technology, measured it to be 4,810.40 m (15,782 ft 2 in).

Courmayeur is an Italian town and comune in the autonomous region of Aosta Valley, in northern Italy. It is located at the foot of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in western Europe, in the Graian Alps range, and is crossed by the Dora Baltea. Courmayeur shares the summit of Mont Blanc with its neighboring commune of Chamonix in France, and owns the title of highest commune in Italy.

Ilusión, Navidad, pon tus sueños a volar.

Siembra paz, brinda amor, que el mundo entero pide más.........
