EXPLORE # 149

I always enjoy trying to catch the light trails from the London buses at night...this one is in St Pauls, London.

St Paul's Cathedral is the Anglican cathedral on Ludgate Hill, in the City of London, and the seat of the Bishop of London. The present building dates from the 17th century and is generally reckoned to be London's fifth St Paul's Cathedral, although the number is higher if every major medieval reconstruction is counted as a new cathedral. The cathedral sits on the edge of London's oldest region, the City, which originated as a Roman trading post along the edge of the River Thames. The cathedral is one of London's most visited sites.

The nearest London Underground station is St. Paul's.

One of the best sunsets I've seen around here for a while!

It's hard to tell in this small size that the dark "cloud" over the horizon is actually a fog bank or more accurately a marine layer hovering over the water. I wish I could have gotten closer to water here but all access points are on private property and these locals (mostly fishermen) have shotguns! :-)

_____________________________________________________________________________

EDIT:Finally got a chance to add more info and my other crap! :-)

What:

The day after our last snow storm.

It was so friggin' windy that the snow blew off the tops of the trees except where they were down in this hollow!

Where:

Terence Bay

Nova Scotia, Canada

(I added it to the map in case you want to find it)

When:

Sunset @ around 5pm

About:

This is the first HDR I've done in a little while. I wanted to try to capture all the great colors in the sky as well as the depth of that fog hovering over the water on the horizon.

Sometimes photography is just about being at the right place at the right time. I didn't plan to take this picture at all. I was just driving home after I already took some pictures, when the sky suddenly turned pink. I stopped the car immediately, got out and took a couple of shots. I was just in time, because 2 minutes later the pink sky was completely gone. I already posted a similar shot a few days ago but I thought this sunset was so beautiful it deserved another exposure. Besides that, the colors are very Flickr-ish.

What I like most on this photo isn't the colors but the people on the foreground. If you look closely they are communicating with each other, they are not skating.

Note: these are the real colors as spotted that day, no PS enhancements needed. Well, only a few basic corrections.

The Netherlands is a small country of 16 million people, but it boasts a quarter of a million competitive speedskaters, and millions more who skate for fun. What's the story? Natural ice in the Netherlands is a rare occurrence. In fact, some winters there's no natural ice at all. Maybe that explains why the Dutch love to skate outdoors. They hardly ever get the chance! But when a cold wave hits, and the interconnected maze of canals, rivers and lakes freeze over, it's a spontaneous celebration, a national holiday. Businesses close their doors and everyone goes skating. According to Richard van Ammerzoden, a skater from Rotterdam, skating in Holland originated as a poor man's sport. Isolated by mud and water in the damp winters, rural farmers prayed for ice. When it came, just like Hans Brinker, they strapped on their wooden skates with leather thongs, and traveled great distances to visit friends and relatives they hadn't seen in months. Then they skated home.

Perhaps that explains the origin of the Elfstedentocht or "Eleven Cities Tour", a 200-kilometer mega-tour in the province of Friesland known as "the mother of all skating tours." In the 1890s, some Frisian farmer with well-developed leg muscles tried to skate through all eleven cities of Friesland in a single day. He succeeded, and the rest is history.

Photo taken at the Ransdorper Die nearby Amsterdam. Dutch skaters enjoying the kilometers of natural ice. During the month January and February most geese can be found here in Waterland. The geese are migratory, moving south or west in winter. The greylag geese fly in V- formation to save themselves energy. The next days extreme low temperature of -15 degrees Celcius expected. Ofcourse I do skate too and planed to have some skating holidays ;-)

Zo'n 1000 jaar geleden of eerder begon men te schaatsen .

He has his eye on me most of the time. Border Collies like to stare, and Barney is no exception, I think this is why is good at having his photo taken, many dogs are worried by the lens (apparently they think its a hard stare from the alpha!) but Barney is happy to look straight back at you, its not a challenge, he's just not afraid of eye contact, in fact he likes it!

I took this shot this morning, we were playing on the field, its cropped a lot but for some reason I seem to like it, anyway I kept coming back to look at it, so thought I'd put it up!

Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. The name is a derivative from Amstel dam pointing to the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel. The city is known for its historic port, the Rijksmuseum, the red-light district (de Wallen), the liberal coffeeshops, and the canals which have led to Amsterdam being termed the "Venice of the North". The Westerkerk ("western church") is a Protestant church in Amsterdam, built in 1620-1631 after a design by Hendrick de Keyser. The church is right next to Amsterdam's Jordaan district, at the bank of the Prinsengracht canal.

Here's a view of the Westertoren in the winter -5 ºC december 2008, Jordaan - Amsterdam

The edges of the wide angle Sigma create a mechanical vignette when pushed. It is an engineering defect and/or benefit. Cropped a bit up and to the right to allow for the light at the bottom left to provide an exit path.

it was a cloudy and gloomy day all day and i was so bored so we decided to stop by at camden, nj. one hour into sunset and lo and behold, the sun started peeping out so we got clear skies, some fog, calm waters, and no haze - essentially the perfect conditions. little did we know that the ben franklin bridge was also quietly celebrating christmas with her own beautiful lights!

Who ever will come to the business of Käthe Wohlfahrt in Rothenburg ob der Tauber (Germany, Bavaria) during the summer might feel strange. The shop is a huge Christmas village and offers Christmas and Advent items all the year. The warm light inside is amazing and it will touch you. You may feel like a child on Christmas Eve who is waiting for his present ;-). The half-timbered houses with the Christmas tree in the middle are really lovely. You shouldn't miss this beautiful village and visit it in the Winter as well as in the Summer.

For the moment this photo will be my last one of the series from Rothenburg o.d. Tauber.

Laos has remained virtually unchanged for half a century. Rich in history and culture, Laos and its peoples, more than 47 ethnic groups, harmonize life to ancient rhythms and traditions that evoke timeless Asia. Although the trappings of the modern world are becoming increasingly visible, Laos remains the least developed country in Southeast Asia. A country where experienced travelers will appreciate breathtaking scenery and ofcourse the friendly people.

Photo taken in a small village of Ban Thieng - Laos. Enthusiastic children showing their selfmade automobiles and will be keen to try out their few words of English on you. When school is out, you may be lucky enough to see the boys playing a spectacular fast moving version of volley ball in which only the feet are allowed to touch the woven rattan ball.

Children spent the day at school, and by the afternoon they were doing the chores required of them…building a fire for the kitchen, sweeping the leaves into a pile, or caring for the young siblings strapped to their back …young boys and girls from the age of seven or eight attentive to the baby’s every need. Amongst this was the laughter of children playing in the village. Proudly showing their selfmade automobiles..

When I find myself in times of trouble

Mother Mary comes to me

Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

And in my hour of darkness

She is standing right in front of me

Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be.

Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people

Living in the world agree,

There will be an answer, let it be.

For though they may be parted there is

Still a chance that they will see

There will be an answer, let it be.

Let it be, let it be. Yeah

There will be an answer, let it be.

In the Sapa region there are about 35,000 Black Hmong residing in the surrounding 17 villages and they account for about 50% of the area population. Most reside at an altitude of 1,600 – 1,700 meters above sea level in this stunningly beautiful region they call “the city above the clouds”. The Hmong started migrating to Vietnam from China in the last 300 years.
