The mosque was built under the guidance and supervision of Sheikh Zayed, who was buried here after his death in 2004. It features 82 domes, more than 1,000 columns, 24-carat-gold gilded chandeliers and the world's largest hand-knotted carpet. The main prayer hall is dominated by one of the largest chandeliers. The mosque was designed under the management of the Syrian architect Youssef Abdelke, and three other architectural designers from Syria who completed the design and worked on developing it, Basem Barghouti, Moataz Al-Halabi, and Imad Malas.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is one of the world’s largest mosques.
The largest chandelier hangs from the dome of the central prayer hall and measures a staggering 10 meters in diameter, 15 meters in height and 9.5 tons in weight. It was made by the Germany company Faustig.
At the time of opening, it was the largest chandelier was the biggest in the world. It is still the largest known chandelier inside a mosque.
The Grand Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi was my particular highlight of my recent trip to the United Arab Emirates. The beauty of this place is breathtaking and I definitely recommend visiting it when you have the chance.

Going to see The Sheikh Zayed Mosque or Grand Mosque was the main reason to visit Abu Dhabi. After luckily having a chance to see The Mausoleum at The Taj Mahal a few years ago, I'd been googling for other such wonderful structures in countries from the 'ain't been there yet' list.
With its 82 domes and the gorgeous marble inlay throughout, The Grand Mosque was so much more spectacular than I imagined. Like a crazy tourist I battled the 47°c daytime heat to have a good (yet totally enjoyable) look around. The taxi driver reliably informed me that it was cooler on this day compared with the week before. : S
