After the mysterious Easter Island, I take you to visit one of the masterpieces of architecture, the Grand Mosque Sheikh Zayed in Abu Dhabi. We will live the magic moment of sunset, when the mosque transforms into a palace of Arabian Nights.
Zayed Mosque really speaks for itself. If you take the time to go inside you'll discover a work of art beyond belief. It's really a tribute to modern society, and will likely be considered one of the wonders of the world in the future. There's no reason it shouldn't be included among the great works of civilizations. Alternatively you could look at this as such a bastardization of wealth and brazen display of what money can do, and contemplate the amount of starving people that could have been fed with the same amount of energy contributed to a problem of humanity rather than the gods. Then again, when something as grand is built as a tribute to Allah, it's hard to find fault. Celebrating creation and being is a universal language to be appreciated and accepted by all cultures.
La mezquita Sheikh Zayed es una mezquita situada en Abu Dabi, en los Emiratos Árabes Unidos. Su nombre hace honor al primer presidente de los Emiratos Árabes Unidos, Zayed ibn Sultán Al Nahayan, que falleció en 2004. Su lugar de descanso final se encuentra en los terrenos junto a la misma mezquita. La mezquita fue construida 1996 a 20072 Es la mezquita más grande de los Emiratos Árabes Unidos y puede ser visitada por personas de otras confesiones religiosas. El complejo del edificio tiene unas dimensiones de aproximadamente 290 m y 420 m, con una superficie de más de 12 hectáreas, excluyendo los jardines exteriores y los estacionamientos de vehículos.
La mezquita cuenta con cuatro minaretes de una altura de 107 metros y con 82 bóvedas de 7 tamaños diferentes. Las bóvedas de mayor tamaño se construyeron con panales de hormigón prefabricados y fijados entre ellos, mientras que las bóvedas más pequeñas se construyeron in situ de fibra de vidrio. La bóveda más importante tiene una altura de 80 metros y un diámetro de 36 m.
El complejo tiene 1048 columnas en el exterior y 96 en el interior.
La artesanía es de alta calidad, y los motivos son de inspiración musulmana, pasando por Marruecos, Argelia y Pakistán. Para su construcción se utilizó mármol, yeso, madera y mosaicos.
Se utilizaron miles de piedras preciosas y semipreciosas para la decoración de la mezquita, especialmente incrustadas en el mármol: lapislázulis, amatistas, ónix rojo, aventurina, nácar y concha de abulón —Haliotis fulgens—, entre otras.
La sala principal tiene 10 lámparas de araña de 10 metros de longitud y de 9 toneladas de peso, a base de cobre y recubiertos de oro, fabricados en Alemania por la empresa Swarovski.
La alfombra en la sala principal es, con 5.627 m2, la alfombra más grande del mundo, pesa 47 toneladas (35 de lana y 12 algodón) y tiene 2.268.000.000 nudos. Fue hecha a mano por aproximadamente 1.200 mujeres iraníes y diseñada por el artista Ali Khaliqi. Tiene un valor estimado de 545 millones de dólares.
The Grand Mosque was constructed between 1994 and 2007 and was inaugurated in December 2007. The building complex measures approximately 290 by 420 m (950 by 1,380 ft), covering an area of more than 12 hectares (30 acres), excluding exterior landscaping and vehicle parking. The main axis of the building is rotated about 12° south of true west, aligning it in the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
The project was launched by the late president of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who wanted to establish a structure that would unite the cultural diversity of the Islamic world with the historical and modern values of architecture and art.In 2004, Sheikh Zayed died and was buried in the courtyard of the mosque.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Center (SZGMC) offices are located in the west minarets. SZGMC manages the day-to-day operations and serves as a center of learning and discovery through its educational cultural activities and visitor programs. The library, located in the northeast minaret, serves the community with classic books and publications addressing a range of Islamic subjects: sciences, civilization, calligraphy, the arts, and coins, including some rare publications. The collection comprises material in a broad range of languages, including Arabic, English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, and Korean. For two years running, it was voted the world's second favourite landmark by TripAdvisor.
At the moment it's time for "canned food" - due to the lack of new travel options, I once again searched my hard drive for unedited pictures from past trips. I came across this picture of the Sheikh Zayed Bridge in Abu Dhabi. Apparently there is a multi-colored lighting concept for this bridge - but on that evening it was simply illuminated in white - probably the reason why I have so far ignored the picture...
