If I had a do over on this trip, I would have only taken in Zion and Bryce Canyon instead of trying to do all five national parks in Utah in one trip. Too much to see and not enough time.

We did hike The Narrows but didn't take my camera for that trip.

Zion National Park is a southwest Utah nature preserve distinguished by Zion Canyon’s steep red cliffs. Zion Canyon Scenic Drive cuts through its main section, leading to forest trails along the Virgin River

Utah USA

Zion National Park is located in the Southwestern United States, near Springdale, Utah. A prominent feature of the 229-square-mile park is Zion Canyon, which is 15 miles long and up to half a mile deep, cut through the reddish and tan-colored Navajo Sandstone by the North Fork of the Virgin River.

Here is take two on the Watchman in Zion. This is my preferred comp of the two but I held off on working on this one initially for two reasons. One, my buddy Chris who was standing directly to my left here had just published an almost identical composition (pretty much unavoidable if you are going to shoot from the bridge).

Two, there are definitely times where I will delay processing my favorite composition. Sometimes a little time and perspective lets you figure out exactly where you want to go with an image. In this case, I received a test print of the last photo I posted from Zion and decided it came out a little bit too unnatural for my tastes. Despite the fact that the cliffs were really blazing away in the moonlight I felt like a slightly more subtle processing treatment captures the feel of the night better in my eyes.

Check out how much a single vehicle driving by in the distance can change a scene. In the little valley on the right you can see what the headlights from a single car driving the other direction a mile away can do to a scene. I don't feel like it detracts from the overall image here but there have been plenty of compositions ruined by seemingly trivial lights on the horizon or from passing boats, planes, trains and automobiles.

First trail to reopen after a summer storm moved through offers some terrific scenery from the valley in Zion National Park.

This is a view looking toward Zion National Park from the outback south of the park, near Rockville, UT. The big formation at upper left is Mount Kinesava. The prominent dirt road in the foreground is Smithsonian Butte Road.

This was taken from a vantage point somewhere outside Rockville, UT from near the highway. As such, I'm standing outside the park, while this natural edifice is inside it. I'm sure it has a name, but I'm not aware of it.

Driving into the park from the west (as I was here), the views are astounding. Perhaps the grandest view of all is in Springdale where you are treated to 180 degrees of colorful, towering bluffs--a scene no photograph could adequately capture.

Does the Zion Narrows hike live up to the hype? Hell yeah! Awesome views of the slot canyon and all the while wading in cool waters of the Virgin river. Explore as far as you dare to go!

I have been to Zion a couple of years back from Vegas. This time, I drove to Zion from Bryce through UT-9. It's an absolutely gorgeous scenic route. After entering Zion NP, the roads goes through a few tunnels and descends about 2000 ft along many hairpin turns. This is at the bottom of the valley within the park on UT-9. The water is from Pine creek, which will soar in spring. Could not see any birds but here's a birds eye (instead of fisheye) view :) under the bridge looking at "East Temple."

Spectacular Zion national park in Autumn. Will have to miss it this year due to the pandemic. Here’s hoping for next year.

Zion National Park was the second stop on my recent roadtrip. It's really an amazing place, and the Angel's Landing hike is one of my all-time favorites. But I'd never hiked into the Narrows before, despite hearing great things about it. Basically the hike takes you along a stretch of the Virgin River that curves through cliff walls so narrow in many areas that you have to walk through the water.

What a cool hike - even better than I expected. The only downside was the crowd. I started early enough that there were only a few others around, but by mid-afternoon people were all over, even a good distance up the river.

The classic Zion National Park view of the Virgin River and "The Watchman" - Though it is a well worn vantage point and photographed location, I had one afternoon and sunset to make a call of what to shoot and this was kind of the easy winner, just too good to pass up. I will return some day with more time and options to explore some of the less photographed areas of the park. Enjoy.

This is probably the last shot from the Narrows that I have to upload, from my trip in June to Zion National Park, Utah. Every step on this hike is another opportunity for a great picture. The Wallstreet section of the hike, shown here, was the most scenic part of the hike: the most scenic park in Utah, in the most scenic hike in the park, and the most scenic part of the hike! Now that's pretty impressive! I'm trying to plan another trip out to Utah in the middle of March, when I have some time off. I'm for sure planning on Zion again, and also doing some backpacking in the Needles district of Canyonlands NP. It's always a dramatic change to go from the wet, humid deciduous forests of the southeast to the deserts of the southwest. Has anyone ever done Capitol Reef before? I've never done any photography there, only driven through.

I thought for my last photo of the trip I'd pick something iconic to Zion. Best part of all was that it was *only* about 45 degrees out. All I needed was a down jacket and gloves-after Capitol Reef that felt like summer! This was light painted from the left and below to create shadows and textures, and that's the Milky Way behind the rock. It's been a wonderful trip, hope you enjoyed the photos as much as I enjoyed taking them.

Stormy sunset behind the Towers of the Virgin section of Zion National Park

On Day Six we hiked Zion National Park.

It was a hot day said to reach 99 degrees so my parents did not join us on the hike. They sat in the shade in Zion Lodge while we sweated our way to Lower Emerald Pool and back. This photo was taken on that trail.

I loved the contrast of green trees against a red rock background. It was my favorite part of Zion.

This was a hike into an untouched portion of Zion NP, after about an hour no signs of human presence. However tracing our footsteps back we noticed some real big cat foot prints on top of our shoe prints, we were not alone after all!

Tunnel of light in the Zion Narrows.

Zion Narrows is one of the most popular hikes in Zion National Park. There are a couple of outdoor adventure outfits that in Springdale that rent gear for the hike, including water shoes, neoprene socks, dry pants and a helpful walking stick.

The hike is a lot of fun and offers some great photo opportunities. Definitely worth doing if you happen to be there.

After launching my new time lapse video "Into The Night".

Finally get into processing some of those time lapse into startrails photography. This one taken from Zion National Park on a moonlit night back in April, 2014.

The final sequence consists of over 600 frames. I took out 200+ frames with clear sky, cloned out all the airplane in the sequence then process them into startrails. Bring it back into Photoshop and did all the final adjustments. Hope you like it!
