Alright, I'll throw in a photo in honor of Amtrak's 50th birthday. For most of my 20 years (give or take) in the hobby of railroad photography, Amtrak was usually an afterthought. Like many of you, I always preferred shooting freight. However, I have fond memories of my dad taking me by Albany-Rensselaer station as a kid where I was able to both see and hear Amtrak's FL9s. There's no doubt that Amtrak's P32s are nowhere near as cool or attractive looking as their FL9s were, but when Amtrak started repainting most of their fleet of P32s into an "Empire Service" version of the Phase III scheme the FL9s wore, my interest was piqued. Since then, I've slowly but surely made more of an effort to photograph these engines. One such opportunity was on April 18, 2017. I was on my way home from a very successful day of chasing the NYS&W's UT-1 job when I decided to stop in Little Falls to shoot a couple trains. Amtrak Train 283 came through in its usual late afternoon window, making for this shot. I know I'm probably in the minority, but I'd take an engine in this scheme over a dirty CSX GE in YN3 paint any day...
Not the shot I was really hoping for, but because of the CP's lack of brush control the spots I had in mind were no-go's. And it's February for cripes sake.
On to the photo, Conrail heritage leads CP 853 up the River with it's class lights intact and its Flexis flexin'. It was soon yet another overcast day, but at least the sun held out long enough for one. Thanks again DK.
As I show up to my favorite spot in South Norfolk being Berkeley yard. I find 5113 doing some yardwork with a bunch of CSX power to boot. I finally decided that today was the day I was going to do a risky shot that I’ve always wanted. Once I saw that 5113 had backed into the yard I quickly got in my car and headed up on 464. I waited about five minutes, jumped on the interstate And put my hazards on and with only seconds to spare 5113 pulls up for a gorgeous shot of an overview of the east end of the yard.
With a rare CSX SD60I leading, southbound grain train GLRBE3 off of the Canadian Pacific passes by the grain elevator at Bongard on the UP Villa Grove Subdivision.
Rolling through the Countryside of rural Ohio we see CSXT Q350 making its trek north from Cincinnati. Seen here just south of Leipsic, OH.
Train Q394-22 limps along on Track 4 by the Youghiogheny River after struggling with M.U. cable problems. They only moved four miles in a few hours, and after calling CSX Mechanical in Jacksonville, the problem still never really got solved. They ran out of hours and the train got left on this track.
M215 going west through the small borough of Dawson, Pennsylvania. The C40-8W is a bit of a rarity on CSX now. Many have either been rebuilt to CM44's or retired. It was built as LMS 711 in October 1994. LMS was Conrail's own special locomotive leasing service with General Electric. On the right side of this photo, the former Chubboy's Tavern and Phil's Night Club once occupied the lot. It burned down on May 18th, 2018 and was never rebuilt.
I admit to liking Big Macs, usually with no lettuce and easy sauce, so this SD70MAC sitting in the siding at Dyer will do just fine. It's wrapped in YN3 but that's OK, If I want a Big Mac to eat, there's a McDonalds about a half mile down the street. This one is just fine to look at as it rests with a tie train on CSX's Monon sub about three years ago. All I need to complete the scene is a large order of fries...
An SD40-2 and a C40-8W, for years the mainstays of CSX freight power, work hard as they lead Q324 east through Albion on a sunny fall morning. #8408 was built as C&O SD40 #7457 in 1966.

The "Spirit of Grafton", CW44AC number 500, leads a matched set of three YN3 CW44s as it wakes up the hamlet of Castleberry, Alabama, blasting northward with train M602. It's late March, and the trees are just beginning to get their color back after a chilly winter.
Q138-22 coming east through Connellsville about 5 hours behind the regular schedule. So far the new grand "Precision Railroading" plan is not that impressive.
CP 286 passes the Miller Brewery as it enters the start of the C&M Subdivision with a heritage unit SD70ACU and CSX YN3 GEVO. The font of the heritage unit and the Miller sign on the brewery have a very similar look as well.
A duo of YN3 painted AC4400's bring SCWX loads southbound through the control point at North (West) Marrowbone siding, still guarded by C&O R2's.
It seems LTEX has adopted a new boxcar logo. Or perhaps there's a clear heritage to the Class I that sold off this SD50.

Chase of the U738-11 ( Calera, AL - Corbin, KY) with a pair of brand new YN3 CM44s. First run for these bad boys, and I have no complaints!
Csx 1 leads Q350-19 north under golden light off the sunset. No matter how many times I get Q350 at the same spot at the same time, it doesn’t get old or disappoint.

Y193 (CSX 2755 and 9249) and Y103 (CSX 2801 and an unidentified second Geep) go about their work at the east end of CSX's Wyoming Yard. In the distance, X500 awaits a new crew in track E02.
CSX coal bucket N302 is sliding down the mountain under full dynamics with the empty coal train bound for Evansville, IN. CSXT N302 is led by a CSX SD70AC (SD70MAC) 4532 and two other GE variation locomotives take the empty coal bucket northbound.
Autorack train Q276-07 rumbles into Connellsville with a pair of SD40-2's getting it done. This train is so long that it almost always gets cut into two trains in Connellsville because it is too big to take into the mountains. Since the retirement of the GE C40-8's I have pleasantly noticed more SD40-2's being used on CSX trains again.
CSX loaded oil train K140 approaches Township Line Rd and CP TL westbound on the Trenton Sub behind a trio of GEs, led by a standard cab Dash 8.
Grafton and Upton MP15AC #1158 and GMTX MP15AC #326 pull a heavy train of hazmat for West Upton through Robindale Farm on a beautiful spring morning. G&U #1158 is the third locomotive on the roster getting fresh paint. Currently, the locomotive is in the shop undergoing prep work for it.
Fun fact about the 1158: on the engineers side, at the right angle, you could still see the outline of the Seaboard “Family Lines” livery this used to wear when it was built new for the railroad in 1977 as SCL #4008. Seems hard to believe as it was underneath a coat of CSX YN2 and YN3 paint but trust me, it was there. I doubt it will be visible once it's repainted into the G&U's new corporate scheme

F715-28 is seen here crossing a dried out portion of Contentnea Creek with a gorgeous ex SCL GP38-2 on point. I have a soft spot for nose headlight YN3 EMDs if you couldn't tell. Even more fitting, this is former ACL/SCL trackage, so this unit is right at home.

Times were simpler, light was golden, and cabs were standard. A southbound autorack train comes into Bowling Green with a YN3 C40-8 standard cab leading the way. While not the best shot, the power is unbeatable. I miss these things...
Time for a roster shot, I'm picking this classic B&O GP40, the 4001. Looking good in Royal Blue with the Capitol Dome on the nose as the railroad gods intended, she would go on to get the wild Chessie Paint, then the CSX schemes. The 4001 has been neutered and is now a road slug with a different number, and she wears YN3 paint. But she's still working and still kind of looks like herself. But she'll never look better than she did here. Barr Yard, Riverdale, IL
Q321 is finally rolling south again after signal issues with the CN diamond at Kearsley. An SD60I leads an SD50-3 and a GP38-2 as they pass the concrete milepost at 34 on the Saginaw Sub. Today, this part of the line is single track and operated by the LSRC.

CSX 3203 and 835 are greeted by a pair of happy jack-o-lanterns as they bring a loaded coal train to a stop in Connellsville. The story behind the pumpkins is I got onto the other side of this abandoned N&W-P&WV bridge and came across two freshly carved pumpkins sitting on a bridge beam. So I knew I had two ready-made photo props, and I carried the pumpkins to the other end of this bridge and hoped a train would come. It was a one and done deal because this train sat stopped on Track 2 most of the day. So thanks to whoever left the pumpkins on the bridge! Update: There are long term plans to renovate this long-dormant bridge into a scenic bike / pedestrian overlook park that will connect with the Great Allegheny Passage. It will be called the Iron Horse Bridge Park.
CSX 7724 leads Q363 west as it splits the former Conrail trilights at QI153, right in the heart of Quincy, OH. The consist in tow was killer, well worth the hour drive to catch it. Consist was:

Summer weather has stepped into view and it’s shown here with X370 rounding the bend into Collier yard here in Petersburg, Virginia.
As J783-13 pulls out a line of cars from Needmore yard to put on their train I went to scope out my next spot. Once I found it I walk up and wait from the train, next thing I know I look over at a Dayton Police officer staring at me with his binoculars. So I decided it was time to leave. He then followed me for 5 miles until he finally turned off. It was quite an experience to say the least

December 13, 2014: An EMD SD50-2 standard cab engine in YN3 paint leads a pair of GE AC4400CW engines in YN2 paint, as they bring loaded Grain Train CSX G129 Southbound over the old Western & Atlantic tracks by the county landfill in Emerson, GA.
SD40-3 and SD50-2 combination pulling hard and very well on freight train Q394-10, at the classic railfanning location of Sand Patch in Somerset County, PA. Conveniently the train was running on Track 1 which made for a better photograph. CSX 4234 was recently rebuilt and is a former Conrail.

January 20, 2018: An EMD SD70MAC in YN3 paint leads empty coal train CSX E321 (Cross, SC-Evansville, IN) through the Lakepoint S curve at Emerson, GA on the CSX Western & Atlantic Subdivision. Sadly, a new overpass bridge is now being constructed, thus taking away this scenic wooded view.
A NRE 2GS14B, number SPAX 70, sits just East of Woodbourne Yard. There was a problem with the signal at CP Woodobourne, so this train, CSXT X980, and the C770 were held on the main until the problem was fixed.
A CSXT YN3 Dash 9 is the one and only unit for BNSF train U-OKCEOC0-01T moving north up Track 81 of the KCT North-South Corridor past the historic Kansas City Live Stock Exchange building in the West Bottoms. They'll be leaving town via the BNSF Brookfield Sub today.
This is one of CSX's original 53 early production Dash 9's, built with Dash 8 carbodies and GSC FB-3 trucks. 6/8/25.
