CSX job Y106 emerges from the building at Haviland Chemical, after spotting a couple of tank cars for unloading. Getting cars to the dock at Haviland involves opening a gate, an overhead door, and raising a drawbridge inside. While this work is now done by second shift job Y297, during this time CSX had Y106 venturing to the north side of Grand Rapids. #2654 still has its cab-mounted "Master Blaster" in this June 2007 view.

Bound for Valdosta, GA, this unit grain train sports a nice surprise in the form of a former CR SD50 complete with its marker lights intact.

Coal loads from Balkan, KY trundle south through Singleton, TN.

For quite a long time, Grand Rapids-Toledo freight Q334 always left the former in the evening. While the light for this east-bound usually sucked by that time of day, there were a few spots in town where one could find somewhat favorable sub. The GR Terminal Sub runs north-south along Buchanann Ave for close to a mile, and it was always a good show as the trains would be really digging into the grade leaving town. An SD50-2 and a C40-8 are shown pulling for all of their clapped-out worth with 334 on a warm July evening back in 2012.

CP 470 wraps around the frost covered landscape on the last leg of its overnight journey from Tracy, MN to Waseca, MN. CSXT 8236, a familiar face to this photographer, has the honors on this sunny Minnesota morning. A very nice start to 2013 for me.

Q326 rounds the curve just east of Fox behind an SD50-2 and a Hlem Leasing SD40-2.

A pair of CSX GE's (C40-8W, ES44AH) power a Northbound string of empty ethanol tanker cars across the Etowah River near Cartersville, GA on the CSX W&A Subdivision. I checked my records, and the last time I caught the lead engine was in December of 2006, and then it was in the YN2 paint scheme that I hate to see vanish.

CSX SD70AC 4758 leads Q576 through Memphis Junction.

A pair of former Conrail Flexi's notch it up at Fountain City with racks bound for Laurel, MT. With the SD50-3 program, the leader lost most of its lineage tells, but the trucks remain. Quite the pair.

Were the words I uttered after Q616 passed me with this trio of GP38-2's, a YN2 leading, an ex-NS from FURX, and a YN3 trailing third. The power shortage was still in full swing clearly, and I was not complaining as the three EMD's were notched up passing me in Statham, GA.

A still relatively shiny and clean rebuilt flared SD70MAC leads CSX M565 through Willow Creek on a moody early winter morning.

While some miss the "powder blue" these used to wear, I am perfectly fine with some brand new shiny YN3 EMDs running around.

Jacksonville is known for many bridges, but not all are as often documented as the spectacular drawbridge downtown or McGirts Creek. On the Kingsland Sub in the direction of the Dames Point and Blount Island Spurs, a long wooden trestle with its own charm permits passage across Dunn Creek. Although various photogenic perspectives exist, the incredibly sporadic and largely unpredictable traffic on this section have kept me away from here despite having spent over 10 years railfanning Jacksonville.

Throughout November-December 2025, a massive amount of military equipment arrived by ship at both the Blount island marine terminal and the port by Dames Point- meaning both spurs (which this line separates into) would see several special moves in this regard. For the last set of equipment to be moved, CSX would stage SD70MAC 4535 and an AC44CW at ICTF (Dames Point), utilizing the power for daily switch moves within the facility. On December 6th, the day's special move running as S898-06 would break away briefly from the military switching to take a long cut of mixed freight and intermodal to Kraft Yard. The rare move was finally captured at Dunn Creek.

A pair of SD40-2s are working on hard the old B&O as they lug Q386 east through Albion on a clear November morning in 2011.

Snow On The Scioto. CSX GP40WH-2 9969 (ex-MARC 69, née-New York Central Railroad 3051, GP40, EMD, 7/1967) led CSX W003 over the Scioto River in Columbus, Ohio on February 2, 2021 with CSX "Hocking Valley" 994365 and "Track Geometry Car 3" 994366. These cars travel the CSX system inspecting track standards, and have since been repainted into CSX's new Baltimore and Ohio Railroad tribute paint schemes, although the locomotive still wears the CSX YN3/"Box Car" livery. Notable in the background are the Main Street Bridge, which was designed by professor of design technology and management at the Harvard University Graduate School Dr. Spiro Pollalis and opened in 2010, as well as the Rhodes State Office Tower and Leveque Tower, respectively the tallest and 2nd tallest buildings in Columbus.

CSXT 4765 leads B431-03 by the searchlight signals at Spring Lake, KY. The pair of fresh SD70MAC rebuilds were released from Huntington, WV on May 30th, and the stone train turn from Russell, KY to Mount Vernon, KY is their first revenue service run.

October 6, 2021: CSX manifest-freight train Q542 (Waycross, GA-Cincinnati, OH) passes over the Etowah River on the CSX W&A Subdivision at Cartersville, GA with a hefty dose of power, lead by an SD70MAC EMD in newly painted YN3 paint, along with an ES40DC GE, Road slug, GP40-2 EMD, and GP38-2 EMD.

X542 creeps past the signals at South Binfield, preparing to stop due to a large pine tree felled across the tracks just behind me.

CSX L368-20 taking the siding at West Skillman to enter the yard and tie the train down. L368, the Skillman - Evansville turn, dogged in Evansville the night before and the L400 crew taxied up to Howell Yard to drag the train back onto the Texas. L400-21 left Howell with CSX SD40-2 8051, GP40-2 4420, and GP40-2 6468, but dropped 4420 at Owensboro with a large cut of cars. The SD40-2 was a nice touch, although the nose is looking rough these days.

Pacific National's NR97, NR105 & NR113 lead steel service 4YN2 from Whyalla, SA to Morandoo, NSW. Seen rising up the grade through Jindalee.

An awesome lash-up, consisting of a pair of B20-8s and three SD40-2s, with a mix of YN3 and YN2 liveries, power out of Rice yard on this dreary Friday morning. Today's A768 consists of a pole car for Ace Pole and chips, tanks, and a boxcar for the Rayonier paper mill in Jesup, Ga. Engines are CSXT 5938, 5944, 8059 (I believe), 8239, and 8130.

CSX Q275 departs Memphis Junction after picking up their daily cut for Nashville including cars transferred from RJ Corman. A pair of standard cab C40-8's lead the train, my favorite locomotives of all time. Brings back good memories...

After meeting a north-bound grain empty, a pair of CW44ACs continue south toward Atlanta with a rack train.

Y106 crests the grade at Fox on a cold but snow-less December day in 2006. GP38-2 #2689 was one of the last YN1 units left on the system at that point, and was one of very few that went directly from YN1 to YN3 paint.

I'm openly not a fan of CSX Yn3 or the looks of the SD40-3s. And I'm less of a fan shooting stuff in thick clouds.

But, that said, it is a foreign SD40 leading an oil train, so while it's not ideal, I figured I might as well take the shot.

September 6, 2020: A pair of CSX GE wide cab engines (ES44AH YN3, AC4400CW YN2) pull loaded coal train CSX N904 (Evansville, IN-Cross, SC) over a kudzu covered high fill on the old Western & Atlantic Subdivision at Emerson, GA.

Some power mingles outside of the Grand Rapids locomotive shop in September of 2014. At the time, SD40-2 #8356 (originally a Clinchfield SD40) was one of a very small number of EMDs still wearing the classic YN2 paint scheme. Two years later, CSX would shut down the shop here, and the tracks these units are sitting on have since been removed.

Digging through the archives.....Shortly after the rainbow shot CSX K458 accelerates out of Hull Siding with one of the cleanest YN3 SD50's I have ever seen.

An unbelievable lash-up of YN2 B40-8 5956, YN2 GP38-2 2756, two YN3 Dash 8 widecabs, and a YN3 Geep make up the power for Q473 as they sit at Busch yard ready to head to Waycross, Ga.

A good amount of CSX locomotives' sits around the Cumberland turntable awaiting their turn for servicing.

October 6, 2021: CSX manifest-freight train Q542 (Waycross, GA-Cincinnati, OH) motors around the fill by a heavily kudzu covered field at the river holdout in Cartersville, GA on the CSX W&A Subdivision. The train is creeping to a stop here, where it would sit for a short while to allow a local switch job to clear up at Junta Yard. This run featured a newly rebuilt EMD SD70MAC in new paint, with a return to the YN3 logo.

CSX J759 traverses the rollercoaster track profile along the Glasgow Branch with empty scrap cars for Midstate at Glasgow.

C090 rolls railroad south on the Cumberland Valley near Ocoonita, VA with loads for Eastman.

A former Conrail SD50 now demoted to the low rank of ballast train service leads a SD40-2 on W067 as it drifts down the main in Palmetto, Georgia along the A&WP/WofA Subdivision. Many times when traffic peaked the 2400s would get thrown to the wolves at the power desk for their old road assignments. Most of us would just take them in whatever fashion they came, even after most were repainted into the hideous YN3 scheme. August 25, 2011

CSX M415 makes its way out of Virginia and into North Carolina at Forest Road with a very nice lash up including 1776 leading the way to Rocky Mount.

CSX 837 and two other GEs creep along as mine run R231 loads the first half of a SCWX coal train near Vicco, Kentucky on the Carrs Fork Branch.

April 10, 2018: A GP38-2 EMD engine brings local yard job CSX Y220 by the Milepost OWA 47.32 at Cartersville, GA on the CSX W&A Subdivision in Cartersville, GA. The train had been working a chemical plant on the South side of town, and is now headed back to North Yard.

The now-abolished Q665 (Rocky Mount, NC - Atlanta, GA) rolls through Waxhaw, NC on a crystal clear afternoon. The SD50 is now repainted into YN3, and the C40-8 has been retired from the CSX roster.

R581 arrives at Lynch 3 with empties from Loyall.

Running around the train after spotting up at the loader.

Eastern coal loads N904 are rolling down E02 track with a train of 90 Bethgons for the JH Campbell generating plant in West Olive. There's not a GE in sight as the coal train's pair of SD70MACs pass inbound Q335's pair of SD40-2s, which were tied down after cutting away from their train in E06 due to their crew being short on HOS. The tracks here are, from right to left: the NYC Transfer (since removed), Service, Main, E02, E04, E06, and E08. E02 was the perfect parking spot for these eastern coal trains waiting to head to the plant, being able to just hold a pair of engines and 90 cars.

3 YN3 SD40-2's roll around the southeast wye in Deshler passing the CPL at "Reservoir" Starting their train south down the B&O

This morning I got a tip from a friend that a crew for a loaded sand train was on duty in Brewster, but I didn't know the power. Set up for my shot in Bolivar, I was a bit surprised to see CSX power round the corner, let alone five units all in the YN3 scheme. They made good time, allowing for several frigid shots this morning despite a small delay with trying to get ahold of the new OC St Albans dispatcher.

Consist was CSX 4710, 5485, 7370, 4570, 8094. 85 loads for Warrenton.

Detroit-Grand Rapids freight Q327 has an SD40-2 fresh out of the paint booth for a leader as the train descends the hill at Fox on a sunny evening in April.
