CSX Q582 heads north for Wheland, where the crew will park the train & get on the shuttle to Wauhatchie. In a surprise move to railfans a month earlier in August, CSX decided to go back to the YN3 paint scheme, now sporting the company website name under the logo, to use on their locomotives, with SD70MAC rebuilds 4532 & 4535 being the first 2 to get the revived scheme (without the website, making them a bit more unique) & Wabtec rebuild 7254 being the last to receive the YN3b scheme that had been used since 2013. Here, we see the 4532 leading Q582, with the 4535 acting as a mid-train DPU not far behind. I'll miss the YN3b scheme since I preferred it over the YN3 scheme, but I'll admit that fresh YN3 looks really good. 9-12-21
This is CSX Y102 in Columbia, South Carolina about to go to work after allowing a coal train to pass in front of it first. CSXT 6455 is an EMD GP40-2 built for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad in 1981. CSX initially numbered it CSXT 6339 but renumbered it into the range that denotes it is a mother coupled to the slug behind it. The lighting dictated a head on shot here, so the slug is unseen.
The engine upfront was smoking it up in honor of 4/20.
In a move you'd be more likely to find on a model railway, CSX 12 -The Spirit of Louisville pulls two flatcars loaded with various military trucks and equipment across Dunn Creek in Jacksonville, FL- seen from the I295 overpass. CSX 12 stuck around the ICTF Dames Point facility for several days with occasional runs to Kraft Yard to stage outbound loaded flats for Walthourville, GA. These were generally full cuts, but these two flats were the last remaining loads for a pending S130 the following day, which made for the dinky train with a nice reflection present this evening as well.
CSX W026 roads south under the coaling tower at Lebanon Junction with a trio of SD40-2's leading the way.
The only scheduled double-stack train left on the Chattanooga Sub (well, southbound anyways) pulls down track 2 at Sherwood, TN for a meet with V346.
December has arrived, meaning we're nearing the end of 2020, though the madness might continue for some time.
But, lower "winter" sun makes for a brilliant blue sky, just need something good to go with it.
Enter U-CXZEFV0-58T, an empty crude oil train headed west to fill up, led by a trio of CSX GEs.
Usually, I'm not a fan of the Yn3 & Yn3b CSX scheme, even in sunlight as it ages bad and just doesn't look that good, (Yn2 all the way), however, a clean rebuilt isn't all that bad.
Almost missed this one but I got the shot.
CSXT 7220 - GE CM44AH (AC44CWM)
CSXT 5378 - GE ES40DC
CSXT 5372 - GE ES40DC
CSX 7924 leads 2 other C40-8Ws on Q231, bound for the LCL and Louisville, KY. As older locomotives retire in favor for newer power, this triplet of GE's made a very welcome appearance. In the background is the Mother of God Roman Catholic Church in Covington, probably the most photographed church in the Cincinnati area.
Chase of the U738-11 ( Calera, AL - Corbin, KY) with a pair of brand new YN3 CM44s. First run for these bad boys, and I have no complaints!
The class unit of the CSX Tier 4 EMD SD70AHs heads the G-CSXMCO4-01A as it flies into Big Lake at track speed.
It was a shocker to learn a CSX "ST70AH" was on the way, and leading no less. A pair of Tier 4 GEs trail behind.
Still not much of a CSXT Yn3(b) fan (Yn2 is the best), but I can't pass a chance to see a CSX ACe.
This is only my third TIer 4 EMD I've shot, wish BNSF would've bought a whole bunch.
This time I had this spot all to myself (except for a whole bunch of gnats), and got the angle I was looking for without having to do some photoshop magic.
Crew was friendly too, always a bonus.
CSXT 8521 jogs down towards the tunnel to swap crews. The slow moving haze/cloud combination was looking like imminent screwage, but every so often you luck out. Thank goodness today was one of those times, right Plant? You like 50's..
A late running CSXT train M264 (Selkirk to East Brookfield loaded unit auto rack) is getting on the move eastbound on the controlled siding near the east end of Palmer Yard near MP 82.2 on the Boston Sub after being run around by both I022 and M436. Leading the train is spotless eighteen year old ES40DC 5435 which is fresh out of the Waycross paint booth in new YN3 paint.

During the historic flooding of April 2013, CSX's Wyoming Yard became threatened by the Grand River, which was expected to crest higher than its highest ever recorded point in over 100 years. As the water began to creep in to the north side of the yard, CSX decided it would be prudent to move all of the locomotives out. With most of the regularly scheduled trains not running, they scraped together all of the power that was in Wyoming, along with some freight, and sent it west on Q327. On the first sunny day we had had in what seemed like forever, I ran out to shoot this motely train as it made its way west along Chicago Drive. C40-8 #7557 is seen leading UP GP60 #2025, a pair of RCPHG4 drones, and a pair of GP38-2s. CSX had about 20 UP GP60s on loan from UP at the time as horsepower hour payback units. While the GP38-2s and drones were dropped at Waverly Yard in Holland, I'm not sure if the GP60 continued on to Chicago or not.
Y106 has recrewed Q326 and is bringing the train through Lamar at the west end of Wyoming Yard. Trailing the SD50-2 and CW44AC is a rare ex Conrail SD80MAC.

Before it was "cool", and most people did not give it a second thought, CSX could be found putting on a good show on the Saginaw Sub.
Here Q32222 heads southbound uphill out of the Flint River valley at Atwood Wye with CSXT 8746 in the lead though Burton, Mi.
Most everything here is changed or gone, #2 main was pulled years ago, the CSX SD60I, is gone. CSX it's self is gone from the picture, along with many years before the booming auto industry in the surrounding area. Today the line is part of the Lake State Railway, and is now the "cool" thing to do.
Two out of three ain't bad!
A pair of flexicoil EMD's mow through Fostoria with 108 coal empties bound for Russell, KY. Seeing a unit coal train, albeit empty, with this pair was pretty damn cool. Over the yearly visits to Ohio I have neglected the C&O south of Fostoria, and after making a small scouting run this time, I think it's a must to get some more of this stretch before the signals go. But for now, this will have to do.
A pair of Chessie System SD40's (B&O 7593 and C&O 7509, now CSX 8435 and 8368) lead loaded rail train W022 through South Tunnel.
Crossing over from Main Track 2 to Main Track 5 of the BNSF Emporia Sub at Morris is BNSF train U-OKCEOC0-01T with a CSXT YN3 C40-9W as the one and only unit. This is one of CSX's original 53 early production Dash 9's, built with Dash 8 carbodies and GSC FB-3 trucks. 6/8/25.
A splendid Q262 (Collinwood-Selkirk) pulls down to Harlem Road to start their setout and pickup for the outbound in Buffalo.
Q301 after a quick stop and swap in Acca heads southbound on the A-line on a cloudless fall afternoon in central Virginia
The Pickens Anderson job rolls out for the day, with several industries and an interchange with NS ahead of them. The single hopper in tow sat by the engine shops overnight. Also, for those interested, the pickens recently received four ex-CSX B40-8 units, three of which were in YN3 or YN3b paint, and one in YN2. I was informed by an employee that the unit in YN2 was already sold and off the property again, while the other three are generally only used if necessary for a heavy train. The U-boats are otherwise preferred.

Csx 9032 is one of few or the only one running out of the Dash 8’s or 9’s in Csx’s fleet. Today it was leading Q157 showing that it can still do what it was built to do.

Csx 366 was once the Chessie System emblem which the unit burnt up in a tunnel in Pennsylvania. It’s since been repaired and repainted without the emblem reapplied. On the 19th it was leading Q506-18 on the north side of the Toledo Sub.

Q30515 sits in the south yard at Conrail Livernois Yard in Detroit, MI., with CSXT 2260, 6947 & a SD40-2 as they wait for the conductor to air test the cars they are picking up to take back to Walbridge, OH
Rear helpers on eastbound coal train N785 at Indian Creek. Note how badly the paint is coming off on the aluminum coal gondola. At least it won't rust!
CSX's Midland Local, known as the J725, traverses over jointed rail north of Paris on the old Conrail Danville Secondary. It's taking 8 cars north towards Chrisman, dropping one and picking up 12 loads at Horace. It'll return back to Paris with 9 cars.
The engineer said that he expects Watco to take over the line in September, so get your shots while you can!
With sand flying from the four locomotives, Q334 works east through Elmdale, the top of the grade out of the Thornapple River valley. The junction with old "Turkey Trail" line to Greenville and Saginaw is in the foreground, now just a few pieces of rail.

Q542 heads north at Fairy & by the Appalachian Inland Port with SD70MAC 4535, one of the first two engines to get the revived YN3 scheme, on the point. 10-6-21
L394 is restarting in Connellsville after a brief crew change, with lots of smoke being created by the second engine in line, which is a C40-8W. Ironically it was making more smoke than the older SD40-2 in front. The landscape here is looking very lush green right after some heavy rains.
New Years Even 2009...Conrail OI-11 pulls out of Port Reading Yard after dropping a large cut of ethanol loads. This transfer job from Oak Island to Browns Yard has carried many symbols over the years, and it was often a haven for former Erie Lackawanna SD45-2s. I always thought 8886 looked better in YN2 paint versus YN3.

On a cold and chilly day, the warmth of the Marion Union Station is a welcome brake from the cold. Outside CSX H79210 heads back south out of Marion, OH., past the window of the operators office and his old microphone as they head home.
For those who have never been there, Marion Union Station hosts quite a display of signals and old gone tower interlocking boards plus the restored AC tower.
I wouldn't call it a good picture, but 13 years later, I'm glad to have it! At the time, CSX GP38-2 #2667 was the last locomotive on the roster in Seaboard System paint, SD40 #4601 having been retired a few months prior. 2667 is seen here leading D709 east through Trowbridge on a gloomy day. A couple of years later it was finally repainted into CSX's YN3 scheme.

A CSX local, powered by an SD40-2 and a YN2 Geep creeps towards Woodbourne Rd in the midst of some jungle-like vegitation as the sunbeams through the trees light up the exhaust of the old EMD.
An SD50-2 (Former CR 6741 ) leading on autorack train Q296-31 makes for a nice start to the new year in Connellsville.

CSXT 2200 began life as B&O GP35 #3544. As the first "RDMT" churned out, it was outshopped when CSX was still in their "blue bottom" phase. The rest of the slugs came out in the all-gray "stealth" scheme. 2200 was the only RDMT in this paint scheme and made it a neat catch, It lasted in this scheme until being YN3'd in the mid 2000s. Here is the engine at Fulton Yard in Richmond Va on June 10th 1991. Doug Boyd photo, JL Sessa collection.
The C201 “CV Pusher” power idling in the yard at Loyall on a chilly winter morning gives us the chance to get up close and personal with CW44AH # 5112, still wearing it’s as delivered YN3 paint from 2002.
In just a few minutes they’d run down to Glidden and team up with another pair of CW44’s to muscle 90 loads from Creech - Eastman bound coal toward Kingsport.
