For some inexplicable reason, Will Vale had shown an interest in seeing the horrors of my workspace so, out of some masochistic tendency, I've decided to post some shots of the hole I work in.
This is in a spare room and 'theoretically' there are two separate desks, one for building and one for paint though, by the end of a build, any notions of separation (or tidiness) have long gone.
At some point in time and space the room was vaguely tidy but non now remain who remember such times.
Only You Can Figure It Out
Today I brought a young visiting couple from Shanghai to see my version of the world in this tiny little city of Hong Kong. They were not looking for comfort, they were not rushing, they were curious. So I had the freedom to show them around not worrying too much whether they like it or not. Imagine you had those young minds regardless of your age, you will have no shortage of teachers.
I was hauling 3 analogue cameras trying to spend all the films left in them, it was great fun, plain shooting at anything as I pleased. At the back of my mind, there was this phone call from Mom being nervous about Dad's condition, whom called my name in bed with huge discomforts in the afternoon. On my left shoulder, a camera bag from Korea I was testing, compact and light at relatively low price. Bringing friends to shops I know, chatting with owners and telling stories, finding pleasures in every turn of events. Finding tiny pleasures while I can, that's probably the single most important constant I can find in life.
Don't look down at them tiny pleasures, they always show you something beautiful. When you taste that delicious feedback loop, you will never quit. No matter how bad a trade show would look, I keep walking, and walking and telling myself "that's not it!" until I found something interesting or somebody worth chatting to. Next week it is going to be a Taiwan trip, let's see what whom I'll meet or what I'll find.
The secret of a balanced life? There is no balanced life I figured, there is just constants, which ones you hold onto, it is just up to you. Again, City Slickers quote "just one thing, you stick to it and the rest don't mean shit… that's what you have to find out."
A short time to regroup your thinking (Feb, Tokyo)
A beam of warm sunlight and fresh air from outside of an airport (Feb, Tokyo)
A burst of inspirations from objects (Feb, Tokyo)
A sense of peace at your desk (Feb, Hong Kong)
A glimpse of people's lives from photos (Feb, Tokyo)
That's all. Tiny pleasures.

The Vika Alex cabinet forms one table support and also houses the CPU, modem and router. Although it has some ventilation I often keep the door open to avoid any heat buildup. Im thinking about putting in active ventilation. Notice the footswitch on the floor which controls the two main lamps and the LED strip lighting.

I bought a new computer as the old one was from 2007 and despite some upgrades was really reaching the end of its lifecycle. During installation of the new rig I also cleaned up my workspace (not exactly the first time since 2007 but you get the picture). I thought I take a shot of it. Next time it will be cleaned up might as well be 2021 (and by then tiny flying drone robots will hopefully do it).
The aluminum canisters are great to see my beads but they are not screw top so spill on a regular basis. I need to come up with a better solution. I however am more willing to spend money on more beads than to fix the problem.
The great thing about knitting is it's portability - on a sunny day in the garden this is my workspace!
My upstairs collaging space.
Mandy - an even cleaner workspace just for you. :) I had to clean up because putting up the shelves made a mess of dust and drywall pieces all over the place. Oops, I think I'm going in the wrong direction!
Another Workspace Wednesday!
The shoes I ordered for the Dasia girls were too small, unfortunately, even after measuring their feet =_=. So, I’m delving into making some simple pumps for them. I carved the heels out of Super Sculpey and blasted them with a heat gun. They still need a coat of paint. The sole/insoles are made out of some pieces from a vintage purse I had laying around. I’m going to attempt to make an ankle cuff for the black pair.
This particular Dasia is finished, faceup and all, just waiting on shoesies. I also experimented with some lead free solder to make her jewelry nice and spiky. I am beyond thrilled with how the earrings, necklace, and bracelet turned out. Her clothing is Unoa size, believe it or not, lol. I ordered a few pieces from SproutyBJD on Etsy and requested that she make the leggings ankle length. They fit perfectly! The shirt is a bit of a tight close in the back because I thought it would be stretchy fabric, but it’s still a great fit and I love it for this girl.
This shed fascinated me. There was a strong smell of industrial oils, dust, corrosion, and metal that was so strongly reminiscent of my grandfather's workshed when I was a child.
My basement painting room. I moved the collage stuff upstairs because I couldn't seem to get downstairs to create.
my new workspace is now 3/4 done. cable management is non-existent as of now, lighting needs to be put in place and I still need to decorate some more (hang a poster or two, put some plants in it, ...)
