From MiteyMarg:
The growth in the middle of the picture is a 'witches broom'. Its a proliferation of growth caused by a minute eriophyid mite or possibly a fungus. The mite causes the plant to grow like this to create an environnment with the right temperature and, more importantly, humidity, for quite a large population to live in. If you pull the little branches apart under the microscope you will find tiny little worm like mites with only two pairs of legs in large numbers in nooks and crannies. They are really small and only just visible at 10 x magnification.

Witch-hazel (Hamamelis)
I would like to thank all of my contacts for these photos. I have been alittle under the weather lately and was tired and lets say 'cranky', but after seeing all of your great photos, I looked around, saw the low light hitting the witch hazel and headed outside
Thanks for inspiring me ...

Witches of Ellezelles.
Ellezelles is the center of "Pays des Collines", a landscape of hills in the southern part of Belgium where the ghost of Quintine de la Glisserie (a witch burned in 1610) is still wandering around.
