Steilneset Witch Memorial by Peter Zumthor and Louise Bourgeois, in Vardø (Norway).

"Each house has a window, and in each window there is a light. And behind each light, there is a story." This is how Zumthor describes his first impressions of the northern city of Vardø when visiting for the first time, in winter. And this is what he tried to realize in his witch memorial - along the 140m long structure there are 91 windows, and behind each window a light bulb. And next to each window and light, there is the story of one of the 91 victims of the witch prosecution.

Tonight, April 4th, 20:00 hours, I will give a lecture on the palimpsest project as part of the side events to the exhibition palimpsest - norway, featuring a dozen photographs from the palimpsest series, namely all the "Norwegian" ones, is opening tomorrow, April 3rd, at the Architecture Research Center of the University of Nicosia. The exhibition is running until April 26th.

The Witches Tower build techniques. When I make these large builds I usually try to come up with a technique I haven’t seen before or try something I haven’t done before. It helps make these projects more interesting to build and makes bulk ordering parts a lot simpler.

This build I wanted to try messing around with flex tube to get the correct spacing I wanted for the bricks. I did try mixel ball joints and hinges but I quickly realised the price would get expensive quick. Flex tube just ended up being the simpler option and gave me a lot of options to attach things to.

The technique I use for the framing in the rock has been used in all my show displays. It is the best solution I have come up with to help make elevated terrain. It is very strong and light for transport. Its also quick to build and easy to change if need be.

An Evening of Witches, Wizards and Alchemy at Birkenhead Park, Wirral

It was wet and windy for my "piano lesson" photography today (while my daughter had a 30 minute lesson). I drove to the top of North East Valley and up into the clouds. Walked through puddles and mud. This fence with torn plastic and a misty house looked a bit like something a well know local artist would paint.

Hope your Wednesday is warmer and dryer!

I spent almost 2 weeks in Iceland with 6 friends: 5 of whom were not photographers. This meant that rather than following the weather like I would have preferred, we followed our itinerary instead. Mama Nature had the perfect chance to attach a rope between our RV and the rain clouds and boy did she take advantage. It wasn't until 9 days into our trip that I finally saw the sun. The first 8 days were filled with rain, fog, more rain, more fog, and grey grey sky. Fortunately the last 2 nights ended quite spectacularly.

There’s a few places in Iceland that photographers love and Kirkjufell Mountain is one of them. Of course it was high on my list of places to visit and we saved it for almost last. We arrived at Grundarfjörður, the town next to the mountain, parked the RV in their marina and made dinner. Dinner seemed to last for hours. Every few minutes I would get up, look at where the sun is, and say “guys, can we hurry up?!” Of course the non-photographers responded with “relax, it’ll be fine!”

Finally I jumped into the drivers seat, told everyone to hold on, and drove us over to the spot. Surprisingly, this view is right off the road (you can, in fact, see the road at the bottom of the mountain) and offers countless compositions. As we arrived though, the clouds started to thin out and it forced our compositions to move to the left, towards the 3-pronged waterfall and the bridge. Fortunately the sky lit up beautifully long enough for us to snap a few photos. About 20 minutes after this photo was taken, a marine layer moved in, the clouds disappeared, and the beautiful sunset was gone. Thanks, Mama Nature, for a yummy bit of dessert!

I loved the way the mountain looks like a witches hat while the waterfall and river brew below it.

Here in Ruovesi we have a fun tradition.....witches night.

It´s a fantastic day, which collects all the people around and there´s so much to do.

First we had a 10 km run. It´s a new tradition here. People challenge all the people they want and then if you want to take it you go and run 10 km. And this is just for fun, not so serious thing. People run fast if they want, but yesterday I saw people laughing and smiling to each other and everyone had this fantastic feeling.

Then in the evening we have other things like whiches competition, to sculp tree and then people vote who will win, all kind of things and then....fireworks!!!!

I know, I´m not so good in english, but I hope you get what I wrote here and I also hope you guys will come here someday and celebrite the witches night with me and all the people in Ruovesi : )

Also I want you to know that I´m a bit busy because of the school. Too much to do, so I´m sorry if I miss something important or do not comment as much as I would have to do.

But see ya someday!

Have a wonderful, fantastic, amazing week....or how ever you want it to be and remember....just have fun. Everything´s not suppost to be so serious. Serious people die thinking, not so serious people die a smile on their face

This is the grave of Francis Wilson who died on the 15th July 1880. She/He was buried as a witch - facing the opposite way and just outside the burial ground. Such an amazing cemetery at Mt Morgan.

I grew up listening to my maternal Grandmother reading faerie tales to me from a big (at least from a child's perspective) green leather bound volume of Grimm's Faerie Tales with fine gilding and marbled edges. Yet not all the stories I was told as a child came from my Grandmother's books. I also had a nanny when I was young. Her name was Eadie and she came from around Nottingham and she used to tell me English folk tales that were part of her childhood and history.

One tale Nanny Eadie told me which I loved was about a bitter witch who lived in the village of Sutton. She could transform herself into a monstrous black cat, and caused havoc in the household of a weaver of whom she was jealous.

My Grandmother's and Nanny Eadie's story telling instilled the love of faerie tales in me, both the written word and the illustrations created during the "Golden Age of Children's Illustration".

I am not a master illustrator like Edmund Dulac or Arthur Rackham, however this is my 21st Century tribute to the traditional English folk tale of my childhood using Playmobil characters destined eventually for my Goddaughters and nephews.

I hope you enjoy it.

If you like this I have another three sets of Playmobil faerie tale tableaux; The Frog Prince or Iron Heinrich, Rumplestiltskin and The Donkey Lettuces. Please click on the images in the comment below to view more.

In about ten days I'll be getting back on stage for the first time since early March, performing a new act at a burlesque school student showcase here in Wollongong.

So here's a picture of the Muse School of Burlesque performing our Bewitching Muse routine at last October's Burlesque Basement show. Can you see me?

"The Witch Bonney is a statue of a woman with her arms outstretched on a rectangular tomb. Her hands clutch a veil that falls down behind her body as though it were a sheet billowing in the wind. Her eyes are holes staring at the sky. Under her left eye, a black tear stains through the greening tarnish. Her dress is toga-style and its folds fall off both shoulders, exposing the upper parts of each breast. The fabric falls at an angle where one could mistake its level of exposure. The legend as told by the local high school students is that her dress gets lower and lower starting each October until, finally, her breasts are fully exposed on October 31st. However, given the Wiccans who leave offerings regularly and congregate there each Halloween, this probably would have been corroborated by witnesses. Other legends include a fellow statue as her guardian, a lion tombstone just in the line of her gaze, and also a tale of her rebirth in a tree. Groundskeepers trim all potential resurrection places nearby."

Red Witch Hazel leaves hanging on but not much longer. Too bad. The bright reds of the fall foliage should linger awhile longer.
