Roath Park and lake, Cardiff, 6 January 2012. The base of a cut down tree.

one of four versions of the photo of this tree--the original was like so many things on the southern plains in the winter--drab and lifeless--doubtless there are things we do not see

winter in thousand acres park

Seasonal cover artwork for OASIS

The top of this tree broke off at some point, giving it a sort of eerie look. Adding the black and white HDR effects only accentuated the weirdness.

I stopped down at Nine Mile Run late this afternoon and was struck by the strong delineation between where the setting sun hit the hillside and the lower level of the parking lot.

With Mount Fuji just visible next to the sun on the horizon.

Snow is falling

From the sky above

Snow is falling

Put on scarf and glove

Snow is falling

Go look outside

Snow is falling

The old landscape it hide

Snow is falling

What a beautiful sight

Snow is falling

It sparkles in the light

Snow is falling

Soft cotton wool flakes

Snow is falling

A white blanket it makes

Snow is falling

Short flowers disappear

Snow is falling

The cold is here

Snow is falling

Its time to play

Snow is falling

Lets make snowmen today :)

Poem by Micron

//

The other part of distrust is hope. You arrive breathless there where you thought were waiting for you only rest and calm, and the sense of the many things done is evaporated, escaping to your chapped hands and your exhausted mind. But the fear that it could fade even the long-awaited time, leaving behind only the flavor of a sloppy awakening, is the confidence that it simply won't go this way. That something extraordinary can still arise. That a wonderful sound still can warm the heart. That you can still have the rapid breathing of a child in front of his gift, at Christmas Eve.

Mount Baldy is 126 feet high and is moving at about 4 feet per year in a southward direction. The south side of the dune has been fenced off and grasses planted to try and slow down the movement caused in part, by tourists climbing to the summit. The trail has been re-routed to offset this issue and still allow access to the summit.

Red Twig Dogwood tree branches are beautiful and so vividly colorful in the winter. I love how they contrast against the white snow and in this photo against the white trees. I've struggled to capture that contrast many times but I was lucky enough on this day to get that splash of red.

A rare moment of sunshine...
