Tropical roof gardens and a leisure complex designed by Foster + Partners to sit above a new Crossrail station at Canary Wharf in London has opened to the public.
The roof garden, landscaped by London-based studio Gillespies, is located directly beneath a 310-metre-long transparent hood. Triangular air-filled cushions made from ETFE – a type of plastic used for its resistance to corrosion – are set into the timber-latticed awning.

This shot is obviously not one of the landscape or wildlife images I normally upload to Flickr. But I was recently informed that it was the Grand Prize winner in the 2018 Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Photo Contest, so I'm just going to toot my own horn for a moment and then get back to my regular subjects.
The Balloon Fiesta was actually on my wife's bucket list, so when we visited I took my camera along (of course). Glad I did!

my beautiful friend Ivana and i had such a lovely afternoon wandering through the streets and taking photos..
The Convoy :
Once a year , a local radio station hires a field near the back fo my house and rounds up trucking companies who wnat to donate. $25 is entry. They meet at a 45 min drive from here at a coal mine which feeds the steelworks , along with some motorbikes that are in the Convoy. It costs the mine over $500 000 to shut the mine for a morning for the Convoy.
They make the , normally, 45 min drive , through the tourist roads, horns and lights blazing and people completely line the streets for this event.
Trucking companies bid to be the first truck , and this year , it was the company i did my work experience with, Illawarra Truck Repairs and Spares, and their bid was $66 000 , and last year the winner was $70 000
Why:
For a charity called Camp Quality. All proceeds go to them, who use the money to take ill kids on camps and such.
What :
This year, 900+ Trucks and 700 Motorbikes
The event makes you proud to be a local ! and It is impossible NOT to smile when watching on side of the road.
I have been involved in 4 convoys in its 6 year history , in dad's truck , however last couple of years he has had no luck.
ALSO : I did 3 weeks work experience here as a Diesel Mechanic a year or two ago
With an H1 duo at the lead, the U TNDCXP races a Becker bound coal train past the once Champion paper mill. I had a different spot in mind originally, but due to the coal train stopping, I had to move location. I guess something is better than nothing

Sometimes, you meet someone and talk to them for just a few minutes, and feel that they are larger than life. Although I will not go into detail about our conversation, that was Mr. Hill.
Mr. Hill is an award winning, self-made long rifle maker. With nothing to learn from except 2 books (there was no Internet back when he was learning!), his very first rifle brought in an award. He was showing some of his wares, and they were beautiful.
I had taken several shots of him, and asked him for one more, and that after I had taken it, I had something to tell him. I let him know that his eyes and beard were just like my grandfathers, and he reminded me of my grandfather very much. I actually choked up a little when I was telling him.
Mr. Hill, thank you so much for talking with my wife and I, and for this shot. And, thank you very much for reminding me of my grandfather.

JAAROVERZICHT 2023
-----
In May 2023 we also took some time for a longer stay on the bank of the Mosel river, first in Koblenz Lay and later on in Winningen.
Besides a number of freight trains, we also got the regular passenger trains on photo, like this RE1 from Koblenz towards Trier and further one.

Like all of the 917's at this years 74th Members Meeting, there is a fascinating history behind this eye catching purple and green liveried car.
Chassis 021 was one of the original 25 cars built for FIA homologation in April 1969. The car sat for 12 months unused until it was sold to Antti Aarnio Wihuri from Finland who was planning to run the 917K in the World Championship of Makes.
Antti Aarnio Wihuri used the proven Porsche 908 for the first part of 1970 at Daytona, Sebring and Brands Hatch. For the faster tracks of Monza and Spa the 917-021 was put to use. An accident at Monza meant the car finished 11th after driver Laine hit the barriers that required 2 further pit-stops. At a damp Spa the 917K was competitive and the fight was on for a fourth place finish until a pit stop cost the team time. They did finish in fifth place beating the Porsche works entries.
Laine was then tragically killed at the Nurburgring race, where the Porsche 908 he was driving took off and somersaulted, landing upside down and trapping Laine who perished in the flames.
As a result of this tragic accident, the team withdrew the remaining cars from the race. With one driver and the Porsche 917-021, the team took over the David Piper entry for Le Mans, meaning that Piper joined van Lennep in the driver lineup. Unfortunately the car was damaged beyond repair after suffering a puncture due to a bent chassis.
At this point, the car was rebuilt by stripping it down and putting the components onto chassis 012 that had been damaged at Daytona in 1969. Chassis 012 was renumbered 021 without the team being informed. The car was repainted in a white and yellow livery with red sills ready for the Interserie championship.
Van Lennep finished second behind Neuhaus driving the Gesipa entered 917 at the first race. At Hockenheim, the next round of the Interserie, 917-021 was raced in a new purple and green livery based on the paint scheme of the Le Mans 917LH Hippy car.
The car took its first victory in the Interserie round at Keimola, wearing the same psychedelic livery only now in yellow with red swirls. At Zandvoort, van Lennep won adding another success to 021 score sheet. The last round of the Interserie was held at Hockenheim and van Lennep finished 3rd in the race and 2nd overall in the 1970 Interserie series, taking the Porsche Cup prize.
The Porsche 917-021 was subsequently returned to Porsche and was stripped of its engine, wheels and suspension that were required to build the 917 spyder that went on to win the 1971 Interserie.
The chassis was then converted to road use by the German Joachim Grossmann, who had to find an engine, gearbox and suspension to return the car to an operational state. In 1977 chassis 021 became a white road registered car with licence plate CW-K-917.
In 1983, American Don Marsh bought the car and returned it back to its original specification. In 1999, 021 was repainted in the purple and green psychedelic livery. In 2004, a new Championship for Historic Sports Cars called the Classic Endurance Racing Series was created, reuniting many Group 5 cars with classic tracks from the period including Monza, Spa, Silverstone and the Nürburgring. Juan Barazi took ownership of 021 taking the car to 3 wins and a second place, winning the Championship. The car was last seen at the Goodwood Festival Of Speed in 2006 before being retired.
In 2008, Vincent Gaye bought 021 and performed a complete restoration of the car that took over 3 years to complete.

I am absolutely ecstatic to announce that I have finally achieved a goal that has been on my bucket list for ages - capturing a snapshot of the elusive Painted Bunting. It's like finding a needle in a haystack, but with feathers. Although I wasn't able to snap a pic of a fully grown male in all his colorful glory, I did manage to get a shot of a young male. It's like getting a sneak peek of a superstar before they hit their prime.
As my fellow photographer and I explored the breathtaking Phinizy Swamp in Augusta, Georgia, the sweet melody of the bird's song filled the air. It was like a symphony of nature, and I was lucky enough to be in the front row. It was a truly remarkable day for bird photography, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the chance to witness such a stunning creature in its natural habitat. It's like seeing a celebrity in their natural habitat, but without the paparazzi.
It's like adding a little extra seasoning to an already delicious dish. All in all, it was a day to remember, and I'm thrilled to have finally checked this goal off my list! It's like winning the lottery, but without the money.

East Broad Top coal hopper continues to deteriorate in the Mount Union yard. Likely has not been moved since the closure of EBT in 1956.
With the train having to stop for a number of manually operated crossing on the North Blyth section of line it was easy to get ahead of the working and have a second bite of the cherry. 66743 again, This time seen approaching Winning only a couple of miles into it's long journey to Fort William.

Winning is the term used for newly discovered coal seams before they receive their official name, the area around Bedlington, Ashington and North Blyth was not short of mines back in the day.
The signal box is a NER design dating from 1895, one of three boxes on the triangular junction between Bedlington and Ashington on the Blyth and Tyne Railway at West Sleekburn. The others were West Sleekburn and Marcheys House boxes, the former being closed, and the other currently mothballed whist no traffic is booked to Lynemouth Power Station whilst it undergoes conversion to biomass. Winning Crossing box is on the Cambois branch to the docks at North Blyth.
The Alfa Romeo 6C name was used on road, race, and sports cars produced between 1927 and 1954 by Alfa Romeo; the "6C" name refers to the six cylinders of the car's straight-six engine. Bodies for these cars were made by coachbuilders such as James Young, Zagato, Touring Superleggera, Castagna, and Pinin Farina. Beginning in 1933 there was also a 6C version with an Alfa factory body, built in Portello. In the early 1920s Vittorio Jano received a commission to create a lightweight, high performance vehicle to replace the Giuseppe Merosi designed RL and RM models. The car was introduced in April 1925 at the Salone dell' Automobile di Milano as the 6C 1500. It was based on Alfa's P2 Grand Prix car, using a single overhead cam 1,487 cc in-line six-cylinder engine, producing 44 horsepower. In 1928 the 1500 Sport was presented, which was the first Alfa Romeo road car with double overhead camshafts.

In the mid-1920s, Alfa's RL was considered too large and heavy, so a new development began. The 2-litre formula that had led to Alfa Romeo winning the Automobile World Championship in 1925, changed to 1.5-litres for the 1926 season. The 6C 1500 was introduced in 1925 at the Milan Motor Show. Series production started in 1927,[3] with the P2 Grand Prix car as a starting point. The Alfa Romeo 6C-1500 Super Sport features a twin overhead cam six cylinder engine with a bore of 62 mm and stroke of 82 mm, giving a displacement of 1487 cc, as against the P2's 1,987 cc, while supercharging was dropped. First versions were bodied by James Young and Carrozzeria Touring.
In 1928, the 6C Sport model was released, with a dual overhead-camshaft engine. Its sport version won many races, including the 1928 Mille Miglia. Total production was 3,000 (200 with DOHC engines). Ten examples of a supercharged (compressore, compressor) Super Sport variant were also built. Wikipedia
Just got the notice today that I won the Mass Audubon 'Picture This' Contest in the under 18 mammals category with this photo. What a pleasant surprise! 4 bird photos entered and 1 squirrel, and the birds all lose. What the heck. Sometimes, the unexpected happens.
This was one of my first photos with the new camera. An oldie but a goodie.
