Whether a snowflake is delicate and ornate, or dense and pellet-like heavily depends on how "rimed" it is. Riming happens when water vapor fills small cavities within the ice crystals, and then overflows, allowing water to pool into droplets.
Credit: NASA/JPL/Jussi Leinonen
More info: NASA has produced the first three-dimensional numerical model of melting snowflakes in the atmosphere. Developed by scientist Jussi Leinonen of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, the model provides a better understanding of how snow melts can help scientists recognize the signature in radar signals of heavier, wetter snow -- the kind that breaks power lines and tree limbs -- and could be a step toward improving predictions of this hazard.

Coccinellidae is a family of beetles, known variously as ladybirds (UK, Ireland, Australia, Pakistan, South Africa), ladybugs (North America), or lady beetles (preferred by some scientists). Lesser-used names include ladyclock, lady cow, and lady fly.
They are small insects, ranging from 1 mm to 10 mm (0.04 to 0.4 inches), and are commonly yellow, orange, or scarlet with small black spots on their wing covers, with black legs, head and antennae. A very large number of species are mostly or entirely black, grey, or brown and may be difficult for non-entomologists to recognize as coccinellids (and, conversely, there are many small beetles that are easily mistaken as such, like tortoise beetles).
Coccinellids are found worldwide, with over 5,000 species described, more than 450 native to North America alone.
A few species are pests in North America and Europe, but they are generally considered useful insects as many species feed on aphids or scale insects, which are pests in gardens, agricultural fields, orchards, and similar places. The Mall of America, for instance, releases thousands of ladybugs into its indoor park as a natural means of pest control for its gardens.
A common myth is that the number of spots on its back indicates its age. (Wikipedia)
By the way the ladybugs in Belgium look the same like in Germany ;-) ....

Whether this one is a 1968 or 1969 model AMX I am not sure because they are so similar in appearance and details. For the first three model years 1968-1970, the AMX was a 2-seat model, a shortened Javelin ponycar. For 1970 the grille spanned the whole width of the front and included the headlights.
Edit: After examining another view of this car (not yet presented) the license plate appears to imply that this one is from model year 1968.
These shots always beg the question whether the view is in your windshield or rear view mirror. They also beg to have an accompanying earworm. My favorite highway song is still Ventura Highway, although this photo was taken a long ways from Ventura County.
So my thoughts turn to my Flickr friend Richard Davis, who just moved to California with his new bride. Life’s a highway… a cliché but so true, and I wish many happy turns for Richard and his wife as they travel Highway 101 and experience the adventures ahead.
Congratulations Mr and Mrs Davis! I hope your new highway brings fabulous joy and more music and photos to share with us. (after you get settled in of course.. :-)) )

The original church was built in 1902 and became a cathedral in 1968. Then in the early hours of Christmas morning in 1974 it was razed to the ground by Cyclone Tracy. Nothing but the front wall and portico were left standing; while around it the City of Darwin lay in near total ruin.
The new Cathedral was consecrated in 1977 with the Archbishop of Canterbury in attendance. The design incorporated the surviving portico as a memorial of Tracy’s devastation and of Darwin’s resolve that forces of destruction were not going to have the last word.

Patagonia, whether known or not so known, is a crazy windy place. We were extremely lucky with the weather while we were in Patagonia, but still we had some several occasions where the wind was so brutal to us - we had to face the other way from the way wind was blowing to us, and wait a few seconds... Often the strong wind comes with some sands and little stones possibly...
And we learned, this kind of crazy wind creates these lenticular clouds. Looking at these lentil / lens shaped clouds, somehow don't you feel like it makes sense? These clouds do look like the wind is blowing so strong to shape these odd shapes... No?

California, the 'Golden State', is home to some of the most beautiful beaches and rugged coastline in the US, making it a surf fisherman’s paradise whether you’re a beginner or an experienced surf angler. Surf fishing is the practice of fishing from the shoreline, where waves break onto the beach.
This scene was seen and photographed along the Pacific coastline at Montara, California, about 20 miles south of the city of San Francisco.
Regardless whether one is a tourist or NewYorkCity resident, or someone visiting from upstate or Long Island there’s no way one does not miss warm NewYork nights, stores, coffee shops or just hanging out in the city. Our mayor “sold away” NewYork, he threw it out like something useless, something that no one needs anymore. 💔 I don’t mind protesting but I do mind destroying the city. I do mind looting. I do mind the uncertainty of tomorrow. I do mind risking my life & life of my colleagues for unmindful protests in the middle of the pandemic in case of the second wave & increased cases. I do mind putting people with underlying medical conditions at risk. I said it before & can say it again ... never ever twenty years ago in June of 2000 I could even imagine that June of 2020 can turn into such a shithole !
Whether you go to Pandora during the day or during the night, there will always be something awesome to photograph. I think that during the day, the colors are more vibrant then during the night. Do you agree? Have a magical day!

Whether or not this is Crap Bird Photography depends on whether you are a fan of Northern Flickers or of Dark-Eyed Juncos. #crapbirdphotography (I didn't actually get this accepted in the group of that name, it was rejected with no explanation why. A bit confusing to me but, by gosh I think I know some crap when I see it lol. Maybe the junco is so crappy it can't be seen.)
I'm not sure whether I'll be able to attend BrickFair VA, due to the COVID-19 virus, but I am still continuing to build models for the eXperimental Military collaboration that we've got planned for the event. After completing the Russian S-37, I felt like building a US aircraft. One of the prettiest designs never to make it into service was the YF-23, the losing contender of the USAF's Advanced Tactical Fighter competition. My model represents PAV-1, the first of the two Prototype Air Vehicles built. It was painted in a dark grey colour similar to the F-15E Strike Eagle.
Whether it's a hay wagon, a manure spreader, a car with a camper or a wrecking ball hanging from a crane what you can find in a farmer's field is always interesting.
Stop squabbling! It really isn't all that important to definitively determine whether it was the Romans or Normans or someone called Eric who brought rabbits from continental Europe to Britain. What's important is now, post-Brexit, it's time for them to leave.
What's important is that the rabbit, cute as they can be, is an invasive pest species. On small islands their impact can be devastating. They were even introduced to Subantarctic Macquarie Island, almost as far south as this place is north. The rabbits here on North Ronaldsay are not native and are very bold; scampering about in broad daylight. That's a clear sign that there's no effective predation; no threats.
I came to see the sheep of North Ronaldsay. I didn't expect to see rabbits. Then again, I startled one recently from its repose under my rhubarb, after it seems, had helped itself to my carrots. I live on an island, one girt by sea, and indeed, I've seen them on the Holy Isle of Lindisfarne. I suppose I shouldn't be so incredulous that they'd be here; stuffing up yet another island.

“Love, whether newly born, or aroused from a deathlike slumber, must always create sunshine, filling the heart so full of radiance, this it overflows upon the outward world.”
~Nathaniel Hawthron
Still cold & gloomy here, but there is sunshine to be found.
Regardless of whether one admits it or not, everybody has a critical inner voice. Now and then, it takes the reins in its hand and guides into a collection of feelings, which in most cases are not particularly pleasant.
It causes the weird feeling of intimidation by its size and, while doing so, slowly rubs someone’s nose in why these feelings ought to be justified: There is always bigger, better, and sort of more. Though for some aspects this seems to be completely okay, for others, it causes great unrest and the feeling of being too small.
Frequently, it sweeps everything under the carpet in which we usually excel when stepping into the trap of comparison. In fact, it leaves behind a wasteland with the dominating impression of being too small and looking ridiculous.
Though looking to other directions is not categorically wrong, it does have loopholes. A fundamental one is that there is no final goal to approach. There will always be others – bigger, better, and sort of more. And so, it might be an attractive alternative to freely look around but come back home at the end of the day.
It may be a bit early in the year for it but a fine photograph of a threshing machine with a "meitheal" of people to feed the beast is always welcome.

Almost every autumn there are fires and smoke in Jackson Hole Valley. Whether controlled burns or lightning fires, like this one several years ago, smoke can be a challenge. Also, as with this fire, some of the trails are closed, preventing hiking to some of the more beautiful places. Wonder what this year is like?

I haven't grown flowers since 2006. This spring I decided to see whether I still had a green thumb. The sea sent me an ideal planter in the form of a kelly-green plastic jerrican that had been neatly sawn in half. I drilled holes in the bottom, filled it with potting soil and planted grocery-store annual fuchsias.
For a long time little happened. Then, suddenly, the stems began to put out flower buds. After one of the deer visited there were fewer of them, but she was kind enough not to eat the ends of the lowest stems.
The buds are popping like popcorn. At first the bursts were sporadic. By now the buds are exploding into bloom constantly. I just hope that if the deer returns she'll leave some of the popped flowers for us.
Update: Since I wrote this earlier today, the yearling doe has paid us a visit and nibbled the ends off several of the stems. How can I begrudge her that? I came out with a plate of sliced apple to divert her from the flowers. It worked, but not before she ate this very bunch!

I not sure whether this golden temple is part of the Ancient Siam complex or just adjacent to it. We went for a walk around and although it was under construction it's clear that there's still plenty of skilled craftsmen around that can build these amazing structures.
Whilst we couldn't enter the main hall itself we did have a walk around the grounds so plenty more photos to follow.
Interestingly when viewed on Google Earth one of the buildings takes the form of a swastika, something that wasn't apparent when we were there. I believe this is an auspicious symbol in Buddhism.......

From Wikipedia : "Ancient Siam (also known as Ancient City, Thai: เมืองโบราณ, Mueang Boran) is a park constructed under the patronage of Lek Viriyaphant and spreading over 200 acres (0.81 km2) in the shape of Thailand.
The founder's original idea was to create a golf course with miniatures of Thailand's historically significant structures spread around the course. During his research he found most structures severely damaged and decided instead to create new miniatures, to save the original structures when possible, or to re-create them full size or scaled down.
Ancient Siam is dubbed as the world's largest outdoor museum. Close to the Crocodile Farm in Samut Prakan province, the 320-hectare 'city' features 116 structures of Thailand's famous monuments and architectural attractions. The grounds of Ancient Siam correspond roughly to the shape of the Kingdom, with the monuments lying at their correct places geographically. Some of the buildings are life-size replicas of existing or former sites, while others are scaled down.
The replicas were constructed with the assistance of experts from the National Museum to ensure historical accuracy. Outstanding works include the former Grand Palace of Ayutthaya (destroyed in the Burmese invasion of 1767), Phimai Sanctuary in Nakhon Ratchasima, and Wat Khao Phra Viharn on the Cambodian border."

Whether on the open savannah or paved road in Africa, elephants always have the right-of-way. Unless they decide otherwise. From a fair distance away, this elephant had decided to take a casual walk to somewhere. Wherever it was, it was a path that put me and my large game-drive vehicle on a direct line between the elephant and where it wished to go. With the ideal lighting and scenery, I and my driver just sat and waited to see what would develop and for me to photograph the approach while sitting in a seat on the hood of our vehicle. This image was taken just before it stopped as we were in its way. Which one of us was the roadblock? We could not move forward any more than the elephant could. For what seemed like an eternity to me (about 8-10 minutes), it watched us while we watched him. Waiting for us to move? Its approach had been non-aggressive which reduced our worrying, so we continued to wait it out. It finally decided we must be an unmovable object and just walked around us, got back on its line of travel and walked on. We were then free to start the engine and go our own way. Close encounters of the elephant kind?

Whether you follow the stairs or the chain, you end up in the cold water below, next to the granite wharf. What this chain secures, and what its rusted predecessor below was for, remains obscure. And there may have been a dock at the bottom of the stairs at one time, but no more.
Whether due to the invasion of Bretislaus I of Bohemia in the 1040s, while others date the destruction to a fire in the 1080s, the original cathedral on Wawel Hill in Krakow was destroyed at some point in the 11th century. A more grand castle and cathedral complex was built around the ruins from the late 11th century and added to until the capitol was moved to Warsaw in the early 17th century. In the distance stands the Thieves Tower on the Western edge of the complex. Used as a defensive fortification, the dungeon was used to house common criminals.
