"You are born into this world

Looking down the barrel of a gun

And those who hold the gun

Want you to work fast and die young

And if you don't work

If you don't obey

They'll make you live in fear till your dying day

Those who govern hold the gun to your head

With religions, corporations, proud of blood

They've shed

Whether it's God or the bomb

It's just the same

It's only fear under another name

And the corporate snakes coming in to feed

On that pathetic fact known as human greed

Skin and bone being raked over those hot coals

This dump never seems to give time for human souls

And all those things that we have learned

No time for questions, you'll just get burned

You'll just get burned

And those words crush you flat

Like your skull's under a brick

And the fear's so damnned strong

That it makes you sick

And you can see right through those eyes

That make you fear, that make you lie

And you're taught to hold high

Yet you wonder why

Dumb values forced upon you by the

living lie."

This Gila Woodpecker contemplates whether this fruit of the Saguaro cactus is ready for eating. They're not. Looks like these are just flower buds in the pre-bloom stage. Eventually, they'll bloom into a white flower and then become a nice red fruit enjoyed by many birds and insects. I thought it was interesting how this woodpecker used the buds as little footholds, allowing it to avoid the prickly top of the cactus. This is either a female or a juvenile. The males have a red cap. The gila woodpecker is similar in size to the flicker but has much different markings (Flickers have spots on their breast and a mustache kind of thing). The Gila Woodpecker's range is just the Southern half of Arizona and down into Mexico. They evolved along the Gila River, hence the name.

Whether stepping singly across a wet meadow or filling the sky by the hundreds and thousands, Sandhill Cranes have an elegance that draws attention. These tall, gray-bodied, crimson-capped birds breed in open wetlands, fields, and prairies across North America. They group together in great numbers, filling the air with distinctive rolling cries. Mates display to each other with exuberant dances that retain a gangly grace. Sandhill Crane populations are generally strong, but isolated populations in Mississippi and Cuba are endangered.

Hello everyone!

I was debating whether to post this on Christmas day but I thought a few of you might like to try this out

yourselves or plan for next years tree, so I've thrown this up now. I love doing Christmas trees, they are so much

fun and relaxing. I wanted to do a tree that was filled with joyful moments and filled with character, unlike my two recent, very modern trees.

I went for a very traditional tree with the red and golden baubles with a green Christmas tree,

just like the real ones and not the fake plastic trees which I don't really like for environmental purposes.

The carousel was defiantly a pleasing moment when I found a high quality one which I could modify in and under the tree,

the detail of the carousel with the design, matches seamlessly with the Fancy decor scrolls and Christmas plaques. The carousel does in-fact move like a real one: i.gyazo.com/e8eab7422f4e3b8525c152b22ec6fa64.mp4

If you're a pro builder this tree shouldn't be at all too difficult to replicate. In the new year for 2020 Christmas I'd like to a bigger and even more joyful tree,

Whether the great master would have painted a leaf using his dextrous use of chiaroscuro is debatable:-) but the light here made me think of his technique, for some strange reason.

Whether you take this as a quotation from the Bible, or from the title of a 1961 Ingmar Bergman film, I just liked the way these figures were masked behind the shattered glass pane.

Whether you feel like a shorter walk closer to home or a day walk to get away from it all, it’s possible in Nelson!

Get some activity in your day using walking routes around town, or head into the hills and forests for some heart thumping, boot stomping fun.

Walk Nelson is divided into seven geographical sections with an overall map of each section showing the general location of walks. Each walk has route directions, and average time required.

Unlike the Moose 'incident' we felt a little more comfortable when this Roe Deer emerged from the forest during our trip to Norway

We were again quickly spotted but (unlike the Moose) he wasn't quite sure whether to come or go...

and in the end he did neither

Having got our shots we left him in peace to get on with his grazing

I debated on whether to show these images but it is what Africa is all about. The circle of life. if you have a weak stomach please don't view the third image. This all happened so suddenly. We were just about to leave this watering hole after viewing Zebras all lining up for a drink when this little springbok fell into the watering hole. A lone jackal sensed its vulnerability and started trying to grab it by its ear and biting its neck. It struggled in the water for a while before managing to get out but as it did it was all of sudden surrounded by 10 or more jackals who sensed that lunch was just about to be served. They started attacking it, but the springbok fought hard before it succumbed. You could hear its mother crying the whole time, it was so sad. BUT as I said its the circle of life and the survival of the fittest.

Whether or not intentionally done, these giveaways are arranged like an outdoor living room. Comfy chair is the centerpiece, with stool and fold-up seating for entertaining guests. The bookcase could occupy real reading material—and surely one of the nearby free lending libraries (www.flickr.com/photos/joewilcox/50940650678/) could provide a novel for personal perusal or perhaps poetry to share with the group. The other standing shelf would be place to put out food and drinks. The orange cones could cordon space for the gathering.

The setup is exactly how I found it in the alley separating Alabama and Florida Streets. San Diego neighborhood: University Heights.

I was in two minds whether to post this. I was just passing this gateway in a gap in the bank alongside an empty beach in Anglesey, when I spotted a splash of light on the field and farm buildings in the background. The colours and outline reminded me so strongly of North Calder, the farm I grew up on in Caithness, that I quickly grabbed the shot.

It's been a horrible couple of days with lots of rain, a raw wind and interminable darkness. And sat on Tuesday morning I thought about this gate. It's a gate you can't open. You can't climb over it or crawl underneath. You can't go round it.

For me it represents the five days of the working week trapped behind a desk. Monday to Friday when I'm at work, I've got to be patient. Through the gate I have a glimpse of the weekend, a splash of sunshine on the horizon, and freedom once I am on the other side of it. The steel horizontal bars of the week are ones I can count down to the weekend, and then they will magically disappear.

Well, perhaps your brain doesn't work the same way as mine. But no matter what you think about, it really doesn't matter. Make up your own dream to help you through to the weekend. Every little dream helps.

Considering whether to walk further or turn back ... the clouds were beginning to look a little rain-filled so I decided to head back home!!

Whether this log was originally felled for timber or if it was cut to clear a blockade in the canyon, I am unsure. Either way, it inherently notes some type of human intervention in nature. Recently I had an interesting conversation about deforestation with a few friends. We spoke about how the unregulated timber industry often clear-cut entire regions of trees for lumber. There was little thought put into recovery of the habitats or environment. In many cases, had park or forest management not been established to regulate or stop those industries, these environments would be trampled and leveled completely. There's a rough estimate that only 25% of the United State's original primary old-growth forests remain. And in the case of the largest and some of the oldest trees on earth, the Redwood and Sequoia trees, only 5% of the original coverage remains. Most of which is on public and protected park lands. The effort for conservation is an on-going battle, as those timber companies would turn those remaining groves into logs at the nearest opportunity. Through education, awareness, and visiting to observe the splendor in person, we may have a better understanding as to what we are saving for the next generation.

Whether you're a human making your way through life, or water making its way down the mountain, sometimes we're all faced with tough decisions. Good luck on your journey! ;o) Taken at my favorite spot at South Mountains State Park with that funky old tree in the background.

Whether poised at a river bend or cruising the coastline with slow, deep wingbeats, the Great Blue Heron is a majestic sight. This stately heron with its subtle blue-gray plumage often stands motionless as it scans for prey or wades belly deep with long, deliberate steps. They may move slowly, but Great Blue Herons can strike like lightning to grab a fish or snap up a gopher. In flight, look for this widespread heron’s tucked-in neck and long legs trailing out behind.

Largest of the North American herons with long legs, a sinuous neck, and thick, daggerlike bill. Head, chest, and wing plumes give a shaggy appearance. In flight, the Great Blue Heron curls its neck into a tight “S” shape; its wings are broad and rounded and its legs trail well beyond the tail.

Great Blue Herons appear blue-gray from a distance, with a wide black stripe over the eye. In flight, the upper side of the wing is two-toned: pale on the forewing and darker on the flight feathers.

Great Blue Herons can be found in saltwater and freshwater habitats, from open coasts, marshes, sloughs, riverbanks, and lakes to backyard goldfish ponds. They also forage in grasslands and agricultural fields. Breeding birds gather in colonies or “heronries” to build stick nests high off the ground.

Whether you choose to celebrate the holiday or not, have a lovely day my Flickr friends! Back later! :)

Whether you celebrate this American holiday or not, I wish everyone a blessed day making and sharing memories with friends and family! :)

Whether you celebrate a traditional Christmas and all that means or just the festive season, I would like to wish all my flickr friends a genuinely happy and safe time. Many thanks for your support and very kind comments during 2023.

It's been another challenging year, not just in our own country but throughout the world and after four years, we are still suffering the direct and indirect impacts of COVID (yep, people are still dying from it), environmental issues and natural disasters and two extremely cruel and unnecessary wars which still seem to have no end in sight. So let's hope that love will somehow prevail and that we see some miracles of genuine human determination to have a better world.

And yes, that's our street with some neighbours drifting down on their morning walk, a beautiful red Poinciana tree in the park (we like to think of these as Brisbane's Christmas trees" and on either side nearest, our "Magpie" trees which brought forth three young Maggies this year. Best wishes flickr friends.

Valentine's Day doesn't just have to be for couples. This day can be seen as showing love to the ones that matter to us most, whether it be family or friends. I'd like to say Happy Valentine's day to all of my Flickr friends! You all show your love and support with each fav and message. I wish you all happiness and joy tomorrow. Have a wonderful Valentine's Day!

A hobby is an activity that is regularly undertaken for pleasure, typically during one's leisure time... Reading is a very relaxing hobby that both my hubby and I enjoy... It stimulates your mind and makes you think... There's a fit for all personality types whether you like fiction, non-fiction, action, adventure, drama, humor, whatever... I try to read books as often as I can...

"It is not important whether you believe in spirituality or not, the four principles of spirituality apply to all from the moment one is born and will remain there till the end!

The Four principles of Spirituality are...

The First Principle states:

"Whomsoever you encounter is the right one"

This means that no one comes into our life by chance. Everyone who is around us, anyone with whom we interact, represents something, whether to teach us something or to help us improve a current situation.

The Second Principle states:

"Whatever happened is the only thing that could have happened"

Nothing, absolutely nothing of that which we experienced could have been any other way. Not even in the least important detail. There is no "If only I had done that differently, then it would have been different". No. What happened is the only thing that could have taken place and must have taken place for us to learn our lesson in order to move forward. Every single situation in life which we encounter is absolutely perfect, even when it defies our understanding and our ego.

The Third Principle states:

"Each moment in which something begins is the right moment"

Everything begins at exactly the right moment, neither earlier nor later. When we are ready for it, for that something new in our life, it is there, ready to begin.

The Fourth Principle states:

"What is over, is over"

It is that simple. When something in our life ends, it helps our evolution. That is why, enriched by the recent experience, it is better to let go and move on.

If these words strike a chord, it's because you meet the requirements and understand that not one single snowflake falls accidentally in the wrong place!

Be good to yourself.

Love with your whole being.

Always be happy

Love like there's no tomorrow.

And if tomorrow comes, well, Love again......"

Whether we’re rolling on 2 wheels, 18+, or anywhere between, let’s be safe out there!

The late Albert Szukalski, a Polish-Belgian visual artist, did a number of these “ghost” sculptures outside the Nevada ghost town of Rhyolite in the late 1980’s. Another group of them titled, “The Last Supper” is the most well known but this one actually spoke more to me and it was wonderfully lit on this morning just after the sun crested the ridgeline in the east. There was no title noted anywhere but “Ghost Rider” seems the obvious choice.

Nădrag’s industrial history is a microcosm of Romania’s broader industrial trajectory—from the promise of modern industry in the 19th century, through the aggressive industrialization of the communist era, to the stark decline following the 1989 revolution. The Ciocanul factory, once a symbol of economic vitality, now stands as a relic of a bygone era, overtaken by nature and time, as seen in the photo. While the factory’s abandonment reflects the challenges of post-communist transition, it also raises questions about the potential for revitalization—whether through cultural projects, tourism (like urban exploration), or environmental cleanup initiatives.

Whether it is high clouds or dense smoke from the California wild fires, this year's Perseid Meteor Shower isn't living up to high numbers (as expected with moonless skies). In over 1000 images taken from dusk to dawn, I only captured a half dozen Perseids. This was the best one (above the 7-Sisters star cluster).

With a Focal Length (35mm format) - 24 mm, even with an 80+ degrees F.O.V., I was more than surprised by the anemic performance this morning. I was planning to travel to Wyoming's Big Horn Mountains today but the smoke forecast is worse than here in Cheyenne. :-(

I cropped this image to improve on its composition. The sky light behind the bright lit house on the hill is from a fracking well 2 miles beyond. :-( In the 6 years living here, the Bortle sky index went from a darker 4 to a brighter 5. :-( :-( etc.

www.spaceweather.com confirms my comment above. Perhaps the shower will peak Friday morning (the 13th)???????

Whether it is because I spend so much time outdoors and they're used to me or due to the lure of the seeds, I cannot say, but by the end of the "session" I'd moved my little chair to within maybe eight feet of the feeder with little effect on the boldness of the birds. The cardinals and woodpeckers would stay away for maybe seven to ten minutes with each move closer, but the titmice and chickadees weren't bothered a whit.

This Heron got spooked shortly after I started shooting.

They are very wary.
