Whether they are raiding the bird feeder, transplanting tulip bulbs, making themselves at home in the attic or delighting you with their antics, gray squirrels inspire joy and angst. One of the main attractions of backyard gardens, they are the second most watched wildlife in North America, after birds, and there's no denying their appeal with their long, fluffy tail, soft brown eyes and amazing acrobatic skills.

The question of whether zebras are white with black stripes or black with white stripes might seem like the set-up for a classic joke. But this question is no joke, because it actually does have an answer: zebras are black with white stripes. All of a zebra’s fur, both black and white, grows from follicles that contain melanocyte cells. These cells are present in all animals, and they’re primarily responsible for generating the pigment that gives colour to skin and hair. In both cases, melanocyte cells produce melanin—the pigment—that is outwardly visible. In zebras, chemical messengers determine which melanocytes deliver pigment to which section of fur, thus creating the zebra’s black and white pattern. What’s important about zebras is that their white fur represents an absence of melanin; white is not its own pigment. Since white stripes only exist because pigment is denied, black is understood to be the “default” colour of a zebra.

Beneath all that fur, zebras have black skin, too. A shaved zebra, without any stripes, could be almost unrecognizable as an all-black animal.

I debated whether I should post this one or not. Focus is a little bit soft on the first kid, and obviously the second kid was running faster. But I felt this softness added a sense of movement. I also opted for a vertical frame to avoid the kids getting lost into the picture while still giving a sense of height (this pagoda is huge and wouldn't fit into the frame). Overall, I'm happy with it and hope you will enjoy it!

This is my last post before Christmas, so wanted to wish you all a wonderful holiday season, whether or not you celebrate. And I'd like to thank you for all your lovely comments throughout the year. I've made so many friends on here, and quite a few more in the past year, and love the interactions and seeing the mix of all your different types of photography. Looking forward to another year of photography and friendship :)

I made these wire balls for Christmas decorations and put them into a crystal bowl. Taken with my Pentacon AV 80mm, and Kenko extension tubes.

Whether you are ready or not, dont get caught in the cross fire, there is only 5 shopping months until Christmas if you do that kind of thing. Who only knows what November and December will be like this year.

iris [Reticulata Group], 'Harmony', j c raulston arboretum, ncsu, raleigh, north carolina

Iris reticulata, the netted iris or golden netted iris, is a species of flowering plant in the family Iridaceae. It is native to Russia, the Caucasus, and northern Iran, but cultivated widely in temperate regions. The reticulata group of irises is characterised by a fibrous net surrounding the bulb. They are small plants to 15 centimetres (5.9 in), with tubular, sharply-pointed, ribbed leaves, and flowers of yellow, blue or purple with an orange blaze on the falls, appearing in early spring. They are hardy, but prefer a well-drained sunny position in soil which dries out in summer; they are therefore suitable for a rock or gravel garden.

Whether we admit it or not, we all believe in magic. We may have become slaves of the daily grind of our life but a part within us wants to emancipate itself from it and hopes for something magical to happen...

"Whether we consider the individual, family, local, national or international level, peace must arise from inner peace. For example, making prayers for peace while continuing to harbor anger is futile. Training the mind and overcoming your anger is much more effective than mere prayer. Anger, hatred and jealousy never solve problems, only affection, concern and respect can do that". (Dalai Lama)

Sometimes I wonder whether we make reality appear all too strange and artificial with all our camera trickery. Take these two images for instance: I cannot make up my mind for I love to see the real power of this waterfall, which can only be appreciated by the left image shot with normal shutter speed. But I also love the alien-like smoothness and strange appeal of the long exposure. Any thoughts guys?

Hibuscus Double flowers

Whether it’s deciduous or evergreen, large or small, any hibiscus plant you see will undoubtedly catch your eye with their glorious and stunning flowers. And despite being relatively widespread, they always look special.

The beauty and popularity of the hibiscus is reflected in their varied use. The national flower of both Malaysia and Korea is a hibiscus (Hibiscus Rosa Sinensis and Hibiscus Syriacus). Hibiscus flowers are used as an offering to the gods Kali and Ganesh in Hindu worship. While in Hawaii and Tahiti, they can be used to symbolize a women’s relationship status.

You think you own whatever land you land on

The Earth is just a dead thing you can claim

But I know every rock and tree and creature

Has a life, has a spirit, has a name

You think the only people who are people

Are the people who look and think like you

But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger

You'll learn things you never knew you never knew

Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon

Or asked the grinning bobcat why he grinned?

Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains?

Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

Come run the hidden pine trails of the forest

Come taste the sunsweet berries of the Earth

Come roll in all the riches all around you

And for once, never wonder what they're worth

The rainstorm and the river are my brothers

The heron and the otter are my friends

And we are all connected to each other

In a circle, in a hoop that never ends

Have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue corn moon

Or let the eagle tells you where he is been?

Can you sing with all the voices of the mountains?

Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

Can you paint with all the colors of the wind?

How high will the sycamore grow?

If you cut it down, then you'll never know

And you'll never hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon

For whether we are white or copper skinned

We need to sing with all the voices of the mountains

We need to paint with all the colors of the wind

You can own the Earth and still

All you'll own is Earth until

You can paint with all the colors of the wind

We drove up to Squamish a few days ago in the hope of seeing eagles as we heard there were hundreds up there right now. No luck though, we only saw one very high in a tree. But it was a lovely walk along the Cheakamus River. In spite of much of the world being in a polar vortex, our weather is warmer, and the mountains have much less snow on them than any other year I can remember. There is a possibility of a bit of snow in a couple of days, and I hope it happens. Hope you all have a lovely weekend!

The robin is one of the most familiar birds of the UK, regularly visiting gardens. Robins are also common in parks, scrub and woodland, making their presence known with a loud, territorial song. They sing from prominent perches right through the winter, when both males and females hold territories; indeed, they are fiercely territorial, driving off intruders and even fighting. During the breeding season, the female is allowed into the male's territory where she sets up a nest of dead leaves, moss and hair. Nests often crop up in the oddest of places, such as plant pots, old wellies and shelves, but Ivy and other shrubs are their natural choice. Robins have been associated with Christmas ever since Victorian times; Victorian postmen, who were known as 'Robin Red-breasts' because of their red waistcoats, are thought to be the inspiration for so many robins appearing on our Christmas cards. Whether it's the case or not, robins certainly make themselves known in winter with their loud, aggressive song!

Well another outing with the camera, so soon? Drove to Teesdale and the Bowlees visitor centre today. Turned out it was half term so I gave the honey pots of Summerhill Force, Low Force and High Force a miss and wandered off up a path I hadn't previously been up. It led me here, Wester Beck which along with Flushiemere Beck becomes Bow Lee Beck. A nice lonely spot and worth battling the rain to get a shot or two. Title inspired by a beautiful song of the same name by the wonderful Tracy Bonham.

Whether on the dancefloor or on the broom, have fun and a great start into May 😊

Whether it's Pinocchio himself or one of his numerous brothers and sisters that live in two "flowerpartments" on my window sill remains a secret. I didn't ask when, after a heavy rain shower, sunshine transformed my living room window into a sea of diamonds, and I quickly grabbed my camera to photograph it. And the whole Pinocchio family got so excited when they saw my camera ("Look! We'll be on Flickr again!) that it was difficult to choose one of them as my model, because they all wanted to be in the picture. Some even tried to sneak into the frame after I'd chosen my model for this photoshoot, so I had to gently call them to order ("Calm down, guys, everyone will get a turn!"). My living room classic :) A few years ago I had orchids on my window sill, now it's flamingo flowers, and they are doing tremendously well there.

A few months ago I first introduced you to Pinocchio via the Ricoh GR III (please check my album, also for the orchid photo), and this image was taken with my traditional macro setup, the m.zuiko 60mm macro lens and the Oly. The pattern inside of the two larger bokeh balls is a reflection of the insect shield with some of the rain droplets on it that didn't make it to my window. Processed in DxO and in Color Efex where, amongst other filters, I'd used the Reflector Efex (Warm Gold) filter which did wonders for the light and the colours (coming from the street trees and the house across the street). Further tweaked in LR, where I slightly enhanced the blues in the colour calibration profile.

Happy weekend, Everyone, and stay safe and healthy!

Long exposure photography can create dynamic, and sometimes, surreal images full of motion. Whether there is a sense of tranquility, apprehension with regard to the unexpected, or an element of surprise, night images can also evoke a true sense of emotion.

Photographers who specialize in night photography are indeed a special breed. This should not be so surprising when one realizes how much in-depth understanding of light is necessary to capture that perfect photograph. Additionally, there are some rather basic tips any newbie night photographer should know. This, and more, will be covered in this edition of “After Hours Photography,” with a few night photography exercises tossed in to allow you to practice that which is covered. After all, practice - and I do mean a lot of it - will enable you to create magical night imagery!

First thing first, and that is - Know Your Camera! Whether shooting landscapes, or urban settings, trundle through the darkness not only looking for the perfect scene, but experimenting along the way. A thorough understanding of your camera, and what all of the buttons do, is essential for night photography. The last thing you will want, with little light with which to work, is to fumble with your camera and its controls. Not knowing can only make for stressful, difficult photography.

** Take a moment, and have a look at your camera controls. Pay close attention to the Mode Dial. This is where you will set how you will photograph.

Sepilok, Borneo, is a place where rehabilitated orangutans are looked after. there is a set feeding time but it is a lottery as to whether or not any appear. The monkeys never fail to turn up though.

A sort of super hero of the 21st century. Whether stopping a train with one hand, standing on the top of a mountain at sunset, competing with birds on the heights of any building, walking lonely streets, where mystery is part of her adventure. Wherever she chooses, she leaves her eternalized footprints. Some have the wonderful possibility of meeting her in her daily intimacy, others, when they see her, ask her for a hug,...yes,...I\'ve seen it!!! As a wonderful token of gratitude to such a talented artist. Like every super hero, I am sure that behind her magical and almost iconic avatar, there is a beautiful person, otherwise she could not transmit so much sensitivity, immersed in landscapes, cities, fields, buildings, etc,...I was saying that her little body becomes part of the landscape, in absolute solitude. His greatest habit is contemplation. But like all superheroes, she has a mystique. Like an aura that surrounds her, I saw it. Her walk, her movements are part of an intimate dialogue between her and the place where she is. Like an actor on stage, those of us who were lucky enough to see her in action, sat in our seats, like an open-air theater, and simply watched. So that at the end of her play, we stood up and shouted Bravo!!!! And applaud until our hands hurt.

Thank you very much, nekonuko Nakamori for allowing me to follow you with my camera and ,... well try to capture that essence, which is your personal stamp. Once again, thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to upload to my page a photo that will undoubtedly be my favorite, because not all of us are lucky enough to include a super hero in our Stream.
