“WHENEVER the Presbyterian bell

Was rung by itself, I knew it as the Presbyterian bell.

But when its sound was mingled

With the sound of the Methodist, the Christian,

The Baptist and the Congregational,

I could no longer distinguish it,

Nor any one from the others, or either of them.

And as many voices called to me in life

Marvel not that I could not tell

The true from the false,

Nor even, at last, the voice that

I should have known.”

Whenever I review the blessings received while visiting Custer State Park a year ago this month, I am still as overwhelmed as I was while I there and receiving them! Finding myself alone and in proximity of a bachelor group of Bighorn Sheep has been a definite top 10 wildlife encounters of my life…thus far!

I have no idea how their hieratical system works, but did find it amazing how this lad took it upon himself to be the gatekeeper for the group. When I first drove up on them crossing the road, he stood facing me as if a statue, as the others trotted past. Once I got out of the car and approached the group, he moved off the road and joined the group. As others grazed, he remained vigilant at his post, keeping his eyes on me and his ears on the rest of the group as they moved up the rugged rock hill towards the high country of the park.

He never seemed alarmed or anxious…not that a kid from Indiana would know what that looked like…so I just slowly and methodically closed the gap between us to improve the lighting.

When they finally grazed themselves up behind a large rock outcropping, I knew my photo session had concluded. While climbing back into my vehicle, I looked at the clock and discovered that I had been out there with them alone for just over 30 minutes…without another vehicle coming by to ruin the encounter…a true blessing in itself!

Should God’s plan for me ever place me in a nursing home for any period of time, besides tons of family photos, I would hope to have a shot of this lad on my wall. The memory of our time, man to man looking into each other’s eyes at such close range will always be special.

Whenever I go into the forest I take my backpack with me to collect things I find interesting, such as leaves and flowers of plants I don't know, some stones of interesting morphology among other things.

It is also important to dress appropriately, loose clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to protect me from the sun.

On this trip, almost at dusk of the day, I came across a waterfall and as I was thirsty I went to drink a little, the water was cool and comforting. I hope to return to the same spot another time.

Whenever I see lavender, the song Lavender's Blue plays in my head. I think it is a memory of my dad singing it to get me to sleep, but I cannot really remember.

I ache all over. I am so tired that it is ten to ten and I am thinking of sleep. I have barely read all day. And yet I am the happiest I have been in a long time. I spent the day outside, being useful and productive, working down at the lakes alongside Dad and some of the other trustees, tidying the place up, not caring that I was covered in mud, or that it was raining, or that my back and lungs were hurting (okay, so that I did care about when Dad came to take over). I had initially gone down with Dad to take photos for the website, planning on photographing the lakes then going and sitting in the car to read until lunchtime, when I assumed we would go home. In fact, after taking photos of the lakes we ended up playing with a flamethrower, trying to clear back some of the reeds. After that, I just figured I would continue working. We got home at half six this evening in the end.

Whenever I see three trees alone and standing in a field, I automatically think of Macbeth's Witches, the "weird sisters." And because I'm me, I always remember that our word "weird" comes down to us through a variety of spellings from Old English's "wyrd," which was the ability to control the fate of humans.

From that, it morphed into an adjective to describe something supernatural. Then to something strange.

The first recorded appearance of "wyrd" is in Beowulf: "Gæð a wyrd swa hio scel!" - Fate always goes as she must.

Me and the idea of "fate" and "pre-determination" and/or "freewill/lack-of-freewill" are on the outs these days, mostly due to discussions about such things being annoying.

And still, three trees = the three wyrd sisters from Macbeth. But these trees can't tell my fate. They care literally nothing about its existence whether true or not.

But how could I not think of our own fate, our own futures, when seeing these three trees, all in various stages of life? They are all perfect.

Whenever I think of Valparaiso, I remember it as very vibrant and a little crazy, both for its haphazard narrow streets and its festive vibe. It seems that everyone in Santiago exits to its packed bars and beaches in winter if they possibly can. Built on very hilly land, it has many of these steep sidewalks. Also, a LOT of sadly stray dogs, a common problem all over Chile.

Every once in a while, whenever I show off a synchronized flash image, I read a comment like "O. Winston Link!" or "OWL shot!"

Of course, those compliments are flattering and appreciated. But, to be clear, I am not O. Winston Link from Brooklyn. Allow me to elaborate.

Link spent about six years documenting — principally at night, through his pioneering work in flash photography using elaborate setups — the twilight of American steam locomotion on Norfolk & Western Railway in the late 1950s. My subjects, on the other hand, aren't often steam locomotives. When the subjects are steam, though, they're far from the autumns of their revenue service careers and often wonderfully preserved and going strong, many thanks to the armies of volunteers who keep the locomotives (and the organizations behind them) going.

Link, often accompanied with an assistant, would set up hundreds of single-use flash bulbs, miles of cable, and custom bulb holders to illuminate a scene, but only after days and sometime weeks of deliberate planning and methodical research. My equipment, on the other hand, relies on no more than five studio flash units all linked with wireless radios.

I could carry on ad infinitum on the differences between he and me. However, there is one belief that Link held that might be a place of common ground. Link once said, "All I wanted was to get some nice pictures of trains at night." Here, we are of one mind.

In this scene at Groff's on Strasburg Rail Road, Norfolk & Western Class J 611 pours on the coal and delivers just what I wanted: a nice picture, of a train, near nightfall. Simple and satisfying.

Whenever I take a photo such as this one, I think of our time spent with David Peterson. With a landscape, we were always instructed to pay close attention to the foreground of our image and we were also instructed to follow the clouds. I've tried to follow his advice over the years because he was an outstanding photographer. I miss our time spent with him and his professional photographic team!

Holy Rope - otherwise known as Hemp Agrimony is a tall, perennial plant found in damp grassland, marshes, fens and wet woodlands, and along riverbanks - insect pollinators and butterflies love it.

Whenever I look at this photograph, I wonder how life will be different if we give up the 9-to-5 job, go out at sunrise and get back at sunset and be self sustained. It's so hard these days when people have some much to chase. But the point is the connection with nature fascinates me a lot.

Whenever the Queen Emma Bridge opens to let a ship through the local ferry kicks into action, taking passengers back and forth across St. Anna bay until the bridge closes again.

The ferry itself is a little bit rickety, the deck can get crowded and the trip is short

(<5 minutes). It is a lot of fun though and one of those things you just have to do!

Whenever we go camping, I am thrilled to hear the White Throated Sparrow sing his serenade from the tree tops. This guy was spotted on the shores of Lake Superior last spring. He was fluffing up his feathers. It was obviously one of his favourite spots to preen as there are a few loose feathers in the crook of that branch. His colors blended nicely with the tree colors. Happy Wing Wednesday!

Whenever I've searched images of Brodsworth Hall, this seems to be the iconic view of the house; looking at it from the back, framed by the foliage in the archway and the bushes in the formal gardens.

Whenever I come across a peaceful scene like this I am reminded of the aria of that title by Johann Sebastian Bach. This beautiful pasture was captured near Thornby, in the north of the predominantly rural county of Northamptonshire. Though major roads such as the M1 and A14 pass through the county it is relatively little known, though the Bridget Jones films have placed her parental home here. It is my home county too.

Whenever I travel to Alberta, Canada I always take with me two cameras, one for landscapes and the other for wildlife. On this particular day we were heading to Kootenay National Park when my husband spotted this grizzly that was ready to cross the road. He was very smart looking in both directions for cars to cross the road before heading into a river and swimming away. Given how quickly the bear was moving I could not afford to adjust my camera and just began to immediately take photos from inside the car where it was secure and safe.

Whenever I see the moon I can't help but think of the Laurie Berkner song, "Moon, Moon, Moon". In the song she refers to the moon as, "My nightlight". I have listened to this song, literally, hundreds of times. Two of my kids were obsessed with the artist and her songs. Luckily Laurie Berkner is easy on the ears, so I didn't mind listening to her on repeat.

Whenever we drive on trips - which is quite often, I made it a habit now to explore some part of the countryside, usually an hour long. I survey the route and look for potential areas that I can sight something interesting. And this time, I was lucky - sighted this Female Knob billed duck by herself in the presence of several Coots and Lesser Whistling ducks. She was fighting with the Coots for the food.

Named after the male which has a Knob like protrusion on the beak, these are local migratory birds with movements within the country.
