When I was a child, someone give me this wooden construction kit as a gift. It contains only wooden parts you can combine to block houses from your idea.
I FINALLY found a Maple tree with branches low enough to the ground for me to nip a little twig with flowers.( I am 5'3" so pretty low to the ground!) I chose maple blossoms as they played a huge role in my young life. As I would walk to and from Prince of Wales Public School along Cannon Street in Hamilton ON in the spring, I was absolutely transported by the overwhelming fragrance and beauty of the canopy of maple flowers in bloom above my head! Every spring when I see the maples in bloom, I am six, seven and eight years old again . BTW, those same maples played a big role in the autumn too. The leaves turned brilliant golden and I remember crunching through the dry, fallen leaves and jumping into huge piles of them raked up by neighbours!LOVE maple trees! HMM
This weeks Macro Mondays theme is "When I was a child..."
When I was a child, having these three simple things would have kept me occupied for hours.
Not having a lot of money when we grew up, I found entertainment in simple things. And I had an affinity for all things optical. Whether a pair of toy binoculars or a simple magnifying glass, these things held great wonder to me. When very young, they seemed magical. Their ability to alter the way I saw the world around me was fascinating.
As I grew, my first purchases that I made with the money I "earned" (birthdays, small odd jobs) were optically oriented. A small collapsible telescope when I was 8, and a nice pair of binoculars when I was 14.
My earliest uses of optics included burning holes in dried leaves, and melting the joints of my green army men so that I could change the poses they were in. I progressed to using the optical instruments for their intended purposes, exploring the macro world around me with lenses, and my brothers microscope. As I got older and understood the concepts and principles of how they worked, I was driven to learn about what they could be used for. That is how I became interested in photography.
Optics helped me understand our place in the universe better with my first 4 inch reflecting telescope. Learning to use it properly drove me to eventually acquire an 8 inch Newtonian reflector, which, since I now spend much of my time pursuing photography, is sadly under used.
Engineers design optical systems for very specific purposes and to very exact standards. Understanding the limitations and design compromises that go into various optical systems has allowed me to select equipment that maximizes my enjoyment of my hobby.
A journey that began with curiosity and wonder set me on a path that now allows me to enjoy a great hobby.
HMM.
For Macro Mondays Redux 2016--My Favorite Theme of the Year:
I think this could go under a few categories, such as
Arrow
In a row
Stripes
When I was a Child
The colour red
I think 'When I was a Child' is most apt as I used to be (and still am) fascinated by Roman artifacts, and evidence of a bygone empire.
Taken with a Raynox M-250 added to the lens to allow close focusing.
When I was a child, photo-sharing meant pulling out the Kodak Carousel slide-projector (and YouTube came in 8mm and Super-8).
1:1 reproduction ratio. Dark room. Off-camera radio-triggered EX600-RT Speedlite with diffuser under the carousel to simulate the projector lamp.
Macro Mondays - When I was a Child...
When I was a child I used to open all the toys and other stuff to see how and why they work. Or won't work.

When I was 3, I went to a birthday party for one of my neighbors. The party was in their back yard and somehow I managed to fall into their swimming pool, party dress and all. While completely submerged, I was aware of the danger and that I could drown, but I was not afraid. I knew I could swim, so I did not feel worried at all. With fear out of the picture, I was free to enjoy the spontaneous artistry all around me of the beautiful aqua blue and the way the sunlight played with the waves in motion. I wanted to stay awhile longer, then I heard some splashing. I looked up to the top of the water and towards the sky. I saw colorful dresses and high heels of all the mothers of the kids at the party. They were in a panic, yet I was completely calm. Someone's hands reached in and pulled me out of the water and it was all over. An aqua blue moment in time...

Macro Mondays- Theme-"When i was a child...."
When I was a child I just loved making bubbles as you see them flying high or randomly here and there. I still love playing with bubbles.
When I was a child this doll was given to me on my Name's Day in July during our stay in the summerhouse. I've forgotten the real name of this little doll but when taking pictures I noticed the name "Rosebud" on it's back; so Rosebud it is. A doll from 1955. It's legs are loose and it has lost the red cot with handles to carry around.
The theme for Macro Mondays, this week is "When I Was a Child" Books were my thing, Huck Finn, Tom Sawyer, The Hardy Boys.......Classic Comic books.
"When I was a child I was always fascinated by the strange creatures you find in Rock Pools"
The Macro Monday theme of "When I was a child..." inspired me to take the family on a day trip to Lyme Regis. Hermit crabs have always fascinated me, so when we found this little one (about 1cm across) it made the perfect subject.
I believe this is a South-claw Hermit Crab (Diogenes pugilator) which is the only UK species with a bigger left claw.
When I was a child I thought dandelion milk was poisonous. This "knowledge" came in handy at about age 7. All of us kids in the neighbourhood lived in fear of "the crazy man who lived in the bushes". And one thing we knew for sure, he hated children more than anything.
One day, with my little sister in tow, we got really brave and went deeper into the woods than we'd ever gone before. Lo and behold...there was a cabin back there - that was all the proof our childhood imaginations needed - the boogeyman was real!! The DANGER was real!!! We all ran screaming through the trails from the woods, sure he was right behind us - I swear I could feel his breath on my neck. What a close call!!!
I knew something had to be done, and so my sister and I came up with a cunning plan to save our neighbourhood from the crazy man. Our idea was simple - we stole a piece of my mother's gum (Wrigley's Doublemint, of course), and collected dandelion stems. We then painstakingly painted the gum with the dandelion's milk, as everyone (under the age of 10) knows it is a deadly poison that kills instantly!
We tried to dangle the gum from an overhanging branch with some pink thread we found, but the sticky gum kept falling out. So we compromised, placing it oh-so-invitingly upon a rock embedded at the top of the trail.
Our theory was that we would lure him out of the bushes, and he would chase us (I suspect I volunteered my sister for this role). Then, as we reached the safety of the yard at the end of the trail, he would see the gum laying there - so tempting and irresistible - and instantly stop in mid-chase, pop it into his mouth, chew it, and die.
And that, my friends, is how my sister and I killed the boogeyman and saved our neighbourhood!
Happy Macro Monday!!!
When I was a child…I used to bike anywhere and everywhere with my buddies. Every time was a new adventure.
"When I Was a Child" theme for Macro Mondays group…HMM! :)
Macro Monday theme - When I was a child....my mother cut my hair and saved it in an envelope. About 10 weeks ago she passed away and whilst sorting through her personal effects, I found an envelope with my name on it and this. I don't know why she didn't do it for my 7 siblings.
when I was a child I asked my mum to teach me how to knit. Then I quickly forgot. A few years ago I used the internet to teach myself once more.
Macro Monday theme : When I was a child enjoyed tossing around the ole pigskin.Enjoy was now and only have a few months before football season starts back up.
When I was a child (in the 1950s) we competed with marbles while our world leaders competed with nuclear brinksmanship.
A "Macro Mondays" submission on the topic "When I was a child".
When I was a child I loved especially the PEZ (it was a little guy in which put small square candy in her womb and when leaned his head back it was distributing candies one by one) these Pez I have discovered in the 70s that still exists today, I am delighted to make you discover (if you do not know them) because in my eyes this is really the first candy dispenser :)
Macro Mondays when I was a child
Nobody likes me,
Everybody hates me,
Guess I'll go eat worms,
Long, thin, slimy ones,
Short, fat, juicy ones,
Itsy, bitsy, fuzzy wuzzy worms.
Down goes the first one,
Down goes the second one,
Oh how they wiggle and squirm.
Up comes the first one,
Up comes the second one,
Oh how they wiggle and squirm.
...my mother had this green dish containing bits of jewellery, including a necklace of crystal beads, on her dressing table. Her brush, comb and mirror matched the dish and sat on mats that she called a cheval set. My favourite item though, was a crystal perfume bottle. I can still bring the scent of it to mind.
I used to sit and admire myself in the three way mirrors, adjusting them so that many reflections of myself were revealed. A bit narcisisstic but I've grown out of that!
7 Days of Shooting/Week #46/A Little Sparkle/Macro Monday
When I was a child, my sister and I were constantly playing one sport or another. This was at a time prior to any organized sports for girls, but we were always playing one on one against each other. By the time we were 10 we were able to play many sports in our gym classes at school. Field Hockey and Lacrosse were two of those sports that we played in gym and later on our high school & college teams. Both of us continued to play on club teams after college, and both of us became physical education teachers & coaches.
of course, the equipment looked a lot different when I was young!
When I was a child.......I want to do many things. I want to take dance lessons, music lessons or participate in any sports. But my parents can't afford to enrolled me in any of the extra curriculum. So I can only wish. I didn't even tell them my wishes because I didn't want to make them sad.
This picture is of a musical box I got when I was child as a gift from my parents.
Macro Monday's theme: When I was a child... When I was a child the world was full of magic and wonder. The imagination can take you to wonderful and terrifying places. This 1.5 inch statue of a Fae and her unicorn is within a musical snow globe that my child now has and watches with wonder as it plays its tune and slowly spins. I cant help but wonder what magic is spinning in my child's head as it once did in mine.
When I was a child... I liked to play with the radio car. This one is from a mustang 1965.
I was born in 1969 , this Mustang is not my father's car , but it could have been 😉.
