I’m heron there’s a celebrity in town! ;D I finally got to see the famous yellow crowned night heron last weekend, but of course on a dark and rainy afternoon. This is a southeastern US species, so to see one in Minnesota is unusual though not unheard of. This one has taken residence in a large suburban pond, much to the delight of local birders and photographers. Those big red eyes are amazing!

After attempting this shot in nothing but cloud cover all weekend, the morning run to Walton, VA on Memorial Day Monday finally rewarded the assembled photographers with brilliant sun on the former Norfolk And Western coaling tower at Vicker. With all the CPLs along the stretch from Roanoke to Walton being removed, this was one of the few N&W left, and it is quite the impressive structure to see up close. Not a bad way to wrap up a great weekend!

The University of Central Arkansas celebrated its homecoming weekend Oct. 29-30 with numerous activities. Members of the 50 year class were honored at the Half Century Club, young alums were welcomed at the Bear Bash, and Stephanie Sanders was named the homecoming queen. On the field, the Bears enjoyed a 30-23 win over Southeastern Louisiana.
