Week 3: 52 Weeks For dogs
I wanted to start out with a simple portait of him. This is his typical "I'm sitting on the sofa" look. I will get more creative as the weeks go by (hopefully!). I started late and don't want to miss the deadline for this week.
Kumbaya Knight In White Satin - parents are Tangaloor Firestorm (Sebastian) x Kumbaya Sandy Beach (Sandy)
The My Four Hens Project 52 theme this week is simplicity which really resonated with me since life has been exceedingly complex of late. I thought of many different types of shots that might have worked… but this week, like most weeks, beat me up a bit. So this shot is a result of trekking out behind my house this afternoon and getting down to the ground. These tiny wildflowers are sprouting up everywhere and they hardly deserve a second glance since they look kind of like a weed. But look what happens when you get close with a macro…
Looking at this image makes me feel peaceful in my soul. The simple lines and colors are rich with detail and texture. I have a feeling I’ll be looking at this photo a lot in the near future. We met with Dominic’s psychologist this week and got the results of all the tests, assessments, and evaluations. Dominic does indeed have ADHD, mixed type, moderate, as well as dysthymia which is a low grade depression. Our next step is to get in with the psychiatrist (booking in March and waiting on a call back) and meeting with the school administration for a 504 plan and a BIP. Dominic’s reaction surprised me; he actually seemed relieved. I can imagine that carrying the burden of these severe behavior problems would weigh heavy on him and realizing that he’s not fundamentally at fault would be very reassuring. I’ll write a separate post soon about the appointment and all the rest of the information… remind me to fill you in about what his TAG teacher told me when she called this week.
Thanks for looking!
Week #6: This picture of Brock was taken, specifically for the 52 weeks for Dogs Group. An editorial photo this week for the group. Every day, usually mid-afternoon the boys and I go on a 2 mile run up and down our country road. I've tried many ways of running with both dogs, but this set up seems to work the best. Brock is attached to one leash with a gentle leader (because he nearly outweighs me and can be a very naughty boy - he thinks he OWNS the road) and then Max is attached to Brock's harness. That was I can spend my energy controlling Brock and Brock in turn controls Max.
Technically : Zoom lens, SB800 flash unit on camera pointed at the dogs. Squatted down at the dog's eye level. Shot as a RAW file.
Assessment: Boring photo, but I've been sick all week (laringitis) and didn't have enough energy to do much more. Today was the first day I've felt almost normal.
A time for relaxing by the fire, camping, water fun, watermelon, fireworks, sandy toes and adventure. Here we go!

Lower Kite's Wood, Worcestershire, July.
I had this down as a strange looking Cnephasia sp. but having dissected it I am now sure it is a strange looking Eana incanana! I removed the ovipositor etc. for a clear view of the sterigma and colliculum.
Razowski states that there are often specimens with ill-defined markings.(Whether this is what he means I have no idea!)
Week 47/52
Happy Thanksgiving !!
I've wanted to take a photo like this all week, and I'm glad i got guts enough to do it because generally I'm terrified of taking photos in the open!
I can't believe I only have 5 weeks left.
Week 9 – Shadows
This week was a fairly quick and easy photo to create. I had an idea of what I wanted; so as usual, I made my poor, long-suffering husband endure severe hardship by languishing outside in the rain. Actually, the one time I wanted rain, it wasn't raining for once, so I made him hose down the patio to make it look like it had been.
I set the camera up on a tripod, turning all the settings to manual (including focus) so that the exposure would be the same for each of the pictures. I focussed on his shoes and took a few pictures, making sure he created a decent shadow on the wet patio.
I then took a spare pair of shoes out to him, and held on to his trainers while he took them off and changed into the others to make sure the original shoes didn't move. Of course we had to do the laces up again too, which is not as easy when they are just sitting on the ground. I took a few further photos with just the shoes standing on the patio.
In the RAW conversion in Photoshop, synchronised the two images so that any editing would remains the same.
Using the picture with David as the Background, I added the one with just the shoes as a layer above. Even though I had kept the camera in one place on a tripod for the two shots, they were still ever so slightly out, so I used Auto Align Layers to get them spot on.
Adding a Layer Mask to the photo with just the shoes, I used the Brush Tool to remove the foreground, revealing the shadow on the ground in front.
Using Curves and the Dodge and Burn Brushes, I created a stronger contrast for the shadow.
In the Nik Colour Efex Pro I adjusted the Tonal Contrasts and added a slight vignette to the whole image. Isolating the shoes with a Quick Mask, I used the Details Extractor to make them more punchy, then selected inverse and lowered the saturation for the patio to make the shoes stand out even more.
