Twofold is a series of folding furniture with a dual function. When the furniture is not being used, they hang on the wall as two-dimensional compositions. The pieces can be removed from the frame, unfolded, and used as functional objects. After use, the furniture is stored on the wall in its frame. Utilizing folding
elements such as hinges, bungee cord and other structural principles, the pieces transform with ease in one fluid motion. The interactive aspect of these forms creates an awareness of how furniture performs within our personal space and its importance in daily routine as an extension of the body. The graphic images transform from a representation of an origami object in mid-fold on the outer surface to a completed representation of an origami object on the inner surface. The origami graphics symbolize a two-dimensional
surface that folds into a three-dimensional object. These graphics echo the process of the folding furniture while it’s being transformed. Like origami, the folding process involves effortless hand manipulation to fold the material into its intended form
In addition to origami, the inspiration for this work originates from nomadic living in small apartments, resulting in the continual reorganization of my own personal space. I am passionate about environmental conservation; I choose to take up less space and create less waste in my personal life and in the work I create. My furniture is designed in a CAD-based program, laser cut out of sheets of sustainably harvested
plywood with minimal material waste, assembled using eco-friendly adhesive, and sealed with waterbased
finishes. The flat-pack aspect of the work suits a mobile lifestyle for those who move frequently while reducing the cost and pollution associated with shipping and relocating. The compact nature of the work provides more open space and promotes an efficient use of a small living environment. This allows a small space to be in constant flux; transforming from one activity to the next throughout the day as furniture is taken off the wall, used, and put back into its frame.
When grouped together, these pieces establish a transformative personal space that becomes a fluid extension of the body, creating a ritual performance of efficiency that diffuses into one’s lifestyle.

On August 31 1997, DIANA PRINCESS OF WALES died as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident in the Pont de l'Alma road tunnel in Paris, France while speeding to escape paparazzi. Her companion, Dodi Fayed and driver, Henri Paul, were also pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Fayed's bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, was the only survivor. An eighteen-month French judicial investigation concluded in 1999 that the car crash that killed Diana was caused by her chauffeur Paul, who lost control of the car at high speed while intoxicated and under the influence of antidepressants.
The two forward passengers' airbags had functioned normally. None of the car's occupants were wearing seat belts.
As the casualties lay seriously injured or dead in their wrecked car, the photographers continued to take pictures. The critically injured Diana was reported to repeatedly murmur the words, "oh my God", and after the photographers were pushed away by emergency teams, the words "leave me alone".

Supplemental Restraint System: James Dean Imprint - Frontal Passenger. [Reclaimed Deployed Airbag]
850 Dernier Nylon, waterbased printing ink, thread.
Bethany Shorb, 2010
Actor JAMES DEAN was a race car aficionado killed in a September 30, 1955 highway crash in his new car, a Porsche 550 Spyder. While traveling to a race in Salinas, California Dean and a passenger crashed head-on into a second car; the passenger was thrown clear and survived, but Dean died almost immediately. Dean was just 24 years old, and his untimely death helped make him into a pop-culture legend. Along with his tragic death at such a young age, he is often considered an icon due to his "experimental" take on life, which included his ambivalent sexuality.
When Dean introduced himself to fellow Actor Alec Guinness outside a restaurant, he asked him to take a look at the Spyder. Guinness thought the car appeared 'sinister' and told Dean: 'If you get in that car, you will be found dead in it by this time next week.' This encounter took place on September 23, 1955, seven days before Dean's death.
Since Dean's death, a legend has arisen that his Porsche 550 Spyder was "cursed" and supposedly injured or killed several others in the years following his death.

A truly beautiful view, how I would love to walk along this road on such an autumn day.
John Bathgate works from his studio at Roskhill, just south of Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye.
A borderer by birth his love of the rugged and wilder country of Scotland's north west saw him move to Skye in 1992 and it is this landscape which inspires his work.
In 1980 John went full time as an artist and a year later an Edinburgh publishing company began to produce prints and limited editions of his work. Moving to Haddington, in East Lothian, he renovated an old mill house and worked from there. He exhibited widely in group and one-man shows all over Scotland. All this time he was constantly journeying north to the Highlands and eventually he made the move to Borve on Skye.
Now, in the north of the island, he looks out on Loch Braccadale with views south to Rhum and Canna and the Skye Cuillin and north to the strange flat topped hills known as "McLeod's Tables". He says, "It's the quality of light here and the constantly changing weather, I could paint the view from my window a hundred times and each would be different". With the Roskhill studio established and new limited edition giclee prints produced, he is looking forward to a productive painting year.
John works in various media and likes to explore ways of applying paint and collage to create his interpretations of the elements that shape the Scottish landscape. He works with waterbased media which allows a flow of ideas, from thin layered washes to thickly applied acrylic with collage integrated into the paint. Work in oils has begun to feature again and some very effective images are produced with use of collage alone.
Most of his ideas are gleaned from walking in the landscape recording details in sketchbooks, drawing in pencil and watercolour crayons to give a "loose, washy account of my ramblings". It may be a panoramic view, or a cluster of trees and houses, often it is smaller details like drystone dykes or a tangle of seaweed on rocks. Back in the studio he can concentrate on the paintings without the difficulty of the elements, a necessity in a highland environment. On occasions some images arrive on their own with no preliminary drawings or at times when an accumulation of work starts a flow of ideas. As he says himself, "I like to have an open mind and try any new ideas that come my way, I am always learning".

I'm trying to find a good way to paint the scalp... experimented on acrylic paints for years and it's always tacky!!! UGGG!!!
But in all honesty the factory scalp paint is a bit tacky too. I've read on the TIB threads that SEM (auto interior paints) work... they are meant for vinyl repairs... I didn't try those.
Yes I used Sharpies, just for experiment sake, don't do it at home kids!
Best result was with a paint marker... it wasn't tacky, but could be rubbed off. I tried to spray a sealer/fixative on the scalp afterwards, but the spray made it tacky. I tried a new kind of Paint Marker made by Sharpie (OIL BASED): www.sharpie.com/enUS/Product/Sharpie_Oil-Based_Paint_Mark... Here is Shershe's result: www.flickr.com/photos/shershe/3415516498/
I haven't tried the waterbased one... but I'm thinking it might wash out vs. oil base with is more permanent. It's not the same formula as the "Sharpies" we think of... So far I like it the best. Takes a lot more rubbing for the paint to come off... maybe if I let it cure a few days it'll be hardier. I'll upload a pic of the Sharpie Paint Marker soon. They also come in lots of colors
Oh and a BIG THANK YOU to Devout Dolls for the donated victim scalp :)
I bought two unfinished water based oil paintings home from Newzealand, the bouquet and this.Today I think I have laid this one to rest unless I spot something before it's varnished.
On arriving in Newzealand where we went to escape the British winter I had to begin painting after quite a break,I always find this difficult and decided to do some local landscapes. This is the end of the runway of the small airport at Raumati beach. The grass is long and has lovely pink seeding grasses. In the foreground is a ditch with many wild flowers and the iniquitous gorse growing in it.
I have tried to catch the strange characteristic shapes of the hills and the glowing light. Again it's a stiffer style than I wanted but it served to get me started.
