Supplemental Restraint System: James Dean III - Frontal Passenger. [Reclaimed Deployed Airbag]

850 Dernier Nylon, waterbased printing ink, thread, polyfil.

Bethany Shorb, 2010

Actor JAMES DEAN was a race car aficionado killed in a September 30, 1955 highway crash in his new car, a Porsche 550 Spyder. While traveling to a race in Salinas, California Dean and a passenger crashed head-on into a second car; the passenger was thrown clear and survived, but Dean died almost immediately. Dean was just 24 years old, and his untimely death helped make him into a pop-culture legend. Along with his tragic death at such a young age, he is often considered an icon due to his "experimental" take on life, which included his ambivalent sexuality.

When Dean introduced himself to fellow Actor Alec Guinness outside a restaurant, he asked him to take a look at the Spyder. Guinness thought the car appeared 'sinister' and told Dean: 'If you get in that car, you will be found dead in it by this time next week.' This encounter took place on September 23, 1955, seven days before Dean's death.

Since Dean's death, a legend has arisen that his Porsche 550 Spyder was "cursed" and supposedly injured or killed several others in the years following his death.

A trailblazer of 20th-century dance, ISADORA DUNCAN also had a reputation for eccentric flair in her wardrobe, frequently adorning herself with long flowing scarves and Grecian-inspired robes. In the autumn of 1927 she climbed into her sporty new Amilcar automobile (though much lore states it was her Bugatti) while wearing an immense, iridescent flowing silk scarf. Duncan was the passenger of her handsome French-Italian mechanic, Benoît Falchetto. As the driver put the car in motion, Duncan's scarf got tangled in the car's rear wheel spokes and jerked tight, snapping her neck and instantly strangling her.

Before getting into the car, she reportedly said to her friend Mary Desti and some companions, "Adieu, mes amis. Je vais à la gloire!" (Goodbye, my friends, I am off to glory!). However, according to American novelist Glenway Wescott, who was in Nice at the time and visited Duncan's body in the morgue, Desti admitted that she had lied about Duncan's last words.

Instead she told Wescott, Duncan said, "Je vais à l'amour" (I am off to love). Desti considered this too embarrassing to be recorded as the dance legend's last words, especially as it suggested that Duncan hoped that she and Falchetto were going to her hotel for a sexual assignation.

Twofold is a series of folding furniture with a dual function. When the furniture is not being used, they hang on the wall as two-dimensional compositions. The pieces can be removed from the frame, unfolded, and used as functional objects. After use, the furniture is stored on the wall in its frame. Utilizing folding

elements such as hinges, bungee cord and other structural principles, the pieces transform with ease in one fluid motion. The interactive aspect of these forms creates an awareness of how furniture performs within our personal space and its importance in daily routine as an extension of the body. The graphic images transform from a representation of an origami object in mid-fold on the outer surface to a completed representation of an origami object on the inner surface. The origami graphics symbolize a two-dimensional

surface that folds into a three-dimensional object. These graphics echo the process of the folding furniture while it’s being transformed. Like origami, the folding process involves effortless hand manipulation to fold the material into its intended form

In addition to origami, the inspiration for this work originates from nomadic living in small apartments, resulting in the continual reorganization of my own personal space. I am passionate about environmental conservation; I choose to take up less space and create less waste in my personal life and in the work I create. My furniture is designed in a CAD-based program, laser cut out of sheets of sustainably harvested

plywood with minimal material waste, assembled using eco-friendly adhesive, and sealed with waterbased

finishes. The flat-pack aspect of the work suits a mobile lifestyle for those who move frequently while reducing the cost and pollution associated with shipping and relocating. The compact nature of the work provides more open space and promotes an efficient use of a small living environment. This allows a small space to be in constant flux; transforming from one activity to the next throughout the day as furniture is taken off the wall, used, and put back into its frame.

When grouped together, these pieces establish a transformative personal space that becomes a fluid extension of the body, creating a ritual performance of efficiency that diffuses into one’s lifestyle.

Supplemental Restraint System: Princess Di(e) II - Rear Passenger. [Reclaimed Deployed Airbag]

Bethany Shorb, 2010

On August 31 1997, DIANA PRINCESS OF WALES died as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident in the Pont de l'Alma road tunnel in Paris, France while speeding to escape paparazzi. Her companion, Dodi Fayed and driver, Henri Paul, were also pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Fayed's bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, was the only survivor. An eighteen-month French judicial investigation concluded in 1999 that the car crash that killed Diana was caused by her chauffeur Paul, who lost control of the car at high speed while intoxicated and under the influence of antidepressants.

The two forward passengers' airbags had functioned normally. None of the car's occupants were wearing seat belts.

As the casualties lay seriously injured or dead in their wrecked car, the photographers continued to take pictures. The critically injured Diana was reported to repeatedly murmur the words, "oh my God", and after the photographers were pushed away by emergency teams, the words "leave me alone".
