A silver cup with relief decoration of homoerotic scenes, this object takes its name from its first owner in modern times, the art-lover and collector Edward Perry Warren (1860-1928).

After Warren's death the cup remained in private hands, largely because of the nature of the subject matter. Only with changing attitudes in the 1980s was the cup exhibited to the public, and in 1999 the British Museum was able to give this important piece a permanent home in the public domain.

The cup was originally made up of five parts - the thin-walled bowl with its high relief scenes, raised by hammering; an inner liner of thicker sheet silver with a solid rim, which would have made both drinking and cleaning easier; a pair of handles (now lost) and a cast foot soldered to the base.

The scenes on each side show two pairs of male lovers. On one side the erastes (older, active lover) is bearded and wears a wreath while the eromenos (younger 'beloved', passive) is a beardless youth. A servant tentatively comes through a door. In the background is a draped textile, and a kithara (lyre) resting on a chest.

In the scene on the other side the erastes is beardless, while the eromenos is just a boy. Auloi (pipes) are suspended over the background textile, and folded textiles are lying on a chest. The surroundings suggest a cultured, Hellenized setting with music and entertainment.

Representations of sexual acts are widely found in Roman art, on glass and pottery vessels, terracotta lamps and wall-paintings in both public and private buildings. They were thus commonly seen by both sexes, and all sections of society.

The Romans had no concept of, or word for, homosexuality, while in the Greek world the partnering of older men with youths was an accepted element of education. The Warren Cup reflects the customs and attitudes of this historical context, and provides us with an important insight into the culture that made and used it.

Well in that Busy Wednesday we eventually arrived at Warren Point. It was a bit blustery but pleasant, although rain threatened from time to time. It had been a busy but enjoyable day which was to round off with a wonderful meal. More of that later.

Made this shot early november in Warren Ohio. The sun nice, warm and low.

Talk about irony, Kmart literally announced today that the Warren, PA location is closing December 7. Sad, but at the same time this isn't too surprising either. A big thanks goes out to wachovia_138 for letting me know about this.

I should of known by the signs that this store gave during my Sept 12 visit. The empty seasonal dept. and the untouched pantry area should of given me an alarm, but I guess I wasn't thinking about it.

Apparently this store had a lease through late next year, but for some reason it was decided to close it anyway. The owner of the mall tried to talk them out of it, but Kmart (Sears Holdings) wouldn't change their mind.

I hope to visit this store at least once again during its closing sale before it shuts down completely, but I may be able to go a second time if all goes well. At this point, I'm likely to only go once.

I'd say the Warren Mall is toast, but according to the same article that tells about this store's closing, a new tenant is coming to the old Big Lots. So the Warren Mall isn't completely hopeless, yet....

One of the jobs I've been the most worried about in clearing out my dad's apartment has been sorting through and getting rid of his books. He had a lot of books. A lot. And not one of the used book dealers I'd called had returned my call. I took that to be a very bad sign.

A dear friend of mine in DC had just stumbled upon a huge used book store and suggested I call them. I left a message, feeling very pessimistic, but lo and behold -- a call back! And a date for Warren to come and look over the books.

Warren was the dream used book dealer. He went through the boxes of musty fusty books and oohed and aahed over them. He looked longingly at the antiquarian books, but understood they were hands off. I'm keeping those. He appreciated the valiant effort I made in putting all the boxes on a single level so that he'd have easier access to them. And in the end, he offered me a fair price -- a pittance, but fair -- to take all the books away. All 100 boxes of them.

Warren told me he's been working in bookstores since he was in high school. He worked for B. Dalton. After he left, they went out of business. He worked for Brentano's. After he left, they went out of business. But no, he never worked for Borders, so he can't be held responsible for their going out of business.

Thank you, Warren, for making a painful job easier. Warren is #53 in my 100 Strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at www.100strangers.com.

I haven't uploaded to Flickr in months! In fact it feels like a lifetime! Its been a somewhat bumper year with very little time to blog or upload etc hopefully i'll make a little more time next year. Anyway, here's a image from a recent shoot I did with local boy Warren. Thanks for looking!
