This building was built by Safeway back in the early 80's they operated it until spinning off the Houston division as "Apple Tree Market" in 1991. Apple Tree operated this location for 2 years until it was sold to Rice Food Markets. Rice ran the store until 2012, when it was sold to The Fresh Market which only lasted a few months. Walgreens moved in in the beginning of 2015. Some original Safeway elements do still exist on the outside. The arched overhang is original, along with the protruding entryway. The doors were originally on the sides of the entryway with the Courtesy desk sitting about where the entrance is now. The space was originally much larger when Safeway, Apple Tree, and Rice were tenants. With the arched overhang extending the full length of the building. Under The Fresh Market the space was subdivided and fully remodeled. Under Rice many original Safeway elements existed in the store. Such as centrally located open air fridges which had been re purposed as Wine and Cheese Storage. The produce cases were also original to Safeway and Rice utilized the original plastic stands which clipped onto the cases to provide extra space. The original loading bays from Safeway are still used by Walgreens although one now holds a dumpster as the original location for the dumpster is now used as an Ambulance Entrance by an Urgent Care who is leasing the subdivided space. Due to the small size of this location there is no pharmacy drive-thru.

Was disappointed that some lights were out on the building but glad some reflections were on the wet streets. On Canal Street in New Orleans, Louisiana. Posted one similar to this not too long ago - it's subject was the lights on the building but this one is the light in the street. This store was opened in 1938 and was the 500th store in the chain. Found too that Walgreen's 6000th store was opened in New Orleans back in 2007.

Walgreens #12324 1595 Opossumtown Pike Frederick, MD

Store #11096, 1100 W. Main St; opened in 2008 a block away from a busy CVS, with a Rite Aid relocating close by to 1400 W. Main around the same time. The store was also open 24 hours at first like the CVS nearby, but they went to regular hours after only about a month. Was never quite able to take enough business away from the other two chains, and closed in October 2019.

JOLIET, ILLINOIS / UNITED STATES - DECEMBER 31, 2015: People fill prescriptions and shop during the night of New Year's Eve at the Walgreens Pharmacy in Joliet.

I liked finding an older-style Walgreens store; there aren't many in Chicago. And I bought a Kenosha postcard and Milwaukee winter hat here.

this store did last for several years longer, than I thought it would. this was at one time the only Walgreens in my neighborhood growing up, so I'll always have my many memories of this store over the years.

This store - located on Flagler Street and 2nd Avenue, was opened to the public October 2, 1937. One of the most complete drug-department stores in the entire country, it has a basement in which there is a beautiful Tear Room. On the double deck balcony a Cafeteria. Of the 500 Walgreen stores, this is the most elaborate.

I always wondered how old the black and white(vs. the regular red and white signs Walgreens uses today) prescription sign was, on this building? it interestingly had its entrance turnstyle removed some years back, though(do recall going to another store in 2011, where it was still at the entrance).

2020 update: MUCH later on, I learned Dominick's used to be in this smaller space for their grocery store. Which of course, was likely before I was born in 1982. They relocated south of here to a bigger space just south of Glenlake and Broadway(maybe in the 1960s? hope to find a year later on), and since Dominick's shuttered all stores(around 2013), Whole Foods took over that space(I think in 2015?). Walgreens has since torn down this building, and built a bigger store in the space this smaller store, the dry cleaners, African food store(on the Broadway Ave side of the building, north of Payless), and a Payless Shoes store sat on.

In the future I'll take a photo of the new Walgreens that now sits in this space, and post a picture of it here.

After being closed for years, this old Walgreens in Murrieta has reopened as a Dollar Tree, sadly we are just driving by and have no time to stop to check it out but it's nice to see new retail opening up, also across the road where Costco is being built there's rumor that Aldi will be joining that center!

919 West Mercury Boulevard, Hampton, VA

This location opened on September 11th, 1998.

The store was built on site of two older stores: one was originally a 7,500 square foot Robert Hall clothing store, which opened on September 8th, 1955 and closed in August 1976. Stores that operated out of the building afterwards are:

*Baby Fair (July 9th, 1987-January 1988)

*Tanks-A-Lot (February 1988-1991)

*Party City (February 1993-January 1998)

The other store was originally a 6,000 square foot Thom McAn shoe store, which opened in October 1960 and closed in the mid 1960s. That store later became:

*Stringfellow Electric (May 2nd, 1967-1970)

*Fass Brothers Fish House (August 1970-February 1976)

*The Family Fish House (February 1976-spring 1983)
