The Highland Square area is what sociologists call a 'food desert'. There's nowhere to buy fresh vegetables, fruit or meat within walking distance.
The joke around here is that Walgreens has everything you need - as long as it's beer.
I don't drink and I don't play carnival games. I'm a cranky old bastard who wants a fresh piece of chicken and a store I can walk around in that isn't so crowded with vendor displays that the isles have to be one-way.

Walgreens was heavily damaged and as of Friday was closed. Disaster teams were working to get the store open again.

Although it must be fairly old at this point, the Downtown Walgreens actually uses good urban design principles unlike some chain drug stores in Memphis.

Store 2167, Roxbury Mall, 275 Rt. 10; opened approx. 92 with the newly built section of this shopping center, including a Caldor around the corner (now Kohl's). Closed in the mid 00s, having been replaced by a new store down the road in Ledgewood. Currently a Planet Fitness.
As of August 1st of this year, this store was closed, and it was torn down in September. the 3 adjoining stores(dry cleaners, a Payless Shoe Source, and an African food store on the Broadway Ave side) moved out, a few months before this Walgreens finally closed. a new standalone Walgreens(sans adjoining strip mall tenants, per the standalone store direction Walgreens has increasingly been going) is under construction.
2020 update: MUCH later on, I learned Dominick's used to be in this smaller space for their grocery store. Which of course, was likely before I was born in 1982. They relocated south of here to a bigger space just south of Glenlake and Broadway(maybe in the 1960s? hope to find a year later on), and since Dominick's shuttered all stores(around 2013), Whole Foods took over that space(I think in 2015?). Walgreens has since torn down this building, and built a bigger store in the space this smaller store, the dry cleaners, African food store(on the Broadway Ave side of the building, north of Payless), and a Payless Shoes store sat on.
In the future I'll take a photo of the new Walgreens that now sits in this space, and post a picture of it here.
Elmore Pharmacy located at 401 Walnut St. in Red Bluff,CA. This store was a Walgreen Agency up until the late 1960's and has since been full independent. Walgeen Agency stores were along the lines of Rexall Drug Stores where Rexall supplied many of the products but the name of the store included the Rexall name "Johns Rexall" or "Toms Walgeen Agency". Very few Walgeen Agency signs remain compared to the number of Rexall signs still out there. This is largely because Walgeens did not fully enforce the owners to have the Walgeen Agency signs unlike Rexall requiring it.
