17422 Richmond Road, Callao, VA

This location opened in 2019; it was previously Rite Aid #7763, which opened in 2005. The building itself was constructed in 1998, presumably as an independent pharmacy that Rite Aid bought out.

Originally revealed in 2021 and made up of three distinct areas centered on the intersection of N. LaSalle Street and W. North Avenue, developer Fern Hill has offered updated plans. Fern Hill has tapped architect David Adjaye and local firm GREC Architects to work on its design, though those plans have yet to be made public.

The wedge-shaped block anchored by the historic Moody Church Auditorium and flanked by two gas stations will become the cultural heart of the development. The gas stations (Shell at 130 W. North Ave. and BP at 1674 N. LaSalle Dr.) would be removed and replaced with new commercial structures, which won’t rise taller than the auditorium to preserve the neighborhood context.

NOTE: Developer Fern Hill announced plans in September 2023 for a new, 395-foot, 500-unit tower at the northwest corner of W. North Avenue and N. LaSalle Drive, which is currently a surface parking lot. It will be designed by architects GREC, a Chicago-based firm that took over after architect David Adjaye stepped away from the project amid sexual misconduct accusations at his firm. The building will have two ground-floor retail shops, including Walgreens, which will remain but be redeveloped with a modern design and smaller footprint. Rather than the opaque brick facade that currently exists along North Avenue, the store would have glass windows, and the height would also be scaled down to be in line with the buildings to the north and south. Other proposed changes include the expansion of Moody Church’s campus on the lots that currently house the BP and Shell gas stations, as well as an overhaul of the former Treasure Island on N. LaSalle Street. Moody’s expansion would include a new chapel and new buildings for its administrative offices and educational spaces.

NOTE 2: Plans have been announced for the former Treasure Island in December 2023. It will be restored and receive a new red brick facade with added arches and awnings to better fit the overall development’s style. Once that is complete, the space will be divided into two large commercial spaces, one a temporary Walgreens as it relocates from the street corner. The other half will go to local grocer Commissary Market. However, the developer stated if they are able to find a large singular tenant for the building, Commissary Market may move with Walgreens to the base of the new Canvas tower. That tower at 1610 N. LaSalle St. will eventually rise 36 stories and 395 feet with a multi-colored metal and glass façade and include500 residential units and 14,000 square-feet of commercial space split into two spaces.

NOTE 3: Updated details have been revealed once again for Old Town Canvas at 1610 N LaSalle Dr. The proposal has been in the works for nearly three years; The structure is being developed by Fern Hill with design firm GREC Architects. The tower will replace the existing Walgreens and adjacent parking lot. The original proposal included a blue-toned façade, which has been replaced by a brown-tone gradient along with a brick podium that will reutilize the ornate lamps from the old Walgreens. After multiple complaints from surrounding neighbors on sightlines, mainly coming from one adjacent tower with a similar height, the proposal has kept the unit count at 500 while the tower has grown from 36 to 44 stories and from 395 to 480 feet in height, The ground floor will eventually feature a relocated Walgreens, along with an additional retail space. The adjacent Treasure Island building will be redeveloped to temporarily hold the Walgreens and a market.

Well, I guess this is it. I don't know of anymore ways to photograph it. I know you want more Walgreens, but, really, I must move on. Maybe I will update it annually. That would be a nice touch.

Walgreens #17288 (closed) [9,119 square feet]

540 NC-9 Highway, Black Mountain, NC

Opened in 2018, closed/relocated in spring 2020; originally 1981-built Eckerd, became Rite Aid in fall 2007

The Walgreen's that time forgot. Walgreen's opened its 14,090-square-foot Belmont, CA drugstore, at 900 Ralston Ave, in August 1973. Except for a slight facade update and new signage that came with a minor renovation to the shopping center in the 2000s, this Walgreen's is virtually a time capsule. The ceiling tiles, floor tiles, and even the lighting in the pharmacy have all remained original. This is really surprising, when you consider that Walgreen's added new floor tiles to most of their drugstores in the 1980s and '90s. And during remodels in the 2010s, even Walgreen's built as recently as the 1990s had their suspended ceiling tiles replaced. This store somehow managed to dodge all of this, and remains a welcome reprieve from the sterile modern look you find at 99% of Walgreen's today.

I'm guessing that there was originally a "Walgreens" sign just above the entrance doors. You can see where the square recessed incandescent lights above the entrance used to be, which would have looked like these:

Closed 2023.

The pharmacy section of the store, which is still in the back left, but has the actual pharmacy even more hidden than before. The drop off and pick up areas are still the same, but there are now touch screens that appear to let the customer check on the status of their prescription. There's also a much larger waiting area with a TV, although unlike at Rite Aid it appears to just show ads.
