VIA No. 2 is right on time, and it's making me wish I were aboard enjoying an early morning cup of coffee and a rolling view of Canada's prairies west of Landis, Sask., on July 14, 2016. I've held back on this photo for just over 2 years, but after being upstaged by a certain train dispatcher who shall remain nameless one too many times, I could not miss the opportunity for a one-up.

This isn't a new composition of "Vasco da Gama" bridge, but... who doesn't want to do the classics?

Butterfly kisses in the morning from my daughter, she always awakens with a smile.

With CSX's Dash 8 fleet being purged from the roster once again, this time likely for good, I made a spontaneous trip over to the Fitzgerald Sub to hunt down local job L738, which is currently operating with an endangered C40-8W and C40-9W pair, both in YN2 paint. Based out of Fitzgerald, Georgia, the pair (plus an ES44AH that thankfully trailed last) shot down to Waycross and back through the Georgia farmland, affording me what may well be my last view of CSX Dash 8s doing what they were built to do. Here, at the first shot of the chase, CSXT 7894, 9039 and 3101 chug out of Fitzgerald in some stellar morning sun.

Flickr Friday: Wake Up

The title refers to the song "It's 5 am, Paris Wakes Up" by Jacques Dutronc.

at some point humankind will realize, we can't go on like this without destoying the branch we are sitting on, also figuratively. The question is, how many wakeup calls we need.

Taken the morning after sitting out the eye of Hurricane Ian in Cape Coral, Florida. Mentally, today feels just like then....

We have been very fortunate here in Virginia to have had the Amtrak 50th Anniversary units around multiple times. Far and away my favorite of these locomotives is the 160 "Pepsi Can". I knew due to the rotation and sightings south that it was leading Amtrak 80 back into Virginia on Sunday morning. As I checked the Amtrak app Saturday evening, I saw they were already running behind, which is what I needed for a daylight run on the northern end of the RF&P. The moody Sunday morning highlighted this sharp scheme well, and I was thrilled with the scene as 80 crossed over Powell's Creek in Neabsco, Virginia. This was well worth my 5 AM wakeup call, and the extra cup of coffee.

Dawar village, ensconced deep into Kashmir's far-flung Gurez Valley, wakes up to ethereal dawn. God's presence hasn't yet been proved but there is ample evidence of Godliness around; it just needs us to wakeup at Ungodly hours to witness it! 😃

This shot required another 4am wakeup this Saturday morning, but "ya can't hit a home-run if ya don't swing the bat", right!?

I arrived at the Marin headlands, and noticed that this was one of the clearest, fog-free mornings I've experienced here, so I wanted to make a composition that included the lights of the city and distant Bay Bridge. Granted, I've only been here a handful of times, but it seemed pretty clean and clear with a some good cloud movement above. The clouds on the top portion of this photo didn't last long, so this is the only shot with those wispy-looking clouds up there. The city lights really do some magic theatrical lighting on the low clouds!

I had a great blue hour (pre-sunrise) shoot , but the sunrise was pretty much non-existent, as this area clouded-in just a short while after I shot this image. I also shot one with a freighter heading out to sea, which has a cool streak of lights (boat lights) from the bay to the ocean. I might post that at another time.

I kept my ISO at 50 for this shot to have a longer exposure for the cloud movement, and a semi-wide aperture to keep things sharp. I was on the side of a steep hill shooting this, so the foreground wasn't in play, and there wasn't enough light to illuminate it anyway. I really liked the silhouette created by the shorline, and made sure to keep my elevation and include the little rock-island in the lower left in the shot (That's why I was on the side of a steep hill shooting this!).

Comments and criticism are welcome on any of my photos!

"Children wake up,

hold your mistake up,

before they turn the summer into dust.

If the children don’t grow up,

our bodies get bigger but our hearts get torn up.

We’re just a million little god’s causin rain storms turnin’ every good thing to rust."

PN intermodal 6MS2 is seen slowly arriving into Unanderra with NR102, NR29 “Indian Pacific” & NR108, after a quick crew change, the train left to finish the last leg of the journey to Sydney. 6MS2 was diverted via the South Coast Line due to trackwork on the Southern Highlands line - 11/11/2023

Once I wake up very early in the morning, I've been somewhere above the sky when having a look out of the window. You've should see this in real life, this was an amazing experience.
