These townhomes on the north side of Prince Street, near the Potomac River, were built by wealthy sea captains in the late 1700s. Local lore says the original cobblestones paving the street were brought over from England in ships as ballast. Captured Hessians, the German mercenaries hired to fight for the British during the Revolutionary War, are said to have laid the cobblestones. Notice that each house has cellar doors in front and the one on the right has a door to an alleyway.
The tall building at the far right is the back of the Norman Fitzhugh Warehouse, built in 1827 after a huge fire consumed many of the commercial buildings on the waterfront.
