The Gaudi staircase at the Sagrada Familia is a monument to human achievement. Look how each stair aligns directly with the one beneath it. By Mark Higham. You can find my full set of Barcelona photos at markhigham.500px.com or reach me at mark@mhigham.co.uk

Dark the path camouflaged by bright colors

Omen of occult secrets

The push towards the end of the path

It seems inevitable

It is useless to resist

I will go down there with my heart racing

From dull uncontrollable beats

The fear is as strong as the curiosity to discover

What could be down there

Maybe just a dream or a hallucination

But stopping now without knowing

It is not possible…

Recently the field of theoretical cosmology has been enervated by the suggestion that our universe is the mirror image of another one stretching back in time before the Big Bang (see, for example, www.research.ed.ac.uk/en/publications/icpti-symmetric-uni... ).

Intrigued, I set out to test whether this was observable in practice. After a quick calculation on the back of an old envelope (cigarette packets now being not Politically Correct) I worked out that conditions would be favourable for an experiment in the period around the vernal equinox for my latitude (51N). At this time the angles of the Earth’s gravitational field, the neutrino flux from the sun and a local EM field could be arranged to the optimum.

So, setting a sufficiently powerful Tesla coil in a glass envelope with an inert gas (I used Nitrogen), I tried it out.

And it worked!

Sometimes I could actually see the dim reflection of the alternate universe appear in the glass capsule, but perhaps the best result was this one where I managed to create a wormhole bridging the paired universes.

If you look carefully at the image though you might observe that the energetic feedback created by the wormhole burnt out my coil… such are the sacrifices of science…

---

Storytelling idiocy aside, this image was one of the fun results of an evening spent with a local friendly group of photographers taking images of lightbulbs on tablets (and other things but I didn’t get that far :( ).

I used a clear glass bulb on my iPaddle which I set up to show some very colourful graphic images that I had generated using Midjourney (I finally found something useful to do with that toybox… The text prompt for this one, if you are interested, was ‘Close - up macro HDR photograph of the centre of mirrored 3D circle sculptures, overlapping rainbow circular fractal, vivid rainbow colours, graphic abstract’).

The bulb was lying on its side at an angle resting on the bayonet fitting so I made the canvas larger and rotated it. Starting in Capture One I dropped the greys to black using a levels adjustment and played with the Clarity and a little Dehaze. In Affinity I sharpened it with High Pass/Linear blend and a bit of Unsharp mask and enriched the colour. Then quite a lot of work with inpainting to remove the vestiges of the iPad and a lot of dust.

PS I forgot to mention that this was a focus stack of ten images, though I suspect only four or five contributed anything useful. The camera did the focusing and I used Helicon Focus for the stacking, which I've not really done before (it was fast, worked with raws and produced a dng output).

Thanks for taking the time to look. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Easter and 100x :)

I have heard about this wormhole right in the the heart of Copenhagen… So I have had no choice… I have had to go there and shoot it ;)

Well… the metro system in Copenhagen is run by automatic guided vehicles. So you can have the view which usually the driver has and a long exposure creates this wormhole-like look… but specially in those bends it’s a little unsteady. That makes it a bit difficult to shoot.

That's where the worms go when the Robins are in town!

Taken this past Spring, American Robins are pretty thick around here then, and they make really good portrait subjects. 📷

WIT: Here is my take - a slinky that frames its own path. With the camera on a tripod, I taped one end on the table, and then with one hand twisted it to the shape I liked in camera and shot with the other hand. In post, just adjust the colour slightly and cropped.

Designed for convivial, shared experiences, Wellington Market embraces a quintessential sense of joyous chaos.

Affectionately referred to as The Wormhole, this recently completed red portal connects the east and west dining areas, introducing a resetting sensorial experience between food and retail spaces.

A long exposure on a small cascade in the river at Dean Castle, Kilmarnock.

How long did this tree lie on the ground with its bark protecting it. how long have the little creatures been making these canals under the bark? How long has it been since someone removed the bark and left us with a really small work of art drawn on the trunk of a tree. The micro world is here to brighten our day.

This is St Hugh's Choir in Lincoln Cathedral, England. At least, it's how I imagine it would look if it were being sucked through a wormhole :)

St Hugh's Choir is a church within a church - one of the oldest parts of the building. Construction of the cathedral started in 1072 and continued in several phases throughout the High Middle Ages. It is the fourth largest cathedral in the UK (in floor area) at around 5,000 square metres (54,000 sq ft), after Liverpool, London St Paul's and York Minster. Like many of the medieval cathedrals of England it was built in the Early Gothic style.

One major architectural feature of Lincoln Cathedral is the range of spectacular vaults. There are several different kinds of vaults that differ between the nave, aisles, choir, and chapels. Saint Hugh's Choir exhibits extremely unusual vaults (annotated on the photo). It is a series of asymmetrical vaults that appear to almost be a diagonal line created by two ribs on one side translating into only a single rib on the other side of the vault. This pattern divides up the space of the vaults and bays, perfectly placing the emphasis on the bays. Each separate area of Lincoln Cathedral can be identified solely by the different vaults of the space.

Also shown in the photo is the cathedra - the Bishop's throne - which is the seat of the Bishop of Lincoln. A church becomes a cathedral when the Bishop's official cathedra is installed.

A white serene staircase from Munich

Scientists, and an IRC Agent, kidnapped by a diabolical hand that reached out of the skies of Hypatia, and the possibility of a spy in the IRC working for a hostile alien force summons Captain Debris Jetsam and

Major Scrumptious Sky to the Stonehenge Intergalactic Spacefort from their shore leave in the Carousel Corona.

CDJ: (seated at a conference table with Scrummy & Plush) Plush, I haven't been able to get anything out of Scrummy about this Plicare experiment, but I can tell she knows something. Can you explain it to me?

PT: Sorry, Pips, it's above your security clearance.

CDJ: But not Scrummy's? How is that possible?

PT: You know Aquarians, Pips. They don't keep secrets from each other, and there are Aquarians working on the experiment.

MSS: What one knows, all know, in the "fluid mind." (just then, the door slides open and Director Steadfast enters)

CDJ: (to MSS) He just saved you from being tickled into spilling some of that fluid mind information. (grins as MSS' eyebrows shoot up in alarm) Good to see you, Director.

DS: You too, Debris, Scrumptious, Plush.

MSS: Very good to see you, Director. (fairly purrs) Love the new look.

DS: (sits near Plush, clearing his throat) Plush, were they briefed about the kidnapping?

PT: Yes, sir.

DS: First, note in the Stonehenge log that I am upgrading Captain Jetsam's security clearance to Factor Six-Nine.

CDJ: Nice. (gets a glance from DS) I mean, nice, sir.

PT: Logged.

DS: A team of scientists were sent to Hypatia to work on increasing the capacity of the vermisforamen currently in use.

PT: Being able to vee more than 7 tons at a time would be a boon to the shipping industry.

CDJ: And planetary defense.

DS: An accidental discovery, code named, Plicare, would surpass the perfection of the tachyon field.

(CDJ and PT stare at each other, thunderstruck by this statement.)

MSS: (smiles at DS) Our people had beards, in our distant past. Not anymore. It gives you such a -- primal aspect. I like it.

CDJ: (saving DS from MSS' flirtations) How would increasing the vee's capacity do that?

DS: Plicare wouldn't increase the vee's capacity, it would increase travel velocity.

MSS: Actually, it would decrease velocity, but increase distance and lower time.

PT/CDJ: What?

DS: Scrumptious is right. Plicare isn't a speed, it's about using wormholes to fold space. If the Plicare experiment succeeds, travel between planets could take as little time as it takes to step across a line drawn in the sand.

CDJ: Plush, I'm going to ask you to pick up the pieces of my mind, that were just blown all over the spacefort.

PT: Right there, with you.

DS: Naturally, we scattered the scientists, and had each working on specific aspects of the experiment. Their locations have been under strict secrecy and security. This was the first time they'd been brought together, on Hypatia, to talk about assembling a prototype.

PT: How many people knew where they were meeting, and why?

DS: You're looking at him.

PT: That's not good.

CDJ: Well, you, and every Aquarian. No offense, Scrummy.

MSS: None taken, since we didn't know.

DS: She's right. We didn't tell any of the scientists where they were going, just that they were being relocated to more secure locations.

CDJ: But they found out eventually. When did they realize where they were, and why?

DS: The definitely knew once they reached landfall on Hypatia, but it's possible they knew when they were in orbit. Either way, it was less than a day before their abduction.

PT: I hate to say it, but everyone must be looking at you, sir. (to DS)

DS: Of course, they are. So would I, if the roles were reversed.

CDJ: How many Aquarians were kidnapped?

DS: Only one. Once the hand grabbed him, the others instantly knew the danger, and concealed themselves.

MSS: (when CDJ eyes her) They had no defenses. Hiding made the most sense. They pulled others into hiding, as well.

CDJ: So, why don't you communicate with the Aquarian scientist? Ask him where they are?

MSS: Turgis Infigo is sleeping. He has slept since the hand lifted him from Hypatia.

DS: We don't know if that's because the kidnappers know about the "fluid mind" or if all of their victims are sleeping.

PT: Guarding sleeping prisoners is certainly easier than guarding conscious ones.

CDJ: What are our orders?

DS: Get to Hypatia. Talk to the scientists, Agent Rhoda, anybody you can think of. Search for a connection to the scientists' arrival and abduction. Whatever you find, do NOT report to me, or anyone else.

PT: Why?

DS: We probably have a spy in our midst, and I know my name is at the top of a very short list. You'll have to work on your own, and tell no one about Plicare.

CDJ: Except the scientist?

DS: Not even the scientists. I want them to think you're just looking into the abduction, that you have no idea what the special significance of these particular scientists is. (looks at MSS) Obviously, the Aquarians will know, we'll need them to pass along any information they come up with, to you, Scrumptious.

MSS: Yes, sir.

Abandoned Powerplant

A day of railway tunnels, well a few anyway, as we continued our walk through the Minenete Valley following an old railway form. This one was to be our last. I am not an engineer so there may well be a valid reason for this, but I am curious why the train line did go around the rock face.

When I visit a place for the first time, I always look for the wormholes. In astronomy these are the connectors to another universe. I found one behind a vegetables and fruit shop.
