Mordechai Vanunu (Hebrew: מרדכי ואנונו; born 14 October 1954) is a former Israeli nuclear technician who, citing his opposition to weapons of mass destruction, revealed details of Israel's nuclear weapons program to the British press in 1986. He was subsequently lured to Italy by a Mossad spy, where he was drugged and kidnapped by Israeli intelligence operatives. He was transported to Israel and ultimately convicted in a trial that was held behind close doors. Regarded by peace activists as a hero for taking a stand against weapons proliferation, Vanunu has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize many times.

On Saturday 5 February 2022, I went to meet and photograph some of the activists staging their weekly protest at Piccadilly Circus against the continued detention and extradition proceedings against whistleblower and dissident journalist Julian Assange.
( The photo - an activist with two placards at Piccadilly Circus. )
Nearly two weeks earlier on Monday 24 January, the High Court had made its decision regarding whether Julian Aaange' could request an appeal hearing on his extradition case at Britain's Supreme Court. As Julian Assange's fiancée, Stella Morris, left the building she smiled briefly, an immediate indication that there was at least some good news. She then gave a brief speech to a crowd of supporters and the press -
'Make no mistake,' she declared, 'We won today in court,' but then added, 'but let's not forget that every time we win, as long as this case is not dropped, as long as Julian is not freed, Julian continues to suffer.'
While Assange's defence team were granted the right to apply for a hearing at the Supreme Court, it will be up to Britain's highest court to decide whether to agree to consider his case. That decision on a possible Supreme Court hearing is expected sometime in the next two to three months.
Unfortunately, the remit of the appeal has been restricted to examining the United States' claimed legal promises on how Assange will be treated, rather than to the wider issues of freedom of speech, the CIA plot to assassinate him, the extent to which the evidence against him has obviously been fabricated or as to whether his treatment in Belmarsh Prison has amounted to torture.
On the last point, it is interesting to note that UN special rapporteur for torture, Nils Melzer, has already declared that the conditions Assange has been forced to endure at Belmarsh prison, including prolonged periods of solitary, constitute both arbitrary detention and torture.

A week after Britain's High Court decision Assange was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his fight for democracy by Martin Sonnenborn, a German MEP.

Whether Edward Snowden is a “hero” is up for debate, but what the NSA PRISM whistleblower did achieve is providing evidence which many have suspected—that the US government is mining valuable data on the Internet.
Big data analysis is nothing new—companies who provide free internet services have been doing this for years. Why did you think that Twitter has no advertising but manage to get so much venture capital investments? It is because it is very easy to decipher trending opinions on the web.
Google’s company tagline has always been “Don’t be evil”—mostly because the same technology that can be used for good can be used for evil. Mint.com uses big data to track consumer spending and financial status. Biomedical researchers can use big data to track virus outbreaks. United State government certainly can use big data to track anti-terrorism activities — but the real question is if they would not mine the data for other purposes also.
The other claims which Snowden made and enraged many Hong Kong citizens are evidence which points to US Government’s active hacking of local universities and businesses. Hacking for personal gain is definitely criminal. When the US pointed at China for cyber attacks, they have utilised the media on the side to paint an ugly picture of China, but pointing fingers first simply shows hypocrisy on the country’s own politics. And this fact provided ample ammunition for political activists world wide.

Now this is a guy who really deserves sympathy, Bradley Manning that is. He's the Wikileaks whistleblower who's currently languishing in an American military prison.
As for bloke holding up the placard, I could swear I once had a conversation with him in a Barcelona bar, but I didn't ask.
This was taken at Assange's balcony speech earlier today.
They said it would be confidential. They lied!
We're Here in the everyday.
Tripod-mounted & remote triggered shutter. One shot only folks! Whistle isolated in Photoshop & desaturation applied & also a tilt/shift blur effect.
Blow it all at Pelcomb Portraits.
Just as a reminder that Assange is still in there. The great Chris Hedges recently visited him and you can read about it here: www.truthdig.com/dig/item/the_death_of_truth_20130505/
Not all those coppers are out there everyday, only when he made his balcony speech.
Freedom of speech about safety and security in airline operations can be protected by filing a whistleblower complaint through AIR 21: The Wendell H. Ford Aviation Investment and Reform Act for the 21st Century. You do not need the approval of your union to report to the Feds punitive actions that your employer has taken against you for reporting safety or security issues. Shot in my hotel in Wroclaw, Poland at 1 o'clock in the morning with an iPad and later jacked up in Photoshop CS2. Note: if you want to republish this self-depricating image of me to promote a Libertarian notion of freedom of speech or whistleblower action that advances safety or security, then please keep my © symbol on the photo and proceed with my blessing.
Who was the whistleblower for the disaster?
Sweden. They detected the contamination, and that forced the Soviet authorities to open up about the disaster. [25] There's even a song about it: "Next to the hill you're on your tractor, across the way there's the reactor. If the Swedes hadn't've told, we'd be on the tractor, getting old." [15]
