What lies beneath the SeaView Fishing Pier is a reinforced network of wooden planks and supports used to hold off its ever charging adversary -- the Atlantic Ocean.
The SeaView fishing pier (unseen topside), is one of the longest piers in North Carolina. It stands an impressive 1,000 feet long, and was constructed as a sturdier replacement for Salty's Pier which was destroyed in 1996 by Hurricane Fran.
The pier offers visitors the opportunity to fish for king mackerel, flounder, blues, and Spanish mackerel in the surrounding waters, and is a landmark along North Topsail Beach.

Though I probably have more California Quail pictures than any other bird (except maybe the Black Phoebe or the Scrub Jay), this one's hard to forget. I was near Old Borges Ranch at the section of the East Bay Regional Park System reserved for preservation of quail, and the wind was buffeting me from all directions. I was about to give up on birds for the day, when I spotted this male overseeing his harem and at least 15 chicks. And he wasn't going to give up his post until they were all safely under coyote bushes, a favorite sanctuary if there are no farm buildings around.
Quail are not the brightest of birds. There was a Red-tail hawk overhead, giving his characteristic call. Any other bird would run for it, but while this quail kept an eye on the sky, it took him at least five minutes before he flew down to be with his (and others') familes. Btw, the Quail's real predator is the Cooper's Hawks, and Cooper's Hawks know exactly where to go to get a relatively easy lunch.
P.S. Quail prefer to run rather than fly. Their flight is in bursts and not terrible fast. In this respect, they're somewhat like the Roadrunner only a tenth as fast which is still pretty fast. They can, as we all know, outrun and out think a coyote, even one that owns shares in Acme Explosives!
I talked Peter into trying out this unique ride when we were in Durban, South Africa. He only sat for a photo which was quite expensive (a tourist trap), so I hate to think what it would have cost to go up and down the footpath. He got a fright when the man picked up the carriage as he said it felt like it was going to tip over, so I am glad I resisted the request to sit in it LOL.
"Albatross" (2011), by sculptor Klaudijus Pūdymas and architect Mindaugas Zabarauskas.
Near Klaipéda, Lithuania.
Elbstrand, Hamburg, Germany, 2017.
Went cycling today, starting in Hamburg port, then about 25 kilometers north, roughly following the river Elbe. While the first and the last shots are obviously within Hamburg, the middle one is only a few kilometers north of the city limits. What a change :-)

The icy waters of the Sound were slowly receding, softly singing a lullaby as it withdrew, "Return to your warm bed and rest your weary head. Only treachery lies ahead, one false move and you will be dead". I replied, "Thank you Winter waters for your song of concern. I will heed your wisdom". I slipped on my cleats and continued past the rocks still covered in moss and mud.

"What if a demon were to creep after you one day and say: 'This life which you live must be lived by you once again and innumerable times more; and every pain and joy and thought and sigh must come again to you, all in the same sequence. The eternal hourglass will again and again be turned and you with it, dust of the dust!' Would you throw yourself down and gnash your teeth and curse that demon? Or would you answer, 'Never have I heard anything more divine'?” Friedrich Nietzsche

What a rush you get seeing this amazing bird ducking and diving through the Woodland at great speed :-) Taken at The Gary Jones Goshawk Workshop day in Knutsford last week.
... smiles are to humanity.
These are but trifles, to be sure;
but scattered along life's pathway, the good they do is inconceivable.

This is the other baby in the family: Effie the cockapoo. Barely six months old and her coat had grown so long, roughly three inches long all over. Being mainly white she looked more like a sheep than a wolf. So much so that when a couple passed us and asked what breed she was, I suggested Effie was a young and somewhat rare St Andrew's sheep, and they didn't seem to question my reply. But we hadn't been prepared for the problem of finding a groomer since little Darcy died. We tried a groomer in Strontian?. No. Too busy. Arisaig?, Nope, not taking on new clients. Fort William?, sorry, only existing customers. Oban? No, again, and all blamed on Brexit....err sorry, I mean Covid. Apparently more people have adopted dogs into the lives since the start of covid, meaning there is now an acute shortage of groomers, which must be down to brexit, surely? It was suggested we might have to look for a groomer in Inverness, three hours away, although it was expected the answer would be the same.
In the end we got her into Darcy's groomer (as we were previous customers) but it meant a drive of 442 miles back to Congleton to get her groomed, a round trip of almost 900 miles.
We had no idea Effie had such luscious eyelashes, almost two inches long, until the groomer discovered them under all her 'wool'. Now she looks extra gorgeous, as well as being extra mischievious. She just loves to chew up a used, and discarded disposable nappy.

We have come so far...overcoming feats that were once thought as impossible, yet, we made it possible.
The future is unknown but we must continue on...it will be okay. We'll see....You'll see..

I happened to glance out the window and saw this Blue Jay and what in the world was he doing??? My first thought was that he had hit one of the windows and was stunned. Poor thing! But then another Blue Jay came flying in and poof... he was up and gone! Turns out he was sun bathing just like my chickens do and they look like they have died because they lay on their sides with their feathers all poofed out and their beaks hanging open. The other thing these Jays like to do is come in and bounce off the top of the wind chimes to make them sound off. I've watched and they are not trying to land on them.. just bounce them good. :) Watching birds is entertainment at it's finest! :)
