What better to do on a cold wintry rainy day ... have some fun with this week's Monday Macro theme of abstract "What Is That"

More fun macros to follow :)

Tiny Sparrow, keeping a Look out for Trouble.

I swear everytime I post something its related to some stupid change which has occured. Ugh. The last of the MRL locomotives have finally been removed from mainline service due to BNSF PTC going live. How ironic that the MRL was actually who began this PTC project but in the end became the victim. It's truly a waste as all 5 GP35's are likely sidelined but at the very least unable to lead trains any longer. Over the last few years of its existence the MRL spent over $500,000 to upgrade all 6 GP35's with a complete rewire and upgrade of the control system. MRL 405 has an easy tell by the red antennae right behind the cab. A close eye will also reveal the MRL 404 has been completed, as the class lights it wore its entire career have been removed and tastefully patched during the rewire. This was all done in house by MRL employees, not contractors. Now, who knows what will happen to them? Always thought they were pretty neat units who didn't seem to be very popular elsewhere but for the most part were very good workhorses in local service across Montana.

Channelling a little Howard Jones in my title there. My apologies for the earworm.

What is love?

A façade?

Elusive?

A dream?

Lost?

There were amazing views of mountains on both sides of this ridge. On one side was Mount Baker much of which you can see in the distance. On the other side was Mount Shuksan, which Wilbur was shooting.

Winter moves out leaving space for Spring to begin squeezing in before Summer sneaks up on us, Time takes no hostages for sure. With uncertainty pervasive these days, we want something we Can count on, like our beloved seasons. Each season offers up a gift to us, so open your hearts and enjoy them all. Walking on Shannon Lane today and trying to push the World News from my mind as I walked. The Sun finally popped out from behind the cloud filled dark and gray skies. Ironic today how when the clouds finally opened up and the warmth of the Sun was felt. My state of mind improved and I saw my small corner of the World look a little brighter. Naturally I looked for some visual candy to capture and share here with friends. Knowing that something positive would happen if I looked closely I’d see “What Spring Brings” every year and that is rain, fresh air, color and most of all Peace. Thanks for viewing my work. Hey don’t forget to Wash your hands🙏.

No trip to Florida would be complete for me without spending some quality time with one of my all time favorite subjects - burrowing owl chicks. They are inquisitive, playful and non stop bundles of energy; at least when they are awake! Here, a youngster finds a feather and proceeds to pick it up, drop it, pounce, walk away and then start it all over again. It was so enjoyable to watch!

Thanks so much to everyone who takes the time to view, like or comment on my photos!

Hove beach hut shadows. There was a bit of a photoshoot going on...but what they didn't realise was that what they were creating with their own shadows was actually more interesting...well, to me anyway! ;-) Shame the guys elbow got in the way though!

Sitting pretty, flying high...

This is just a spontaneous fun shot, duly over-processed for Sliders Sunday. It was one of those "Should I take the camera out or not?" moments where I also briefly worried that I might look silly photographing random doves (it was a crowded place, after all). Still, I also thought they looked funny and cute sitting up there on the roof of a subway station entrance, lined up "like organ pipes", as we say in German. I also didn't notice the plane when I photographed the doves but it was a nice surprise when I loaded the image into Lightroom (only to forget about it for another year), and it's a nice extra.

I enhanced the plane in LR with an extra mask and then went into Color Efex. I used the following filters: Brilliance and Warmth and Skylight to bring back the warmth of that sunny June day (the SOOC Raw file was a little on the cool side), Detail Extractor, Reflector Efex ("Soft Gold") to brighten the lower part of the image, and Tonal Contrast (setting "fine", opacity 35 %). I also blew the image up in Topaz Gigapixel because quite a bit of the image was lost by cropping (of the distracting lower part because I couldn't zoom in any further on the doves) and straightening (because I had to shoot straight up).

HSS, Everyone!

Sliding toward the dark side on this stormy Sunday morning....

Watching this entertaining, monsoon sunset was a real "trip" in several ways. It was crazy, vibrant, and constantly morphing (thus the series of shots) so pretty "trippy". Hard to believe, but the total time from the first to the last capture was a mere 15 minutes. It also required a bit of a "trip" to get to a nice viewing spot. So glad that I noticed a weird glow in the sky and poked my head outside to see what was going on in time. Here's an additional still shot from that same evening: flic.kr/p/2rD8RZJ .

Happy New Year Everyone !!!!

May you all capture great light and scenes in 2016

Excuse my absence from Flickr over recent months but I have been a little busy and things are not looking a lot better in the near future

Thanks for all your support , encouragement comments and favs

All the best for 2016 anyway !!!!!!!

Cheers

John

I have found the work of some very talented astrophotographers today. their work inspired me to upload this image taken back in October, 2012.

I´ll be travelling within a month, and i think it will be a great opportunity to make more astrophotography. In the mean time i am trying to learn new techniques and getting the necessary equipment to make all this happen.

Looking forward for the moment to come!

BERNIE: "I'm listening to hear if they'll whisper it to me"

ME: "Whisper what" ?

BERNIE: "Their secret" ...

ME: ?????

BERNIE: "Well, you said there must be a secret about how to keep the d@** raisins inside the dough".... "so, maybe they'll tell me how"

ME: "I don't think they are very friendly buns Bernie ... they probably won't tell"...

BERNIE: "just for that....I'll eat one of 'em" !!

ME: "Let's both have one" ....

Tea Cakes.... and, yes they are lovely to eat even if they were a royal pain to make. I finally gave up trying to form them into buns and put the rest into a loaf tin and baked it off for a loaf of raisin/fruit peel bread. They have an egg wash to make them lovely and shiny and they browned so nicely.

How the heck does anybody make the raisins stay in the dough? Next time I'm going to throw them in the mixer with the dough... never mind trying to roll them up and form buns with fruit falling out all over the place.
