Surprised while hiking in the forest and sitting well protected in a little bothy I used the forced break to catch the short but heavy rain outside.

Because there was no chance to get the dancing droplets a little bit sharper I have used tilt shift to set the most interesting point in this image on the texture of the wooden picnic table.

Black Headed Gull chick, this was one of two being very well protected by doting parents, looks so different now to what it will be in adult plumage.....

The One-horned Rhinoceros is something of a wonder - a truly prehistoric creature whose ancestors roamed the earth nearly 50 million years ago. Surviving in an increasingly hostile world it is, in fact, something of a success story in Assam where it is well protected and its numbers have now risen to around 2,000. This female, seen in the early morning, appeared to emerge from the mists of time. We can only hope that the main threats of habitat loss and poaching can continue to be controlled.

These gorgeous little ones are always under the feet of so many other elephants! well protected and loved!

I was focused on an Australasian Grebe when a family of Black Swan's ventured onto the lake from their well protected nesting site and I was treated to some very special moments as the 3 goslings oscillated between riding on their mum's back and taking short periods of swimming on the lake. The male was very protective but thankfully was happy to stay a reasonable distance away that meant I was able to get some intimate photos.

Cold and fog continues to blanket the Chicago shoreline so what's an outdoor enthusiast to do? Pull out your sea kayak for a warm-up paddle in preparation for better weather on the way. Montrose Harbor is very well protected from the winds making it a perfect place to hone your skills before heading out on the lake or rivers.

Still un-named, Alpha male and beer-and-cider man, back with two original pics from the 2007 Derby which hadn't made it the first time. The photos of him have attracted over 110,000 views and many favourites. The most popular chap on my photostream, I think. He features in 4 of the top 6 most faved pics on my photostream, all six of which come from The Derby! Funnily enough, the next four are all Balkan hunks!

A giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis) stands by the roadside in Fossil Rim Wildlife Center near Glen Rose Texas.

Giraffes walk at a leisurely pace unless disturbed. They walk with both legs on a side moving almost in tandem rather than the diagonal gait of most quadrupeds. This technique keeps its long stilt-like legs from getting entangled with one another. However when they gallop (up to 35 mph), they transfer their feet like rabbits with their hind legs moving at the same time outside of and beyond the two front legs, all the while pumping their necks to maintain speed and balance.

Giraffe fight by charging and swinging their heads at each other as hard as they can. Although violent, these fights do not result in injury because the males’ six-inch “horns” are blunt and covered with skin, while the skin on their necks can be an inch thick.

Their brains are well protected by thick skulls and extensively pocketed with sinuses. However, the skin on their legs is quite thin and it tears easily. Giraffes defend themselves from predators with a powerful kick using the front or hind legs.

The medieval Old City (Altstadt) of the city of Rapperswil is dominated by the castle perched atop a longish rocky hill on the peninsula called Lindenhof hill on its western side respectively Herrenberg on its eastern side where the castle was built. It is surrounded on three sides by the Lake Zürich and by those upper section on the northwestern Seedamm area. Thus, the castle was well protected, dominating the old town of Rapperswil, and controlling the water way between Walensee and Lake Zürich on its most narrow part, as well as the medieval Gotthard Pass route between Lombardy and Zürich, and the Jakobsweg (Way of St. James) to the Einsiedeln Abbey.

Not all ideas are good ideas and even the powerful and experimented Kuat Drive Yards (KDY) engineers can fail utterly. The AT-AC or All Terrain Armored Crawler is a perfect example of one of these false good ideas.

While the supremacy of the AT-AT on the field was not to be demonstrated anymore, particularly after the crushing imperial victory on Hoth, the Imperial Army still complained about the AT-AT expensive cost per unit and its highly demanding maintenance.

KDY engineered went back to their plans and after a few months, they proposed the AT-AC. The concept was quite simple, starting from the successful AT-AT, they replaced the costly maintenance-intensive articulated legs by continuous track systems.

When presenting the AT-AC to the Imperial Army, KDY was proud to claim that it was significantly less expensive than the original AT-AT, that it required only one third of the AT-AT maintenance time, while still retaining the same firepower and robust protection.

Unfortunately, the first field deployments quickly demonstrated all weaknesses of the AT-AC. Because of its great armor and protection, it was heavy and because it was heavy, it was really slow when crawling, its speed approaching ridiculous levels when the landscape was not ideal. The second issue comes from the change of height. While crawling on the ground, the AT-AC was no more inspiring fear but also found itself very limited in its fire coverage ability.

As consequence, the limited number of assembled prototypes have been assigned to 3rd class garrisons on planets with limited local technological civilizations. Surprisingly, the troopers reported only positive feedback about their AT-AC. These were offering comfortable, reliable and well protected transportation and the lack of agility was not a real issue when battling primitive tribes and species. It is even rumored that some COMPNOR officers would have confessed that with AT-AC on Endor instead of AT-ST, the rebellion (not to mention the despised Ewoks) would never had won.

One last remark about the AT-AC. According to several concurring sources, it would have been nicknamed Crawling Armored Transport (C.A.T.) among the troops. COMPNOR supposes that it may related to some kind of resemblance to an animal on one of the remote planets where the AT-AC operates.

A few days ago, I went exploring Vallée des Fantômes in Parc National Monts-Valin, I was with my brother Renald(lefion) and my friend Julien (Abo)...we were alone on the summit for about 2 hours....it was a magical experience that I will never forget.

The Vallée des Fantômes

The phantoms inhabit the valley at an altitude of 800 metres near the clear peaks. The trees are so well protected from winds that blowing snow from nearby summits causes up to three metres of snow accumulation, decking out the evergreens with a layer of soft snow that eventually camouflages them completely. These are the phantoms. It is guaranteed that you will experience a total change of scenery! After a good snowfall, the atmosphere is muted, the ground seems to be carpeted in cotton batten and the silence is omnipresent.

Panorama 360º par Abo (Julien).... a must!

My heart has been broken so many times

but never again, finally I've turned the page

Once free to fall in love whenever it wanted

now for my own sanity it is locked in a cage

Once as free as a bird my pulsating heart was

I gave every heartbeat to my conniving lover

Only hope for me now is to keep it locked up

in my ribcage, hopefully in time, it will recover

Had planned to be married in the near future

partied for hours, night when we got engaged

But, one night I found you in arms of another

so terribly disappointed, surprised and outraged

Most of my life I wore my heart on my sleeve

learnt a bit though from life experiences and age

No more will I allow my heart to be free to wander

intend keeping it close and safe in this old rib cage

So many dishonest people in the world today

cheats and liars, I never cease to be amazed

Heart's beating slowly, but beating just the same

one day it will be free again, just not at this stage

Please don't worry about my poor old broken heart

I have promised myself it shall not be neglected

Seems pretty sad I know to lock a heart in a cage

only way I know though, to keep it well protected

Baby elephants are very well protected. If the rest of the herd senses a threat, the larger members crowd around the more vulnerable smaller members. As tensions had risen in Historica, the people of Mophet and its surroundings had grown increasingly nervous. Although accustomed to hardships for generations, the recent inflow of money and resources to the region had meant that the standard of living had risen dramatically. This had led to many of the inhabitants changing their rugged nomad lifestyles into a more “civilized” way of life. Thus, they no longer felt safe as rumors had spread throughout Kali that bands of robbers and thugs roamed freely, taking whatever they desired. There was also a widespread notion that merchants and armies from the north would try to use the current instability to attack and destroy some of the more important cities and settlements along the oil road, in an attempt to establish new trade-routes, thus endangering the position that Mophet now had acquired.

Now a central hub along the oil road, the leaders as well as the common folk, realized they had to take steps to ensure they would not be attacked. The city had, until recently, been somewhat unprotected against attack in terms of fortifications and instead relied on good relationships with local tribe-leaders. With the city growing and more of the markets and small farms that made up the outskirts of it being exposed, a decision had to be made.

Tabib D’Odo discussed the matter with a good friend of him, a half-elf that went by the name of sir Gideon. Tabib had met him a few times on his travels to Barqa and the two had gotten along very well. Gideon, being a seasoned fighter and now one of the leaders of the neighboring city of Barqa, advised Tabib to immediately start to reinforce Mophet against what might come. “If nothing else, strong walls and turrets usually cast some doubts in the hearts of any potential attacker” said Gideon.

Being a city that basically had consisted of several smaller settlements slowly merging together, there were already some walls and fortifications in place from times passed. This however provided protection mostly to the inner parts of Mophet, and did little to ensure the safety of the many people working the markets and gardens/farms on the outskirts of the city. Given the good relationship with Barqa, and the income that had been generated through trade, Tabib was able to quickly muster a large number of builders to help the local carpenters and masons already hard at work. They began raising and strengthening some of the larger sections that still remained intact in the outer parts of the city, as well as building entire new sections to make sure the city would be well protected in case of any attack. Turrets were built and an increased number of guards also started to patrol the walls as well as the surroundings to make sure none tried to enter without permission.

So this is my entry to challenge III (fortifications) over on Guilds of Historica. Had a blast building this and I hope you all like it :)

Stop, in the name of love, seemed like such a fitting title for this shot! A young and possibly belligerent elephant stands in the road as if to block it, using his ears to make himself look even bigger. Little more than two years old, judging by his tusks, this little fellow has a lot of living to do, hopefully well protected within the Madikwe Game Reserve, unless of course he runs out in front of a fast moving truck!

Our assumption was that the path has been also used to get animals from the meadows on the mountains down or up.

During my last day of shooting in Le Puy-en-Velay (March 9, 2023), after I completed what I had meant to photograph in the cloister, I went into the cathedral next door for a couple of additional shots.

The Notre-Dame cathedral of Le Puy is one of the very rare almost entirely Romanesque cathedral remaining in France. Many others have been seriously remodeled during the Gothic age or later, and while Le Puy was not immune to such “improvements”, in particular in the 19th century, those were carried out in the spirit of the Romanesque architecture. Far from having come to us unaltered (alas!), the cathedral presents at least a Romanesque appearance throughout, even though not all its parts are genuinely Mediæval.

This is the Saint John porch, which opens into the northern arm of the transept. It was built in the late 1100s. It is a part of the cathedral that is rarely shown, and even more rarely discussed. Its elongated tympanum showed, obviously, Christ and two angels at the top, and the Last Supper below. Both sculptures have been severely hacked away during the French Revolution.

The part that remains 100 percent genuine and untouched is the door: not only are the ironworks pure 12th century, but the door panels are wood covered with... vellum parchment! Hence the unusual and stunning color.

The portal is recessed under a deep arch that supports clerical lodgings above (among which the apartment of the Dean of Canons I have showed a few days ago). Thus, it was always well protected from the elements, which is certainly the main reason why that splendid door came to us almost unscathed after almost 800 years.

One of the main workhorses of FPKF, Sakharov class was designed as part of Navy's renewal program, which included a number of different ships, most common of which was the Gandhi class. It was a domestic aircraft/spacecraft carrier, the type of ships that in the doctrine of peacekeeping forces are the basis of the fleet along with frigates, since heavy artillery cruisers and battleships were not very suitable for resolving regional conflicts and didn't fit into the image of the FPKF.

The ship has a forced propulsion system similar to that installed on the Gandhi-class frigates, which increased the unification between types of ships and ease of maintenance. However, the result of this was a relatively low speed, which, however, was not a significant disadvantage, because it was initially assumed that the carrier should always be under the cover of frigates or cruisers. But already at the pre-production stage, customers changed their requirements, and now Sakharov-class spacecraft carriers had to be able to perform combat missions without being accompanied by other large ships. The result of these requirements was the strengthening of defensive armament and the installation of two twin plasma cannons, despite the fact that the installation of heavy artillery was not originally intended. This decision turned out to be very successful in the end, since the Nobel-class cruisers were delayed and for a long time the "Sakharov"s served as spacecraft-carrying cruisers. The ship also had a rather unusual feature - two "hulls", which contain hangars and storage facilities, could be dropped in case of an emergency, and the middle "main" part of the ship could quickly retreat from a dangerous situation. This ability was a compromise that the engineers made to save the crew in the event that speed was required, which the "Sakharov"s did not have.

At the beginning of the Insectoid Wars, they were the most common carriers in the fleet. Despite being well protected from enemy light vehicles, without cover from specialized artillery ships their relatively low speed and underarmament led to heavy losses. Over time, this problem became less acute, as the shortage of ships in the fleet leveled off, but by that time the production of the "Sakharov"s had been stopped and they were gradually being forced out of the fleet by more modern carriers and spacecraft-carrying battleships. Until the end of the war, they mainly performed the tasks of patrolling and transferring cargo and equipment, almost not participating in large battles. After the Insectoid Wars, they were distributed to various self-defense forces and PMCs, where they can still be found today.

As our catamaran made its way slowly up the Rio Dulce, Guatemala towards Lake Izabal, the destination was for lunch at the Catamaran Island Hotel.

According to the hotel owner the hotel location on Rio Dulce is well protected from hurricanes that batter the Guatemala Caribbean coast. Hmmm, looks like this palm didn't get the memo.

RenownTravel: The Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park contains the ruins of the ancient town of Kamphaeng Phet, an important town in the Sukhothai Kingdom. The park that is little visited by foreign tourists contains monuments built during the 13th to 17th centuries by the Sukhothai and Ayutthaya empires.

The city of Kamphaeng Phet derives its name from the ancient walls protecting it. Kamphaeng Phet translates to “wall of diamonds”. The town was an important part of the defense system of the Sukhothai Kingdom. Kamphaeng Phet was a “wang” or garrison town to protect the capital Sukhothai from invasion by Burmese armies. The town was situated in a strategically important location and was well protected with a system of moats, city walls with watchtowers and fortresses.

Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park is one of the three parks that together make up the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic town of Sukhothai and associated historic towns”, the other two being Si Satchanalai and the capital Sukhothai.

Looking into Grafton Notch in Maine on a recent winter afternoon. Ice fills the potholes on this summit while some wild looking low clouds flow over the other side of the notch. I love winter hiking, the scenery is so amazing when it's all covered in snow! I was well protected in the woods on the way up on this hike, but as soon as I came out onto the open ledges I was blasted by wind, not crazy wind but enough to make it interesting while I photographed the scene.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY BEAUTIFUL UNNI <3

“If I had a flower for every time I thought of you...I could walk through my garden forever.”

― Alfred Tennyson

It may seem a strange choice of song for my beautiful Unni, but I know that she loves this song and I really wanted to give her a special gift on her birthday. Well, you know how we suffer for our art, so I will tell you that I walked a lot of miles in my newest Doc Martens just to get less than 3 minutes footage and wished I'd worn my old ones, because I skinned both of my heels and hopefully they will heal quickly without blistering thanks to the power of Germolene, Savlon and a box of plasters!!! ; 0)) Well you also know that I often inadvertently cause a stir wherever I go … that's not meant to sound big-headed! Far from it, but strange things just seem to happen around me and this occasion was no different! So, my anonymous friend and Flickr buddy was holding a torch and shining it on my boots and I was walking stooped over a little to watch my screen while I filmed, shouting over my shoulder to him like I was some kind of big-shot Director and I was following arrows and road markings and walking on double yellow lines and down the middle of the road (Don't worry! It was quiet!) and even a miniature railway track, but at the start of our journey we were stopped by two policeman who wondered what on earth we were up to and came to the conclusion that we'd dropped a ring or something and were desperately searching for it. I was able to reassure them that I hadn't lost one and that my friend hadn't given me one, but Valentine's Day was imminent which freaked him out, ha ha!!! … ; 0))) So we had a laugh and a chat and I told them what I was up to and I wished really that I had filmed them and included them because they really were rather beautiful, but most likely they would have declined even though we seemed to have made their nightly patrol more interesting! : 0)) Very friendly policemen and nice to know that we are well protected when we're wandering about at night, even if it must have appeared to them that we were more in need of protection from ourselves!!! ; 0)))) Thanks to my anonymous friend and Flickr buddy for his torch-holding abilities, loan of his shadow to walk over and for suggesting filming at night. Was really interesting to see how the shadows turned out when I view it back and gives the video an arty feel that I love. Hope you love it too and to you, my wonderful friend, Unni, lots and lots of love, good health and happiness and may all your wishes come true!! xoxoxo

This beautiful world seen through Unni's loving eyes

is warm and enchanting; always truthful; no lies

with Summer in her heart though knee-deep in snow

with boots on she's laughing everywhere that she goes

Who needs snow angels when you have a friend such as this

whose warm heart and smile create for you a world of such bliss

She photographs a flower like no-one else does

her magnificent macro; her bokeh sweeps like a brush

of an artist that paints even the tiniest of details

creates art with a click; her clear perspective never fails

the clarity of the mystical magical world that she sees

conveys a beautiful soul; she will always succeed

to bring to this world the ideals we all wish

and look for in each other and in ourselves that we fish

and hold on to the sunbeams that we catch so that we

can radiate the beauty that is the essence of dear Unni

magnify it all out to encompass us all

what a beautiful world where we can stand tall

so proud to know this beautiful woman; my friend

Happy Birthday, my dear Unni; lots of love to you I send xoxoxoxo

p.s. My beautiful Unni, when the Police pulled up I saw a camper van with Kon-tiki on the side! Norwegian connection, right!!! Kon-Tiki expedition led by Norwegian explorer and writer Thor Heyerdahl. It seemed like a perfect sign! : 0)))

p.p.s. I bet he didn't get blisters!!!

City Palace, Udaipur, is a palace complex situated in the city of Udaipur, Rajasthan. It was built over a period of nearly 400 years, with contributions from several rulers of the Mewar dynasty. It's construction began in 1553, started by Maharana Udai Singh II of the Sisodia Rajput family as he shifted his capital from the erstwhile Chittor to the new found city of Udaipur.[1] The palace is located on the east bank of Lake Pichola and has several palaces built within its complex.

The City Palace in Udaipur was built in a flamboyant style and is considered the largest of its type in the state of Rajasthan. It was built atop a hill, in a fusion of the Rajasthani and Mughal architectural styles, providing a panoramic view of the city and its surroundings. Overlooking Lake Pichola, several historic monuments like the Lake Palace, Jag Mandir, Jagdish Temple, Monsoon Palace, and Neemach Mata temple, are all in the vicinity of the palace complex. Nestled within the Aravali mountain range, these landmarks are associated in popular culture with the filming of the 1983 James Bond movie Octopussy.

History

The City Palace was built concurrently with the establishment of the Udaipur city by Maharana Udai Singh II and his successor Maharanas over a period of the next 400 years. The Maharanas lived and administered their kingdom from this palace, thereby making the palace complex an important historic landmark.

The Mewar kingdom had flourished initially in Nagda (30 kilometres (19 mi) to the north of Udaipur), established in 568 AD by Guhil, the first Maharana of Mewar. In the 8th century, the capital was moved to Chittor, a hill top fort from where the Sisodias ruled for 800 years. Maharana Uday Singh II inherited the Mewar kingdom at Chittor in 1537 but by that time there were signs of losing control of the fort in wars with the Mughals. Udai Singh II, therefore, chose the site near Lake Pichola for his new kingdom as the location was well protected on all sides by forests, lakes and the Aravalli hills. He had chosen this site for his new capital, much before the sacking of Chittor by Emperor Akbar, on the advice of a hermit he had met during one of his hunting expeditions.

The earliest royal structure he built here was the Royal courtyard or 'Rai Angan', which was the beginning of the building of the City Palace complex. The court was built at the location where the hermit had advised Maharana to build his new capital.

After Udai Singh’s death in 1572, his son Maharana Pratap took the reins of power at Udaipur. However, he was defeated by the Mughal emperor Akbar at the Battle of Haldighati in 1576 and Udaipur fell under the Mughal rule. After the death of Akbar, Mewar was given back to Maharana Pratap's son and successor Amar Singh I by Jahangir. ]However, the Mughal army sent many expeditions against the Mewar empire, culminating in a peace treaty between both rulers.

But with the increasing Marathas attacks by 1761, Udaipur and the Mewar state were in dire straits and in ruins. By 1818, Maharana Bhim Singh signed a treaty with the British accepting their protection against the other empires. After the Indian independence in 1947, the Mewar Kingdom, along with other princely states of Rajasthan, merged with the democratic India, in 1949. The Mewar Kings subsequently also lost their special royal privileges and titles. The successive Maharanas, however, retained their ownership of the palaces in Udaipur and converted parts of the palace complex into heritage hotels.

The baya weaver (Ploceus philippinus) is a weaverbird found across the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Flocks of these birds are found in grasslands, cultivated areas, scrub and secondary growth and they are best known for their hanging retort shaped nests woven from leaves.

While weaver birds prefer very tall palm and coconut trees to build safe and well protected nests, here is a weaver bird male that was seen in Jaipur Nagargarh Biological Park, which was weaving its nest at eye level on a neem tree. Perhaps he has chosen this spot as this is right inside the lion's pen and not many predators would risk getting inside the king of the jungle's home.

The small village Colle Santa Lucia seems well protected amidst the high peaks of the Dolomites that encircle it and on which night has just fallen.

Le petit village Colle Santa Lucia semble bien protégé entre les hauts sommets des Dolomites qui l'entourent et sur lesquels la nuit vient de tomber.

Designed much like a conventional tank, but instead of caterpillar tracks it walks on four long, finely-crafted, crab-like legs with cables almost trailing along the ground. The sleek body is smooth and simplistic, and the turret atop the chassis is fairly small with a medium-sized cannon. The drive unit at the rear is fairly well protected with a small smokestack.

Few of the Empire's glorious mechs embody versatility quite like this rather elegant walker. It is fairly durable for its tier, has respectable damage, an accurate and strong cannon with splash damage lethal to infantry, and respectable speed. It can perform and respond to almost any task equally well. Its turret can turn to face a target, which allows it to respond quickly to a changing battlefield situation without having to turn the entire chassis to do so.

Croatia is a country in Southeast Europe. It borders Slovenia to the northwest, Hungary to the northeast, Serbia to the east, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Montenegro to the southeast, sharing a maritime border with Italy. Croatia was part of the former Yugoslavia. A population of 4 million, most of whom are Catholics. Zagreb is the capital. Balanced between the Balkans and Central Europe, this country has been passed between rival kingdoms, empires and republics for thousands of years. If there is an advantage to this ongoing disruption, it is in the rich cultural legacy each has left behind. From Venetian palaces, Napoleonic fortresses, Slavic churches, Viennese mansions to socialist sculptures. But most attraction is the coastline with the remarkable clarity of the water and white pebbly beach. Despite being the fastest rising holiday destination in Europe in the past decade, Croatia still doesn't feel overrun by tourists. There are long sandy and winding beaches too, perfect for lazy days. Croatia is a beautiful country to discover many different landscapes. Zavalatica is a small bay located approximately in the middle the southern coast of the island of Korčula, overlooking the open sea and the archipelago of Lastovo.

The village Zavalatica is located in a picturesque bay that cuts deep into the rocky coasts of the island of Korčula. The coast of the bay is rocky and the sea is perfectly clear and clean thanks to the sea currents that constantly bring fresh sea water from the open seas. Zitna Bay is a deep, well-protected bay that hides one of the most romantic beaches on the island. It is a small hike to get to the Zitna beach, but well worth it. Zitna Bay is surrounded by lush Mediterranean vegetation and the beach is hidden from view from the sea, so many boats pass by unaware of the hidden gem at the bottom of the bay. The bay is uninhabited, with only one private holiday home for rent just above the beach. Zitna is ideal for small children with warm water and long, shallow access to the sea. The seabed in Zitna Bay consists of sand and is dotted with underwater fields of sea grass, with a rich marine life. The sea in and around Zitna is bustling with life and invites you to snorkel. Lush surface and undersea vegetation together with shallow sea and sandy seabed create a beautiful turquoise color. There is not much shade on the beach, but above the beach are pine trees that provide protection from the hot summer sun.
