"Welcome, 2016" I finally made it out to the old sign last week and was happy to get a rising moon sneaking over the trees across the highway. I'm glad I waited until this point in the year because I was also able to capture Orion as he begins this season's hunt. You can see him just over the sign.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Off and on for the past two weeks we have been hearing a sporadic pre-dawn squawk of a yellow-crowned night heron in the pine tree at the corner of our house; yet no heron could be found in the morning light. It's the season when we daily search the limbs looking for the whole colony that returns from the previous year to repair their nests and raise the next generation. (Some of you may remember them from last year's posts.) But where are the rest of them? Finally, this morning - the full chorus! So far I have counted 14! Because of their proximity in the yard, we can't avoid being entertained by each other. They do what birds do at this time of year and we laugh. I do what I do - perch on my ladder in contorting positions with my camera and they seem equally entertained. =))

Seagull welcoming visitors to Alcatraz

Indian Railways has always been regarded as one of the great railway networks, but with the country being so vast it seemed like a far off prospect to actually visit it. Where would you start after all? However, the pace of change over the last few years has been incredible with metre gauge railways being wiped out in favour of broad gauge and electrification advancing rapidly, seriously diminishing the areas where the popular ALCo's worked passenger duties. It was with that knowledge that 3 intrepid enthusiasts finally decided to take the plunge and head to India in November 2022 to experience the last few remaining pockets of interest before they disappeared for good.

We flew from Heathrow to Delhi with Virgin, arriving at around 01:00. There followed a long wait and a final beer (Gujarat being a dry state) before catching a domestic flight at 05:45 with SpiceJet to Rajkot in order to save around a day. We were heading for the Veraval-Amreli-Junagadh Junction metre gauge but had the morning to spend around Rajkot Junction. One of our party had worked out there was a Veraval Junction bound ALCo soon after we landed so we walked to the lineside near the airport and set up shop at a level crossing for our first shot of the trip. WDM3A no.14097 duly made its presence known and is seen shortly after departure from Rajkot Junction at Bhomeshwar Main Rd with train no.09513 to Veraval Junction on 1st November 2022.

"Welcome to Lanesboro" sign on Fillmore County Roads 8 and 21, shortly before the road takes the plunge into the historic town of Lanesboro, Minnesota.

Lanesboro lies on the South Branch of the Root River in the cave-filled karst topography of Fillmore County in southeastern Minnesota. The region is the part of Minnesota that the most recent glaciations did not reach, leaving it with geologic features that aren't found anywhere else in the state and the name, "the Driftless Area." The scenery in this unique area is spectacular.

Lanesboro, named after one of its founders, F. A. Lane, was platted in 1868 in a beautiful bluff-lined area in the Root River Valley. The town and the area around it were settled mainly by Norwegian immigrants who left their mark all over Fillmore County.

Welcome To Lisbon by Daniel Arrhakis (2016)

A composition made with a street art mural near Rossio Train station and a doll sculpture of a restaurant front near this place. Part of the mural in the left upper part was reconstructed for fit in this format.

The Mural was made by the Brazilian-born artist Oliveiros Rodrigues da Silva Junior, also known as “Utopia63,” is found on Calçada do Carmo. It illustrates Lisbon from decades ago, in a scene by Rossio Station.

"Thursday, 7 July 2022, continues a stormy stretch on the Prairies with a renewed threat for severe storms across Alberta. Tornadoes are possible. Stay alert!" From the Weather Network. Calgary was in the risk area for one or two tornadoes this afternoon, as well as very large hail. Really wished I didn't have two appointments mid to late afternoon. What a drive it was! The heavy rain started when I was driving north to pick up an ordered meal from Forage Foods in Marda Loop. A bit of hail in with the rain, but thank goodness no large hailstones. As I pulled into the parking lot, there was an almighty thunderclap - just one and no more. The drive home was the same torrential rain until I was almost home. When I reached home, there was no water evidence anywhere at all. Part way home, a beautiful rainbow formed in the distance and it was interesting to see how a small rainbow formed each time a car drove through the water on the road and sent the water flying. Unfortunately, I was on a major highway at rush hour, so there was no chance to stop and take a photo. I was glad to get home!

Yesterday, 6 July 2022, I spent some time at the Saskatoon Farm and then drove a little further SE of Calgary to drive a few familiar roads. Turned out to be a gloomy afternoon, with rain. Managed a few photos, though.

The most exciting find was a very distant American Badger, out in the middle of a huge field. I still can't believe that I actually spotted it. The field was a mix of dark soil and green. I just caught sight of some movement, that looked like maybe a dog. Definitely not a Coyote, as it was very low to the ground. When I finally managed to find it through my viewfinder, I was in shock - a Badger? Spent a little time pulled over in my car, watching it once it reached its sett (den). For a while, it kept looking out. It was almost playing "hide-and-seek" with a Richardson's Ground Squirrel, which came within maybe three feet or so of the den. Each animal was well aware of the presence of the other. I sat there, wondering if I might witness a rather unpleasant capture, but nothing happened. Photos and video are all poor quality given the distance and gloom and rain. However, I was thrilled to bits to experience this. This was only my seventh Badger seen in many years. Sat in my car with the windows down to take photos, of course, and my car quickly filled with annoying, buzzing mosquitoes, ha.

To commemorate 50 years (to the day) of main line preservation running, a commemorative special train ran from London Victoria to Bath on 27 April 2024. The loco had just emerged from a heavy overhaul and had undergone a few test runs in the previous week or so. On a cold and damp morning, the train approaches Byfleet and New Haw at around 75mph. The train was accorded the rare honour for steam of the fast line from Wimbledon all the way to Worting Junction.

She's the second doll I've had who's not very photogenic in the sense that she's a LOT prettier in person, quite tricky to capture her on a photo :)

Coastal Brown Bear Mother and First Year Cubs, Alaska

After being dropped off by the float plane I found myself in a lush green landscape with a crystal clear rivers, pollution free air, St. Augustine volcano off in the distance, the closest road or power lines a 100 miles away and everything was absolutely picture perfect pristine and felt untouched by man….it was my idea of a paradise.

THEN less than an hour after arriving, this beautiful female and her two cubs came by camp to welcome us. It was heart-poundingly amazing, almost surreal.

John and I didn’t know what to expect going into this adventure but any anxieties about the time or money invested to get there were swept away when we saw her. We knew we were in a very special place.

She instantly became one of my favorite bears and she ended up being the first and last bear I photographed while in Alaska.

I went on this trip with my friend John Blumenkamp. He’s an excellent photographer and an even better human being. If you aren’t following him, you should. You can find him at TetonTrail.com.

Top choice old town in Songkhla & Singha Nakhon

Wander through narrow historic streets where quaint old houses in the Sino-Portuguese style rub shoulders with traditional wooden Chinese buildings. Some of these old-world relics have been restored and are home to little boutique cafes and restaurants, and others remain in a glorious state of decay. Hidden in amongst them are Chinese temples, beautiful streets of art, and a village mosque where the waft of grilled meat fills the air as local Muslim street vendors sell halal satay skewers.

Nang Ngam road is particularly picturesque.
