On the hottest of afternoons, the sky went dark, a drop fell, and soon after, the clouds broke and everything and everyone on sight got soaked. One hour later, the sun was fiercely shinning again....

I've been experimenting with different techniques, compositions and framing in camera for the starling images. The original of this shot was 93" x 62". I'm not a fan of cropping but I have reduced the size to square 35" x35" to upload, albeit we can now upload massive images to Flickr.

The world slipped away behind him, one footprint at a time.
The cold no longer bit — it had become part of the landscape, like silence.
With each step, the snow erased the last, as if it too wished to forget him.
No direction. No promise. Only that faint trace ahead.
Etched by other feet, perhaps.
Or maybe by him, in another time.
There were no more roads.
Only white — like a page still unwritten.
And he had no pen. But he kept walking.
In a world where faces often tell stories, this portrait speaks through what is hidden. A solitary eye emerges from the shadows, hinting at untold tales and silent emotions. It's a dance between concealment and revelation, inviting viewers to explore the depths beyond the visible
The flower is a beautiful mauve thistle, Kemp Town Enclosures are covered in them at the moment. Having looked up the bug I think it's a Common Green Bottle Fly, with a pretty metallic green and yellow body - but I'm happy to be corrected.
Big Beach Clean - Amazing what gets washed onto the local beach. Fishing nets, ropes and cages are probably one of the biggest threats to fish and marine mammals and they seem to make up the biggest percentage of the debris coming ashore. This beach clean gathered together a few adult size buckets, a long yellow plastic tube, some electrical wire, lots of plastics and most interesting a car battery!
The numbers of starlings migrating to the marina gets less and less each year. I'm hoping that they're visiting Brighton Pier instead.
In October 2021 the ITV returned to Brighton to record the new series of Peter James detective series 'Grace'. The first few days were filmed on Black Rock and the old library on Dukes Mound. Then the filming moved on to other parts of the city. The security guards were fine with me taking photos but asked me not to post them on social media till they'd finished filming...... then I forgot to post them.
Three months to go and our garden centre has morphed into Santa’s Grotto 🎅 with Christmas trees 🎄🎄decorations and 🇨🇽presents 🎁 filling half the store. Bah Humbug !!!
When I was walking through Kipling's Garden this morning I could hear beautiful singing coming from behind a wall. It sounded like something from the Sound of Music so I thought it was the nuns from the local convent. I went to investigate and found there was a children's performance of 'There's a Tiger in the Garden' taking place by the Flock Theatre. The audience were sitting under the trees on large blankets put out by the theatre company. The whole audience, adults and little ones seemed mesmerised;-)))
Sorry about one swans head but the pics documenting my everyday life and the ones I took with both heads in didn’t have the same impact.
In April 2020 I watched, photographed and video’d one set of the marina swans as they built their nest, laid 5 eggs and diligently carried out their parental duties turning and sitting on the eggs. Sadly the eggs failed to hatch and I’m told that they didn’t hatch the previous year either so it is likely that the male is now infertile.
I felt sad this week when I saw them taking their turn sitting on one egg and I’m sure there will be more. I still photographed them and live in hope ;-(((
Due date 7th - 14th June 🐣🐣🐣 😁
a fleeting, cinematic moment captured on the steps in madrid. her silhouette is cast in stark contrast, frozen against the deep blackness, while her hair, caught by the wind, breaks the stillness with movement. the sharp light and shadow enhance the drama, turning a simple scene into an evocative story of solitude and momentum. the stone steps add structure, grounding the composition, while the contrast of her presence gives the image an emotional tension, inviting a sense of curiosity about her journey and destination.
After sharing three layered scenes from the Marolles earlier, I continue the walk with two portraits from Rue Haute, the heart of the quartier. These images aren't about contrast or compositional tricks—they're about character. People here don't pose; they are themselves—bold, expressive, and comfortable in their surroundings.
This woman, the pub owner, stepped outside for a smoke, framed by sharp sunlight, deep shadows, and a hint of Duvel-red neon behind her. She saw me, offered a half-smile, raised her hand, and paused just long enough. She later shared that her partner, who has passed away, was also a photographer.
What appeals to me is how genuine everything feels—her gesture, the light, the environment. The Marolles often shares its stories this way: through brief encounters that speak for themselves.
This project is marketed as “an inspirational work based on the importance of bringing communities together and the values of interaction and experience to wellbeing”.
Looking at the huge programme and range of events there is no doubt it will bring all ages and communities together.
No, I didn't gamble and win. I simply turned the corner to drive across Brighton Racecourse and a young lady stepped out in front of me with a 'Road Closed' sign. The road closes when the races go across them. I got out of the car and asked where I could stand to take photos of the race. She showed me where and said the road would be closed for about 12 mins so not to worry.
Inge - Tove - Lisbeth - Karin (From Denmark)
These four ladies were trying to take a Selfie of all four of them on Brighton Beach. I offered to take the photo and, of course, took one for me. They were telling me they were on a trip from Denmark and were pleased to witness our UK elections a few days earlier.
Chay and her friend Holly were messing around trying to play a duet on the piano in Brighton Station. I asked if they were music students and Chay replied to say no but she had a piano at home which she learnt on.
I met a friend for lunch at a local charity emporium. As we were wandering around the vintage area I thought I could see a leopard behind me and turned around quickly to see Peggy looking at me. I praised her leopard style onesie and her owner told me she makes them herself and Peggy also has a zebra onesie. Peggy was happy to have her photo taken and even struck a few doggie poses.
After living in the burbs for the past 25 yrs it’s been visually refreshing to see some old next to new on my lunch breaks downtown downtown
The Brighton Festival launched today with the Children's Parade, after a two year break because of covid restrictions. The truly appropriate theme was rebuilding and hope, broken down into three subjects areas, rebuilding nature, homes and communities. The schools and children were invited to create large scale artworks and costumes, that explored ideas for children to learn together through making. They certainly did not disappoint.
This photo won’t mean much to many Flickr viewers but to me it means the start of a good 6 months of starling gazing ahead. The colourful little chaps have returned from migration at least 4 weeks earlier than usual. I’d love to know why? Last night I saw hundreds of them packed on a roof in the harbour. It was 8.30 pm so I was planning to go out this evening and photograph them. Instead at 8 pm I witnessed thousands of them doing a fly past over our balconies and only had time to grab my iPhone. It wasn’t a murmuration, they were all going somewhere else for the murmuration. Probably Brighton Pier.
Quadrophenia is a 1979 British Drama film based on The Who's Rock Opera of the same name. The theme of the film covers a planned bank holiday away and shows the rivalry and the ensuing riots between The Mods (on their scooters) and The Rockers (on their motorbikes) as they descend on Brighton for the weekend. The Alleyway is part of a scene in the film. I've photographed a neater, graffiti free part of the Alley.
This guy caught my eye as I was wandering around the steam engines as he looked so relaxed lying propped between two camping chairs. I quietly asked if I could take his photo and he laughed, smiled and said “sure”. His name is George and when I said if he gave me his email address I’d send him some photo’s he struggled to find it. I laughed and said ‘it’s my generation that’s supposed to struggle with emails”. He replied “I don’t do technology - I do steam engines”.
Walking across the Marina Square I saw this tiny dog in a (Dog Gear) pushchair and another on a lead. The owner saw I was about to get tangled up in the lead and we both laughed and I realised what a cute photo they would all make. Lily said yes to me taking some photos and I asked her to move over towards the window. Coco would not stay still on the ground so Lily picked her up and I got them all in the frame.
⛵ From the beating heart of the Old Port, through bustling city streets and hidden alleys
⛪️ Up to the golden guardian of Marseille, Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde, watching over sea and soul
️ Past the striking La Major Cathedral, where history meets the horizon
☀️ A city of contrasts – rough and radiant, ancient and alive
Marseille isn’t just visited – it’s felt. Every step tells a story.
I was walking through the lanes from Brighton Station and, as I walked past The Pond (a pub), this lass came out and sat on a window ledge to have a cigarette break. Happy for me to take her photo with a beautiful smile.
Visiting the local garden centre today I met this falconer with a Raven. I've never seen such a huge bird so I can't have ever been to the Tower of London. He was found as a chick with a damaged wing and raised by the charity.
The station was very crowded the day I took this image but I couldn't not go and start a conversation with Alison and ask if I could take her photo. Her vibrant outfit and the light on her face made sure she would stand out in any crowd.
