Forty year old G-MASS at London Southend Airport waiting for a take off slot.

In a suburb of Belfast. Photo taken from a tourist bus.

A real pity that those rubbish bins are kept by a tribute like this.

I think that this butterfly is a small copper with ragged wings. But don't know for sure.

It would have cost a small fortune to have constructed the mobile crane shown here. My own creations with Meccano during the late 1950's/early 1960's were somewhat limited by cost of the sets. I did inherit some battered Meccano bits and pieces handed down through the generations, and with hindsight they may well have been from the late 1920's or early 1930's.

The paddle steamer Medway Queen achieved fame as one of the Dunkirk Little Ships. But before that she had already been involved in the evacuation of children from areas at risk of heavy air attacks or invasion. The Medway Queen (HMS Medway Queen then) transported children and some woman from the Medway Towns via Gravesend to Felixstowe. At least one (I think two) baby was born on board during the trip.

I've never really got to grips with why children were evacuated from the South-East to areas in the Midlands etc, then some children from London were evacuated to the very towns where children has already been moved away from. Certainly happened in the areas around Folkestone and Southend-On-Sea for sure.

One way to distinguish non-breeding male from female sunbird is the black streak over the yellow underparts.

Opened in 1911 as the New Prince's Theatre with the word 'New' being dropped in the following decade. The name change to Shaftesbury Theatre came in 1963. The famous musical Hair had a long run here being brought to an end when part of the ceiling collasped in 1973. The theatre now seats about 1,400 people compared to the 2,392 seats back in 1911.

Photograph taken through a coach windscreen on a cold wet day. Lots of rain and hailstones on this trip!

The starting point of the ground offensive element of Operation Market Garden in September 1944.

The bridge photographed here is a post war construction. When the Allied Forces took control of this area on 10th September 1944 a German built pontoon bridge was in place here replacing the orginal bridge destroyed in 1940 to slow down the German advance.

Crossing the Bocholt-Herentals Canal this is Bridge Number 9, taken and protected by the 615th Field Squadron, RE, known as Joe's Troops. Crossing the bridge the road leads to, Valkenswaard, Eindhoven, Nijmegen and Arnhem. If the ground troops taking this route had not been ordered to stop for overnight resting the result of Operation Market Garden may well have achieved its objectives. Being 12 hours late appears to have been the difference .
