HFF!

Explored on July 27, 2024 #407. Thanks for visiting:)

Visiting a well known GHO nest in Yellowstone, the female and owlets were always too hard to see. This one and only evening the male was sitting in this evergreen not too far away, in this huge gap. Too public of a place for him to give a hoot, so no big eye contact looks thrown our way.

[Having returned home and as we inch into late Fall and Winter with no plans for extended photo trips until next year, I resume uploading the rest of my selected photos from 2020 (10 per day, usually in the morning CET), as well as a selection of my current, 2021 photos (usually 3 or 4 per day, in the evening CET).]

The Gers is a small part of the region of Aquitaine, which covers most of southwestern France. On July 2020, we rented a house for three weeks in the Gers area, and commencing today, I will upload a selection of the photographs I took while we were there. I hope you will enjoy them!

As usual, I will caption more specifically in bold type below whenever necessary.

In the old province of Gascogne, of which the Gers is a part, the word bastide designates, not a house, like it does in Provence for example, but an entire village, laid out and built from scratch during the Middle Ages, usually as a sort of joint venture between a local lord and the religious authorities, usually the area’s bishop.

Thus, entirely new settlements were created where needed, and as their existence did not result from the helter-skelter amalgamation over time of houses next to one another, but from strict town planning, those villages very often featured a central square with a covered hall for markets and local assemblies, and a square grid map like any modern-day American town...!

The village of Cologne is a fine example of that sort of planning. In addition to its central square, it has kept a couple of very nice half-timbered Mediæval houses.

We have in our area, a doctor's office. I am not sure where they are from.

They have shared with us these beautiful works. Enriching us.........

Perhaps someone out there can tell us more about these works.

Fans of Mediæval architecture and art are in for a good time when in Gascony, as many villages have a strong house, fortified farm, manor or castle of varying size and condition.

This one is the manor or small castle of Avezan, less than a kilometer from the old house that we had rented.

The large church of Notre-Dame de Vopillon, near the village of Beaumont-sur-Losse, was originally built in the late 1100s to serve as abbey church for a monastery of women founded by the local lord in 1140.

It suffered many trials throughout the Hundred Years War, then the Wars of Religion in the late 1500s, and was finally partly dismantled during the French revolution after it was sold to a private owner as bien national, as were most churches and monasteries.

What remains of the nave , choir and apse let us imagine how beautiful and simple that church was.

Angkor Thom, Bayon temple

At the end of October, the rainy season is not finished, Cambodia is still cloudy. Thus, visiting Angkor Wat, I could benefit from a beautifull light filtrered by clouds and humidity.

Every day, between 1 and 3h on the afternoon, heavy rain falled and I would rest on my tuk-tuk hammock. Then I would visit the Bayon Temple to stay in the shadow and then finish in Angkor Wat for sunset.

A rare type oh heritage architecture in the village of L’Isle-Bouzon: this dovecote from the 1400s is unique in the whole Gers, first because such utilitarian buildings from the Middle Ages were rarely kept, and more frequently pillaged for stones, and next because of its very unusual, perfectly round vaulting, which unfortunately became leaky, hence the modern-day tiled roof that was installed to protect the inside of the monument.

Over 900 years old, Skipton Castle is one of the most complete and best preserved medieval castles in England and is well worth a visit at any season of the year.

I first came here, on a school trip, when I was about 11 years old!
