The Jackson Pollock of Light Painting

Inside a Shinkansen carriage, at the National Railway Museum in York.

I used the radial blur filter (set to zoom instead of spin) in Photoshop to create this effect.

You can create this effect naturally by either zooming the lens as you take a long (ish) exposure... or possibly by moving as you shoot. The photoshop way was easier though!

Partly inspired by this from Lee Seung Kye:

Irritatingly, the carriage isn't symmetrical; there are three seats on one side of the aisle and two on the other!

Pirelli World Challenge at VIR

My second trip to VIR. Wanted to improve on some shots from last year and find new angles. Happy to say that I had only 1 fence in my way.

This was also the first time really focusing on using the 400mm for an event since retiring the 100-400. Really didn't miss it or the convenience of a zoom. I am pretty happy with how this 25 year old lens performs.

No, not actually sepia. It's just the pure-yellow streetlights which do that. Frost was covering the body of the car, so there are no light reflections from it.

Having spent a day running to both Uckfield and East Grinstead, Southern's Electro-Diesel 73 202 'Graham Stenning' heads northbound between Riddlesdown and Sanderstead on it's way back to Stewarts Lane Depot. I'm guessing this was a route learning trip for train crew.

I'm guessing that this locomotive, plus other members of class 73s operated by GBRf that haven't been rebuilt, are the only type of traction left on the railway network that have two red roller blinds as a form of tail light indication. That said, preserved 'Hastings Diesel' unit 1001 also uses two red blinds, but as far as I'm aware everything else has red marker lights or flashing tail lamps.

The Vision is surprisingly difficult to find in his original classic costume in Legends 1:12. I don't mean that you can't readily find him in an eBay search. Rather, over the years, Legends has provided us with multiple Visions in both the MCU and WandaVision designs, and even the white version from West Coast Avengers. But for the classic original comic version? Only the 2004 Toy Biz and, pictured here, the 2024 Hasbro.

The first classic Vision in 20 years.

The 2004 Toy Biz is fine but we were holding out for a modern Hasbro as the figure aesthetic is more pleasing. And, they finally released him!

This also puts us halfway to completing The Void BAF from this wave. We don't know much about the Void so building that character is not a strong pull, but since two of the remaining figures are Justice and Namorita from The New Warriors, both of which we like, if we eventually get them that will leave us only one shy of completing the build, which usually prompts us to buy. Even if the last figure is an absolutely horrid version of Namor.

Though we would have preferred Hasbro to use one of their slimmer bucks as the Vision was not usually drawn this bulky, this is still a very satisfying end to a rather long wait.

We also saw that there are independent offerings of yellow wired capes for him, so that's tempting as well. Vision was always drawn with super dramatic cape action, à la Batman, Doc Doom, etc.

...finally got around to processing this shot. It's my view soon after taking off from Austin, TX en route to Chicago.

It's funny...I was so used to shooting stopped- down to maximize depth-of-field that I didn't realize this approach doesn't work well when shooting through a dirty and scratched airplane window. You also have to be aware that shooting into the sun proves especially problematic since all those window imperfections light up like fireworks when the sunlight hits them. So wait for a moment when the sun moves behind a cloud or the plane's wingtip blocks the direct light then fire off a few shots.

I was reading Robin Wall Kimmerer's "Braiding Sweetgrass" when painting this one. I was struck by the second last paragraph in the book:

"The moral covenant of reciprocity calls us to honor our responsibilities for all we have been given, for all that we have taken. It’s our turn now, long overdue. Let us hold a giveaway for Mother Earth, spread our blankets out for her and pile them high with gifts of our own making. Imagine the books, the paintings, the poems, the clever machines, the compassionate acts, the transcendent ideas, the perfect tools. The fierce defense of all that has been given. Gifts of mind, hands, heart, voice, and vision all offered up on behalf of the earth. Whatever our gift, we are called to give it and to dance for the renewal of the world. In return for the privilege of breath."

So, "Dance For the Renewal of the World" seemed like an appropriate title for this painting.

Drunk Vision.

Io credo proprio di no.
