Bueno, ya casi termine de personalizar mi nueva maquina :)

The new currently non-configurable login screen! Yes, we'll all miss having a custom one for a little while but they're working on a tool to fix that. As far as looks go, I really like it! Not too harsh, easy to look at in all the right places, and stylish.

To work with TileMill via the VirtualBox TileMill VM, first download and install [VirtualBox 4.x for your given operating system - which can be Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, or Solaris. VirtualBox runs as a standalone application that allows another operating system (a "guest", in this case Ubuntu linux) to run within VirtualBox on your machine (the "host"). Your system should ideally have several GB of free RAM, but it should work with less, albeit the guest will run a bit slower.

After installing VirtualBox, download the Mapnik Virtual Appliance (the .ova file) and import it into VirtualBox (You can find the latest download link at the support page. Expect the import to take 5-10 minutes.

One step closer to theming nirvana.

From lost to the river

Ok, I must be crazy....I admit...

In this screenshot I am starting up UBUNTU and KUBUNTU in the same time on top of Windows XP. The processor had a hard time, but it managed surprisingly well!!

We just released VirtualBox TileMill VM, a virtual machine with Ubuntu Linux and the latest Mapnik and TileMill pre-installed that can be downloaded and booted up from any operating system using VirtualBox.

This makes installing TileMill easy and possible in any operating system.

Next what we will do is to change the text which is shown inside the snippet. If you remember back to when we created the SnippetView class (feel free to look back if not), you will see that we assigned the created Text element to this.controls.text. In the scope of the view like that, 'this' is the view class itself and in the previous step we made a reference to the class object with a variable named simply "view". So in the console now, if we access view.controls.text we will be directly accessing the Text element we had created previously. Text elements have a handy method on them called setText() which allows you to as you would imagine, change the text shown at a later time after creating it. In the example above, I typed the following into the console:

view.controls.text.setText("Hi mom!");

If you do the same, making sure to have the simulator window where you can see your snippet clearly as in the example above, you will see the snippet change from saying "Hello World" to "Hi mom!" instantly the second you hit enter. Pretty cool eh? We will cover more debugging / console usage in future posts in our tutorial series.

It is my desktop and it is running both Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 and Windows XP via Virtual Box at the same time.. It is neat, but XP is very limited! XP cannot play watch instantly or to work with coupon printer, yet.. Hope I can get both problems fixed soon... if it is even possible. If you know a way to fix this, please share it with me!

VirtualBox - Guest Additions - Windows XP: wizard dell'installazione.

via WordPress getlocalclout.com/big-data-and-servers/

Today’s data volumes are forcing every system administrators to rethink about their server configurations. With over 2.7 Zettabytes of data worldwide, and volumes doubling every 1.2 years (see big-data stats), dealing with this massive data deluge is creating new opportunities for business development.

Big Data not only describes the massive amounts of data stored on disk, but also refers to streaming data that originates from a wide set of sources, including web activity, mobile connected devices, and a myriad of business transactions. Unstructured, large, and emanating from multiple sources/formats, big-data is often characterized by the 5 Vs: Volume, Velocity, Variety, Veracity, and Value.

The tools for data infrastructures

To deal with the quality of data, computing infrastructure use an array of complex technologies, making server configuration particularly challenging, but also more interesting than traditional computing. Whether getting massive amounts of data from disk, or from live streams, the modern data infrastructure must be a distributed platform, selecting and moving data over parallel nodes to downstream processing, and ultimately interpretation. This movement towards distribution achieves the goal of dramatically increasing data throughput by spreading storage and computing over many nodes in a cluster.

To convert your server for dealing with large data, new platform tools for Warehousing include Apache Hadoopwith the HDFS filesystem and Apache Kafka (used with with Samza or Flink) for low-latency distributed streaming. Unstructured data can be accessed using modern NoSQL distributed databases, such as Cassandra or MongoDB, as well as many others. Also part of the modern data infrastructure are the downstream Data Analytics applications for statistical machine learning library; popular libraries include Apache Spark or H2O.ai. Several visualization platforms are available providing remarkable web-based data discovery, such as the D3 D3 javascript library.

Getting your hands dirty

With so many software tools, the complex interplay between, and the need for distributed cluster computing, building an effective production level infrastructure for data has become a daunting task even for the experienced administrator. Fortunately, you don’t have to build a cluster system to become familiar with the large data ecosystem. By using a Linux server and virtualization, you can configure a Hadoop cluster (see this tutorial) on a single machine. For step-by-step guides, see this Hadoop on VirtualBox blog and this how-to or this blog using Linux containers that offer a lower latency solution. To configure a server for analyzing Twitter data with Hadoop,

this how-to shows how cloud computing infrastructures can be configured. For using machine learning with Apache Spark, this step-by-step guide will show you how to install it on your server and this article will cover some basic programming examples.

Why not GPUs?

Apart from cluster-based computing, you can use the inherent parallelism of modern graphics processors (GPUs). This blog article describes the hardware/software configurations for a deep learning workstation server.

Conclusions

Whatever your needs, it is an exciting time to learn how to adapt your server to the new data world.

Okay, even by my geek standards, maybe I've gone too far. How may ways go I really need to get to Google?

Tech stuff (from left):

1. Macbook Air 11" with OS X Snow Leopard (running Chrome)

2. HP Core i7 desktop with Windows 7 (running Chrome)

3. Ubuntu Linux 10.10 running as a VM in Virtualbox on the PC (And yes, that's also Chrome)

All are running via the Apple external keyboard. There is a KVM switch under the monitors that share the keyboard, mouse and monitor between the Mac and PC.

I need a life...

3D cube turning using the desktop manager Beryl. On the left Desktop you can see KBUNTU running under UBUNTU in full screen mode, using VirtualBox.

The next thing we will do is to get a reference to the instantiated SnippetView class so we can poke around with it a bit. If you take a look at Javascript/init.js in your editor, you will see where we make a mapping of views and their IDs to the relevant view class. From that table, we can see that 'snippet-main' is mapped to our SnippetView class we created previously. Now go ahead and type the following into the console to get a reference to that view:

var view = $('snippet-main');

$() is a shortcut function which makes it easier to get a reference to something in the DOM.

Running Windows XP as a guest OS on a VirtualBox Virtual Machine on Mac OS X.

Now, to install the OS in a virtual machine, we'll need to download virtual machine software. We'll download the free program Virtual Box (Windows, Mac, Linux, Solaris) at 4mbg6l

Putting the 64-bit Windows 7 Release Candidate through it's paces. I've been running it on a Dell desktop for the past 3 weeks and on a couple of old Pentium 4 boxen. This is my first experience with it on a mainstream notebook (Core 2 Duo T8100). So far it runs quite well and feels spritely. Everything I've installed so far is working (still need to install a couple of drivers but they aren't critical ones) except OpenVPN. Let's see: Firefox 3.5beta4, Virtual PC 7, CDBurnerXP (Lightscribe works!), iTunes 64-bit, CutePDF Writer, Foxit PDF Reader, DivX 7, VirtualBox 2.2.2, SunJava, Adobe Flash plugins, DxO Optics Pro Standard 5.3.3, and, and...

Well, I will need to decide whether to give Aptana Studio another look see, GimPad (though reportedly it's buggy in Vista), NotePad++, and some others.

February 5, 2017. Did a Costco run and ran into a snow squall at exit 88 on the highway while filling up. The rest of the day I messed around with bagrant and VirtualBox some more.
