Belle Isle has seven miles of shoreline on the Northern Neck's Rappahannock River and provides access to Mulberry and Deep creeks. The park lets visitors explore a wide variety of tidal wetlands interspersed with farmland and upland forests.
The diverse habitats found in the park provide homes to many predator birds, such as blue herons, osprey, hawks and bald eagles. White-tailed deer, turkeys, groundhogs, rabbits, squirrels, moles, reptiles and amphibians are also common. There are eight distinct types of wetlands within the park.

I've had a cold for the last few days, and on Tuesday morning I was sitting up at 4am trying to talk myself into getting out and hiking up to Wilburn Ridge by sunrise... it didn't happen.
Fortunately, on Wednesday I was feeling a little better and was able to get up and at em and hike to Wilburn with plenty of time before sunrise(trying to get up there in a hurry will raise your heart rate nice and high!).
Unfortunately, the conditions were pretty much clear, so the sunrise itself wasn't anything spectacular, but still nice to watch.
Before I made my way down to the car(the forecast was high 80's so I was bound for the river) I hung out and watched a foal resting its eyes while leaning on mom.

On July 20th, 2013, James River State Park held their annual summer festival, complete with canoe and duck races, a Super Soaker challenge, a silent auction, bouncy houses for the children, a fishing clinic, a canoe race, etc. Families visited with SPCA dogs waiting for adoption, children made tie-dyed shirts, and lots of hot dogs and hamburgers were sold at the event.The festival was attended by people of all ages, from the baby eating up her first ice cream cone to senior citizens enjoying the beautiful weather.

Here is a view of the front entrance of Cabin #8 that we stayed in during my participation in the Railroad Festival in Appomattox. James River State Park opened in June 1999. Sixteen years of age and the sun beating down on this side of the Cabin has caused the wood siding on the Cabin to fade.

Today was a great day for biking the New River Trail, with the occasional photo. It was a 97% biking, 3% photography kinda day.
The bright sun and nearly cloudless day kept good photos at bay, but let the colors of the trees and rocks shine. I used a polarizer and a 10 stop filter here.
