70 Ontario St, Stratford, ON

We are proud to announce that our interactive LightWall installation on the west façade of 70 Ontario Street will remain in place throughout the year. It is comprised of a series of 25’ tall LED pixel banners that project out from the heritage building with a stunning display of colour and movement, but also incorporates the ability for people to speak into the flower talk-tube sculpture to impact the light display in real-time.

A viewer states, and audubon.org confirms, that the female or immature specimens of the rufous hummingbird and the Allen's hummingbird are indistinguishable in the field. The feeder is now in direct sunlight which provides additional detail. The bird was shot from a distance of three feet through a window. Do we have an expert out there who can distinguish between the two species? Based on geographic distribution of the two species, the rufous is more likely to appear in central Texas.

Was taking some shots of the squirrels checking out the 'new' Goodie Bowl I put out the other day, and was surprised to see there were several squirrels who showed up, appearing to be suffering from Warbles.

Every once in a while, we'll notice a squirrel or two with this condition, but it's been a while since I've seen one. And now we seem to have several. This scaredy cat fellow did his share of tail wagging and belly crawling when he spotted the "scary" Goodie Bowl, but eventually it got up the courage to hurry forward, grab a pecan and the rush off to enjoy it.

Part of the reason I feed the birds and critters is to give them a helping hand. Winters can be cold. Spring is when there is less food in nature because it hasn't grown yet. Summers can be really hot. And Fall is when our visitors need to start fattening up for winter. And on occasions like this, when one is sick, or injured, they need all the help they can get.

What Are Warbles?

Warbles are the larval stage of botflies, specifically the larvae of the botfly species that infest small mammals, including squirrels. The adult botflies lay their eggs on the fur of the host animal. When the eggs come into contact with the warmth of the squirrel's body, they hatch into larvae, which then burrow into the skin, forming a raised, swollen bump known as a warble.

In capturing this building from this particular angle, I sought to transcend mere architectural representation to reveal the graphic rhythm that animates our urban environment. My intention was to transform this facade into an almost abstract composition, where sharp white lines dialogue with the deep blues of the windows. I deliberately chose this diagonal perspective to create visual tension and give an impression of movement to this static structure. This tight framing eliminates any superfluous context, inviting the viewer to immerse themselves in this pure geometric play. I wanted the eye to get lost in this rhythmic repetition, in this alternation of solids and voids, to offer a visual experience that transcends simple architectural documentation and becomes a meditation on the formal beauty that surrounds us daily.

After allowing westbound Metra Rock Island District #127 to discharge passengers and clear the platforms at the station stop at New Lenox, Ill., Nickel Plate Road 2-8-4 accelerates eastbound for Metra's 47th Street Yard, where the Joliet Rocket trainset will slumber before one additional day of round-trips between Joliet and La Salle Street Station. As they did in 2017 when we visited this location, my sons Mikey (left) and Christopher are again having a Mighty Fine Time recording the nighttime passage of the NKP Berkshire.

Eagle-eyed Flickr viewers will also note the Waxing Crescent moon just ahead of the headlight and Mars light of the 765.

There are now around 200 Black Robins, but in 1980 only five survived on Little Mangere Island. They were saved from extinction by Don Merton and his Wildlife Service team, and by "Old Blue", the last remaining fertile female. The remaining birds were moved to Mangere Island. The team increased the annual output of Old Blue (and later other females) by removing the first clutch over every year and placing the eggs in the nest of the Chatham race of the tomtit, a technique known as cross-fostering. The Tomtits raised the first brood, and the Black Robins, having lost their eggs, relaid and raised another brood.

oil paint and graphite. The theme is the hermetical laws of polarity and movement. There is no ending and no beginning in any direction, just an endless movement. You have the possibility to arrange the papers like you want and that makes it an endless playground for my photo-work and the eyes of the viewers.

Many images in this set were taken inside Forest Lawn Memorial Park's (California, USA) Great Mausoleum.

The general public is not allowed to enjoy these and many other works of art in the Great Mausoleum. Entry is granted only to those able to afford the high price of admission and their living family members.

Why?

I turned the door handle of the Great Mausoleum at Forest Lawn in Glendale, California, USA and as the heavy door opened, I entered another world.

The massive, cathedral-like structure houses not only the remains of thousands able to afford the lofty ticket price for admission, it houses beautiful works of art. Sculptures, stained glass windows and ceilings, elegant marble throughout and massive architecture...all are off limits to the general public.

I didn't know at the time I turned that door knob, that Forest Lawn is consumed about keeping this structure and its contents strictly away from public view. I was simply a guy trying to take photos I like who quickly realized the challenges posed in this setting. I was simply on quest that began at the cemetery where my Mom and brother were buried almost twenty years ago.

One can attend a viewing of a stained glass window, The Last Supper, but, I've since returned (hoping to share with my family the splendor within) asking to enter the mausoleum. We were turned away. Forest Lawn's policy strictly prohibits entry to the general public.

Why? One would think that Forest Lawn (and its founder Mr. Eaton and its longtime and current President and CEO, John Llewellyn, would want to share with the wider world, the beauty contained within given the frequent ugliness which hits us in daily life...providing a form of comfort which is their business.

Forest Lawn loves attention but only on their terms. It thrives being known as the Disneyland of death services (and I mean that in the most respectful way ...after all, Walt Disney himself chose Forest Lawn) and hundreds of the famous and infamous call Forest Lawn home.

It is obvious Forest Lawn takes its mission seriously and provides a needed service exhibiting the highest levels of excellence from its impeccable grounds, to fine facilities and attentive staff.

Forest Lawn's theatrical stagings for adults and school children, its public art, museum and grounds filled with celebrities and movers and shakers, convey a seemingly mixed message when it comes to excluding the public from the massive amounts of great art held within the Great Mausoleum.

Why the exclusion? Staffing its maze of halls isn't a concern; staff members are everywhere throughout the park. Security? Sure it's in a bad neighborhood. But, as I wandered unknowingly in this remarkable place from which I was supposed to be excluded, I never saw graffiti...even in the restroom.

In fact, I never saw another soul (sorry, no pun intended). And, that, to me, is sad.

As I wandered, I was challenged by low light, by my impulse to rush my hand held shots since I had a vague gut feeling I was alone, but not; that someone was about to find me taking photos in a place where I was the forbidden invader...the only one...alive...appreciating fine art. Certainly, those entombed can not enjoy it.

Mr. Llewellyn, please open the doors to the Great Mausoleum for the public and the profound and positive impact its will have on us.

Mr. Llewellyn, I extend this offer:

if you have looked at my photos and they have spoken to you, please contact me. I will offer my photographic services to Forest Lawn to use in ways upon which we can agree.

The possibilities are limitless:

I can photographically catalog all of Forest Lawn's art at all its properties; the images could be published in many forms...books, dvd sets, and more; guided tours; respectful events built around the art and the images; museum exhibits.

Again, the possibilities are limitless and all can be accomplished in good taste equal to your mission statement and still be respectful of your residents and their families and, serve to educate and benefit the larger public.

A BIT OF BACKGROUND:

Many years ago after burying my mother and brother within days of the other, I was wandering their cemetery pondering and was intrigued by the statues I saw.

I was taken by the artist's talent in being able to capture the female form (since that was all the cemetery had). The sculptor's manipulation of the viewer's perceptions...cloth and how it draped, creating muscle tone, emotions displayed in facial expressions, all created from stone, piqued my interest.

I began an informal quest to research and find as many sculptures and to photograph them which overwhelmingly depicted the female nude (or partially so) in the cemetery/memorial setting.

As my cemetery visits grew, I began to realize that many of the sculptures seemingly evoked a sensuality in this form of memorial art.

Here, then, is my photos...a project in evolution...the female form as portrayed in an often sensual manner in memorial art.

I like to use textures when I'm working in an still life photography. The idea is that viewer travel to the past with this kind of pictures.

There are a few things going on this image which may not be immediately apparent to the viewer, but having been so intimately involved in the process of creating this photograph, I have some insight on to share. If you are a regular follower of my feed, you'll likely know I do a lot of long exposure work. As in, super long. Typically I work with at least a 9 stop ND filter but often combine it with a second or go to a standalone 15 stop ND. Over the years, and thousands of photos, I have learned that film responds in some unusual ways when such strong ND filters get combined. Color film is not terribly IR sensitive, so the fact that my filters don't have IR-blocking coatings on them seems less like the issue. My working theory is that these filters pass more UV light than visible light and color film does have sensitivity that dips into the UV end of the spectrum. So in a sense I am getting some degree of UV over-exposure. The non-technical way of describing this is that my super long exposure color photography can get some funky colors to it. At first I worked to correct this back to "normal", with "normal" of course merely being the subjective benchmark I applied based on how my eyes and brain saw the world. Over time though I became less interested in normal. Part of that is because I don't need the photos to show me normal. I can see that with my own eyes. Rather, I enjoy seeing the alternative perspectives. What does the world look like if one can see a bit farther into UV, for example. The second thing going on is I am using a new color film put out by Silberra. I have not shot much of this film, so its behaviors and qualities is still unexplored ground for me. And I do like my unexplored ground. And lastly, I am always a bit fascinated at our own brain's ability to adapt to changing color temperatures and filter them back to what we call normal. This image was made late into sunset, and while the clouds were getting painted with some nice light, the beach itself had descended into a deep blue dusk. I couldn't see this blue of course because of the aforementioned workings of my brain. In fact, the beach looked more like it does in this photo, with a neutral sandy color, but reference photos made on my phone with the white balance set to daylight showed me the blue.

That is the backdrop for this photo. Once scanned I started doing some light processing to it, mostly cleaning up dust marks or the occasional film scratch. I balanced the exposure across the scene a bit but largely didn't touch the color too much other than some global corrections. And this image is the result. The colors that came out are a bit surreal. It is a subtle surrealism for sure, no crazy juxtapositions going on here, but one I enjoy.

This is what the artists says about his work 'Exposure' (2010) "My concept of how sculpture works in the landscape is that it is a still point in a moving world. The whole idea of EXPOSURE is that this work, made at a particular time, rooted to ground, reacts over time to the changing environment. One of the known environmental changes that is happening is the rising of the sea level through global warming. It is critical to me that at the time of its making this work reacts with the viewer, the walking viewer, on the top of the polder and that the surface that the viewer stands on is the surface that the work stands on. The work cannot have a plinth. Over time, should the rising of the sea level mean that there has to be a rising of the dike, this means that there should be a progressive burying of the work."
