Hughes OH-6 Cayuse FAC 4241 on display at the Aerospace Museum of the Colombian Aerospace Force in Tocancipá, Colombia. It is a light observation helicopter with capacity for two crew members and three passengers. The Hughes Company began its helicopter manufacturing program in 1961. Its first products were models 200 and 300. The prototype, designated 269, made its first test flight in October 1956 with a 170 hp Lycoming piston engine.

The operation of these highly versatile, fast, and easy-to-maintain and operate aircraft quickly spread to other countries, including Algeria, Australia, Brazil, Colombia, Ghana, England, Mexico, and Sweden.

In 1968, the Colombian Air Force acquired 25 Cayuses; initially, 15 arrived, followed by 10 more in 1977. Their FAC registrations ranged from 241 to 265, and later from 4241 to 4265. From the outset, they were assigned to the Tactical Support Air Command No. 1 in Melgar, Tolima, and were tasked with supporting the army in operations against subversion and drug trafficking, as well as search, rescue, and salvage missions for victims of aviation accidents or natural disasters.

The Cayuse OH-6A was one of the aircraft with the lowest accident rates at the FAC.

Known as the "Fun Car" and the "Bucket Seat Car" It was a very versatile car as the grand equivalent of the Willys Jeep. Work is coming good but it will be redone soon.

Bley on the sides will also be replaced. ;)

C&C please! ;]

I've avoided taking my 50mm out on morning shoots - no real reason why other than logic says take the 24-70 as its more versatile....But.....I didn't miss not having my 24-70 at all. And the sharpness and effects you can get with a standard 50mm F1/4 make it a worthwhile sacrifice.

A chore sent me into a closet with a lot of ignored content. These have 2006 expiration dates...

The Consolidated PBY Catalina, was a versatile flying boat used by various nations during and after World War II. It was known for its long-range capabilities, ability to land on water, and served in roles such as reconnaissance, anti-submarine warfare, and search and rescue. The Catalina played a crucial role in maritime operations during the war and has a significant place in aviation history.

We did this shoot at a local business campus on a March day that felt like July - absolutely perfect shooting conditions, with three of my favorite models and some excellent photographers - life doesn't get better than this!!

I love shooting with Valerie but she is so busy and our schedules never match. She told me her goal is to get more shoots in and my cameras like the thought of that. We go way back and she is like family to us. It's been fun watching her mature and succeed over the years, but I really hope to get more shoots with her in soon!

In his book on the plants of Louisiana (1817), that remarkable and versatile naturalist, linguist, anthropologist and archaeologist, Turkish-born Frenchman Constantine Samuel Raffinesque (1783-1840) castigated Claude César Robin (1750-1794). Robin had been a chaplain to the French forces commanded by Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Rochambeau, comte de Vimeur, who fought on the American side during the Revolutionary War. He was also interested in botany, but very much an amateur, prone to mistakes. Thus Raffinesque points out how he misidentified our plant.

Sarracenia leucophylla hails from Louisiana, and that's where Raffinesque encountered it. Sarracenia is named for Michel Sarrazan (1659-1734), a French physician and naturalist who worked in Quebec. He sent back to the King's Botanical Garden in Paris the first North American Sarracenia (purpurea) known to Europe and he remarked how this Pitcher plant is carnivorous. Contemporary botanists would have nothing of this confusion between plants and animals. It wasn't until Charles Darwin wrote about carnivorous plants in 1875, that Sarrazan was put in the right.

Interestingly, too, Raffinesque already put forward a precursor to Darwin's theory on evolution around 1833. Darwin acknowledged this in later editions of The Origin of Species (1859). But Raffinesque missed out on the central mechanism of Darwinian evolution, natural selection, first developed by Wallace and Darwin.

Raffinesque had also observed that Pitcher Plants serve as animal traps, but how that process more specifically works had to wait for Darwin's study.

On Sunday evening I set out to take some late afternoon/sunset shots. As I was driving back from the spot where I had just shot 300+ HDR source images, I spotted this shiny dumptruck by the side of the road. Shooting this allowed me to put the versatility of my tripod to good use -- I had to adjust one leg out so that I could get a lower angle for the shot. So yes, like a fool I was on the asphalt in a very contorted position trying to get a shot. I have to say that I'm very careful when I shoot while crouching/lying down on the asphalt. I'm hoping being careful (and perhaps lucky) allows me to get good shots without getting run over. This is a blend of seven source images. Here's the process:

My recipe for this shot:

1. I started with 7 source images, which I processed in Photomatix Pro and exported to a 16-bit TIFF file.

2. I imported the TIFF into Lightroom and basically just did spot removal and lightly reduced the noise before exporting it to JPEG.

3. Next I opened the JPEG in Photoshop and used the Unsharp Mask filter, which brought out some of the detail in the grill of the truck really nicely. After that, I added my border and logo and voila' it was ready for upload!

4. I sat on the file for about 18 hours and looked at it a few times before deciding to post it. I've been doing this more and more with images that have heavy HDR characteristics.

I realized early on that once I've been working on an image for some time, I am too invested to be objective about whether it's good, bad, too HDR-heavy or not enough. Revisiting images with a fresh eye is my reality check. It's been working pretty well too.

In case you're interested, this photo was also uploaded to 500px, where it has been much more successful than I expected (images I upload over there seem to be hit or miss). This was definitely a hit, which was a nice but unexpected surprise.
