For CC June Versatile challenge

Ynes Enriquetta Julietta Mexia (1870-1938) was a versatile and highly energetic botanist. She'd started out her career as a poultry farmer, then became a social worker on the West Coast of the USA where she found her avocation as a lover of plants. Though she failed taking a degree, she was soon avidly collecting plants and exploring in Central and South America. Notably she was also an anthropologist of sorts, living for a number of months with the Peruvian Aguarunas of the Amazon. But always collecting and sending home to the USA her finds many of which ended up in the U.S. National Herbarium.

On April 20, 1935 Mexia found this amazing Ceratostema silvicola - more or less translating to Woodsy Horned-Stamen - a member of the Heather family in Napo-Pastaza, Ecuador. It was first fully described by Albert Charles Smith (1906-1999) in 1950. The genus had already been given its name by Antoine-Laurent de Jussieu (1748-1830) in 1789. It has been said that our plant is of 'little economic importance'; regardless, today in Amsterdam's glum weather it is a happy reminder of Brightness.

On Sunday evening I set out to take some late afternoon/sunset shots. As I was driving back from the spot where I had just shot 300+ HDR source images, I spotted this shiny dumptruck by the side of the road. Shooting this allowed me to put the versatility of my tripod to good use -- I had to adjust one leg out so that I could get a lower angle for the shot. So yes, like a fool I was on the asphalt in a very contorted position trying to get a shot. I have to say that I'm very careful when I shoot while crouching/lying down on the asphalt. I'm hoping being careful (and perhaps lucky) allows me to get good shots without getting run over. This is a blend of seven source images. Here's the process:

My recipe for this shot:

1. I started with 7 source images, which I processed in Photomatix Pro and exported to a 16-bit TIFF file.

2. I imported the TIFF into Lightroom and basically just did spot removal and lightly reduced the noise before exporting it to JPEG.

3. Next I opened the JPEG in Photoshop and used the Unsharp Mask filter, which brought out some of the detail in the grill of the truck really nicely. After that, I added my border and logo and voila' it was ready for upload!

4. I sat on the file for about 18 hours and looked at it a few times before deciding to post it. I've been doing this more and more with images that have heavy HDR characteristics.

I realized early on that once I've been working on an image for some time, I am too invested to be objective about whether it's good, bad, too HDR-heavy or not enough. Revisiting images with a fresh eye is my reality check. It's been working pretty well too.

In case you're interested, this photo was also uploaded to 500px, where it has been much more successful than I expected (images I upload over there seem to be hit or miss). This was definitely a hit, which was a nice but unexpected surprise.

I am making some stocking fillers for my great nieces and nephews. (I like to start Christmas early!)

These are only 6 inches tall (15cm in modern money) and are made up of so many small parts that they are fiddly. The fairy took a whole week to make!

Zooming into the Hibiscus bud this afternoon, I think I've created a masterpiece!

I need this! For the last two hours I have been trying to help OH who is 150 miles away and locked out of his office. He was ready to leave, went to the reception area for something and was locked out of the inner office. (The only one there). All he had was his iwatch, so he could call me, but everything else, two phones, jacket, computer, keys etc were locked in the inner office. I had to deal with emails and texts to work colleagues, to see if anyone could go and get him out!

Just after 6 the cleaners arrived and rescued him! I need a gin and tonic to calm my nerves! LOL

The most versatile craft in the Colonial Defense Navy, the F-80 was designed from the beginning to be modular and customizable to adapt to a wide-array of combat scenarios. New modular systems are still in development as this carrier-bourne starfighter campaigns across the galaxy in the fight for peace and justice. The Sabrehawk may be new, but it is quickly finding itself host to many new fighter aces.

CC Most Versatile - Eat Your Veggies

Some of the vegetables in this dish came in a package of precut, mixed veggies. I don't plan on doing that again as the cutting makes them go bad quicker. And the asparagus was quite woody. They must have used the parts of the plant that I would normally cut off when prepping. Also, the precut round carrots are just plain boring and make me think of cafeteria food. The food was still delicious, with added flavors of wine, ginger, lemon grass paste, and low sodium soy sauce.

A slice of Victoria sponge anyone.

(Actually made in the Cosori Air Fryer as an experiment - it was delicious.)

The 'Most Versatile' challenge is set by the Compositionally Challenged Group. Thanks very much Sharon for setting these super themes.

In this month's challenge, 12 members entered 112 photos, and 9 members completed all 10 themes. These members, in play order were: Ms J, Robin, Maria, Sandi, Pat, Sharon, Dave, Andy and Carissa.
