Affût dans la région de Maurs (Cantal - 15 / France)

This Oystercatcher was on a mission to who-knows-where; he was flying very low (Notice how close to the sand the bird's wingtips are), and he was flying fast - very fast...!

Small seed-eating bird of humid tropical lowlands, fairly common. Found in grassy and weedy areas and forest hedges.

A two-photo set of the same Variable Checkerspot butterfly. This was seen along the trail adjacent to the Stevens Creek Reservoir.

My wife is always asking me how I come up with my hair-brained schemes. It's like this: tear the pages out of all these books and bind them in a random order. Read the book. That's my brain.

Happy Sliders Sunday everyone.

2019 Weekly Alphabet Challenge, Week 48, V for Variable

Back in The Netherlands we were briefly in Delft. I think this image does show at least two variables (distance and time) if not more :-)

I always enjoy seeing the Variable Checkerspot, a beautiful butterfly that was re-introduced to the Presidio in San Francisco in 2017 after becoming locally extinct in the 1970s. You will only see them fly around for about 3 months every spring. They are called Variable because their color and pattern has a lot of variability. This butterfly was seen last week at El Polin Springs in the Presidio.

Having captured an acceptable portrait of the Variable Oystercatcher, I headed back to the nearby high tide and continued to wonder along Waikanae Beach, but:

I'd only gone 50 metres when I had the distinct feeling I was being followed, and sure enough - when I turned around - there was the bird I'd just photographed... just two (human) paces behind me! And when I stopped, he pretended to be checking out a possible food supple underneath a length of grass...

"Hey...!" said I. "I'm not a risk to you. You can go back to your mate...!" And with that, the bird turned and ambled back to the log it had been perched on - clearly satisfied it had driven off yet another Human...!
