female

approx. 20mm

These are tiny compared to their normal size cousins which usual size around 40mm. Hardly noticed them when at perched until they move. They are generally well-behaved and stay still for the shoot.

Mostly black, the epaulet consisting of the upper wing-coverts. Some subspecies have a yellow epaulet and yellow thighs (e.g., I. c. tibialis) while other sub-species have an ochre-orange epaulet.

The diet includes insects and nectar. Its nest is a long hanging basket of grass and other plant fibres, suspended from the end of a branch. 2 dark-spotted pale blue or white eggs are laid.

Male Violet Dancer (a.k.a. Variable Dancer; Argia fumipennis violacea) - Loantaka Brook Reservation, Morris County Park Commission, Morristown, New Jersey

My fav colors for damsels are orange and red, but I'll settle for purple every time!

I also saw these guys at Best Lake but had no luck in sneaking up on them.

They were much more numerous along the Loantaka brook so finding cooperative subjects was a bit easier.

Here, I used a Canon 180 mm Macro with a 2xTC to give me the 360 mm focal length needed to capture these guys from a respectful distance. The extra focal length added by the TC also helps to blur the BG a bit more though some of that is lost to the smaller aperture needed to extend the DOF for a more in-focus bug.

Aphelodoris varia.

As the name suggests this hawk has more than one combination of plumage colours. This one is typical for the high Andes area of Puno and this seemed to be their tree of choice for hunting the local Guinea pigs.
