MTF charts and all are cool, but what really matters is the results that a lens produces on your camera. With a telephoto lens, it's crucial to extract every bit of detail in the scene for cropping/enlargement in post.
How much detail does the 55-300mm VR reveal at full reach on a D90? Zoom all the way in and see for yourself! This is a hand-held 1/30s shot at 300mm. The plane is about 12" long (excluding the tail portion not visible in the frame) and was shot from approx. 15 ft distance.
The lens resolves more detail than the D90 can encode satisfactorily with its 12MP sensor. It could reveal even more detail had it been mounted on a 16MP D7000!

The Glastonbury festival is renowned, year on year, for being served by a large number of Bristol VRs: in this view three of Davis Hoare's Chepstow Classic Buses examples surround the remaining ABus one, painted to celebrate 100 years of Bristol bus and lorry building. The scene is the special festival bus staion - here a dust bowl, but on many other years a mud bath!

During an excellent Independant Bus tour which featured 5 VR's heres Johnson Bros PKE810M under the arches of the Clumber Country park on April 12th 2014
Chepstow Classic Buses open top Bristol VR/ECW, VDV143S, seen at the 2009 SVBM open weekend and rally at Lathalmond. The bus was originally new to Western National in 1978.

8860 VR at the Museum of Transport, Greater Manchester.
Registered in January 1964 and originally served with A. Mayne and Sons, an independent bus operator in Manchester.
The body was built by Neepsend of Sheffield to the same design as what the sister company, East Lancs, produced.
Originally a closed top VR, this bus had been converted to open top status and is seen used as such in conjunction with Guide Friday on the Bristol tour. A Badgerline Metrobus is trying to squeeze inside it.

After the run in 913, we had a little spin in 1215, and I get hold of the destination handles, well James, sorry you should not leave two big kids( Me & Dad) with you bus.
With the light all but gone I think this shot didn't come out to bad, in the coach Station, don't know what the locals in Nut Bush Lane thought of a VR going by at just after 9pm though!!
